From Pain, Awakening

Individual lives taken before your eyes weigh more heavily than the many lives taken during the chaos of war. If that life is someone dear, the burden is even worse. It's only human. Isn't that true? Micaiah. It's your caring soul that I admire. That's why I want it to be you. I want you to kill me.
— Pelleas

Blood Contract (Japanese: 血の代償 Blood Compensation) is the thirteenth chapter of Part III of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. In this chapter, Micaiah and Pelleas attempt to free themselves of the blood pact binding Daein to Begnion, but to little avail. Afterwards, Daein makes its last stand against Ike and the Laguz Alliance.

Plot

Main articles: Blood Contract/Script and Blood Contract/Conversations

In Castle Nox, Sothe delivers news to Tauroneo that Begnion has been in an uproar recently, as Zelgius freed Sephiran from imprisonment, with the latter urging the people to side with the apostle instead of the senate. Though Tauroneo gets the idea to forge an alliance with the apostle's supporters, Pelleas warns against this, saying it will incite the blood pact's curse; he also states that defeating the senate will not keep it from coming either. Having found a way to truly break it, he requests Micaiah be brought to him, and Sothe quickly obliges. In private, he reveals to Micaiah, Sothe, and Tauroneo the solution: to end the blood pact, the pact-maker—Pelleas—must be killed by a third party. The three quickly object, with Micaiah unwilling to go through with it after having seen Sothe nearly killed earlier. Pelleas ponders on Micaiah's caring nature, and tells her that said nature is exactly why he wants her specifically to kill him. He encourages her to kill him for the good of Daein, or to let someone else kill him in her stead; a choice is then presented to the player.

Obey his command

Mustering up resolve, Micaiah decides to end his life herself. Pelleas thanks her, then asks Tauroneo to look after Daein on his behalf, and then apologizes to Sothe for the stress he put him and Micaiah through. Lastly, he asks Micaiah to give his mother a ring to remember him by. With all said and done, Micaiah kills Pelleas, and mourns his loss. Later, with Pelleas's corpse being laid down, Almedha rushes in to see him, and responds in horror at the sight. She becomes enraged, and Sothe clarifies that Pelleas's death was his own wish. She then shows them, however, that the mark of the blood pact remains on Pelleas's arm, meaning his death was in vain.

Pass the burden to another

Micaiah still refuses, and Pelleas reassures her that it is okay. He then asks Tauroneo to commit the deed, then apologizes to Sothe for the stress he put him and Micaiah through. Lastly, he asks Micaiah to give his mother a ring to remember him by. With all said and done, Tauroneo kills Pelleas, and Micaiah mourns his loss.

Refuse his command

Micaiah still refuses, and Pelleas reassures her that it is okay. He then asks Tauroneo to commit the deed, then apologizes to Sothe for the stress he put him and Micaiah through. Lastly, he asks Micaiah to give his mother a ring to remember him by. Before Tauroneo can kill Pelleas, however, Micaiah objects again, and steps in front of him as Tauroneo strikes. Worried, Pelleas calls for a healer, though Micaiah explains that she is somehow mostly unharmed. She then questions the truth of the materials he researched, unwilling to let him die in vain, and then falls unconscious. Pelleas thanks her for her choice.

After any of the three choices, Tibarn receives word from Janaff and Ulki that the Daein Army is hiding in Nox Castle. Ranulf, Skrimir, Sanaki, and Ike are then seen speaking together. Ranulf is befuddled by the Daein Army's current size: a mere ten thousand men. Sanaki suggests speaking with them, given they likely know of the rebellion in Begnion. Before Ike heads out, Rafiel and Nailah request to be taken along so that they can speak with Micaiah, while Reyson and Leanne tend to the medallion. Ike agrees, and moments later, his army begins storming the castle. Prepared for the fight of their lives, Micaiah and the Daein Army defend the castle with all they have. Though they fight valiantly, Ranulf arrives and brings forth the main force, signaling the end of the battle for Daein. With their defenses broken, Micaiah and her army are forced to retreat into the castle.

