The Four Riders are the four highest-ranking soldiers in the Daein army. The first incarnation of the four riders was known as the Great Riders, and consisted of Gawain, Tauroneo, Bryce, and Lanvega. After Ashnard ascended to the Daein throne, Gawain, Tauroneo, and Lanvega resigned from their positions. Tauroneo and Lanvega resigned in direct response to Ashnard's ascension, but remained members of Daein's military, while Gawain left Daein for Crimea after his wife Elena was entrusted with protecting Lehran's Medallion by Lillia.

The absent positions were later filled by the Black Knight, Petrine, and Bertram, who together with Bryce made up the second incarnation of the riders. The second incarnation would go on to play a major role in the Mad King's War. Of the four members, Petrine and Bryce were killed by the Crimean Army led by Ike, the son of former member Gawain. The Crimean army would also go on to defeat Bertram in battle, but his life would be spared. The Black Knight was also personally defeated by Ike, but would escape the collapsing castle where their duel took place.