As they await their potential demise, Sothe ponders that Almedha seemed to know a good deal about the blood pact. Micaiah decides to find her, but the apostle's army has already breached the castle already. Outside, Ranulf warns Ike that the chaotic energy of the battle is causing the other laguz to begin losing control of themselves. Janaff, Ulki, and Tibarn then see something enormous coming on the horizon: a mighty black dragon, who topples a castle tower with its breath. Alongside the dragon, Ena and Elincia arrive, demanding a ceasefire. With no way to deal with a black dragon, Ike and his army retreat. Kurthnaga then runs up to Micaiah, wishing to keep her and his sister safe. Micaiah orders all other Daein soldiers to stop fighting when Nailah comes up to them with Rafiel.

Back in the apostle's army's camp, Ike learns that the black dragon they saw was in fact Prince Kurthnaga. Ena clarifies that Kurthnaga intends to stop the destruction of Daein and end the war. Baffled by this, Sanaki mentions that Daein up until this point has refused all ceasefires, and that she cannot waste any more time on the matter. Everyone gathered takes notice of the medallion's flames, which are burning ever stronger. Such flames gave the medallion another name: the Fire Emblem. Ena warns again that the war must end soon so that the dark god sealed within it may not be awakened. Ike and Elincia then meet in private, where she informs him that she and Lucia came searching for Bastian, and ran into Kurthnaga along the way. Bastian had been sent as an envoy to investigate the reappearance of the Black Knight, but with little success, and had been missing ever since. Ike then suggests that Elincia and Lucia travel with his army for safety.

Beginning log

Daein launches a surprise attack against the apostle's army, devastating her forces. It is all Apostle Sanaki can do to allay her remaining troops' burning desire for revenge. She knows that there is no hope of victory if her weakened forces are divided. However, she cannot move forward while danger follows at her back. This dilemma weighs heavily on the apostle's troops, crushing their morale. Meanwhile, the Daein forces pull back to the fastness of Nox Castle. Micaiah, unable to explain her mission to her soldiers, keeps Daein's army together through sheer force of will.

Strategy

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This chapter marks the third time that the player fights against characters who were previously playable in earlier chapters, in this case, the Greil Mercenaries and Ranulf. Depending on how well they trained while playable throughout most of Part 3, they may or may not be difficult to take down. Do not worry if their HP is dropped to zero in this chapter, they will simply retreat in lieu of dying permanently. However, said group of units are very solid fighters in their own right, and can be lethally dangerous if trained well, which is very likely to be the case given their good base stats and availability.

Be wary that during this chapter, Micaiah is unable to move past the green line at all, limiting her contributions to mainly Purge and Physic use. If you haven't already bought the one from the bargains, make sure to do so before starting the battle.

This chapter can be considered one of the more difficult chapters in the game barring the final few chapters of Part 4. This due to this chapter being a defensive-oriented one in which the player must survive for a set number of turns (as opposed to defeating a certain number of enemies in the previous two Dawn Brigade chapters), compounded with the issue of the mostly underleveled members of Micaiah's party fighting against high-leveled enemy laguz, who for the most part are not impeded by terrain unlike in Part 3, Chapter 6. There are also a few Hawk laguz, who can easily make a beeline towards the green line, resulting in a Game Over.

If the player wants to end the chapter quickly before Ranulf and the rest of the Greil Mercenaries show up, they can alternatively defeat Ike, provided that the area in front of him is clear of enemy laguz. However, doing so is easier said than done; as Ike is one of the best playable units in the game with excellent base stats and growths, he will most likely have already hit level 20 with some capped stats, which results in him being able to easily double attack and kill the player's units; furthermore, he has Ragnell, which would give him +5 defense while equipped with the legendary sword. Even his friend Soren is no pushover in battle, him too also being a very solid magic-using Sage; if he's already promoted into an Arch Sage, he can easily double and kill most of your units. If Ike and Soren were supporting each other beforehand, they will both have inflated avoid, making them hard to defeat in battle. The key to defeating Ike and end the chapter is to use the Sleep staff given in this chapter via a base conversation to prevent him from dodging and retaliating. As Ike has one of the worst bases and growths in resistance out of playable characters in the game, this makes him easily susceptible to status staves. The catch is that only Laura can get close enough to Ike's starting position to use the staff on him and is the only one who can use magic to bypass Ike's high defense, as Micaiah is confined to the area enclosed by the green line. Furthermore, if you intend to defeat Ike, you must ensure that you can finish him off before he has a chance to recover, since he will start moving if provoked or the turn count reaches 11.

Trivia

  • This is the only chapter in Radiant Dawn to feature units of all four possible affiliations (player, partner, other, enemy).
