— Haar, to Zeffren

Zeffren (Japanese: ゼフレン Zeffren) is a captain of the imperial dracoknights of Begnion. In the years after the Mad King's War, his squad attempted to abduct Princess Leanne of Serenes while she was flying above Crimea, forcing Queen Elincia and Marcia to intervene and drive Zeffren's squad away.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Zeffren is the boss of the Part II, Prologue and acts as the commander of the Imperial Knights units in this chapter. Since the chapter's objective is to defend Leanne for several turns, Zeffren's defeat is optional and he can be avoided. Defeating Zeffren does not end the chapter.

Personality

Described by his former comrade, Haar, as "greedy," "corrupt," and "stupid," Zeffren planned to sell Leanne to a wealthy lord to make some extra money on the side of his work as a dracoknight. He has no respect for Crimea, seeing their queen and army as weak for needing the aid of Begnion to free themselves.[1] He also has no respect at all for Haar or Shiharam because of their defection from Begnion.[2]

Quotes

Battle quotes

Now, begone with you! The skies and the heron are ours! I can't wait to see your corpse smashed across Crimea's landscape!
— Zeffren, as the boss of Part II, Prologue of Radiant Dawn.
Zeffren: You... You Crimeans seriously believe you can withstand the might of Begnion?!
Elincia: Crimea takes this sort of encroachment seriously. We will not overlook invaders in our domain. Release your weapons, and apologize for your discourtesy... Only then will we lower our own.
Zeffren: You have quite a mouth on you... I won't be addressed in that tone by anyone. It’s time to end this farce.

— Zeffren, when fighting Elincia in Part II, Prologue of Radiant Dawn.
Haar: Well... If it isn't Zeffren. What brings the dracoknights into Crimean skies?
Zeffren: Haar?!
Haar: Why couldn't you just stay on patrol? Saw a pretty little heron and just had to have her, is that it? I could never decide if you were more greedy or more corrupt. Stupid was never in the question, though.
Zeffren: Who do you think you are?! You're a traitor, just like Shiharam! The dracoknights spit on your name!
Haar: ...Do they now? Well, here’s your chance to try the real thing.

— Zeffren, when fighting Haar in Part II, Prologue of Radiant Dawn.

Elincia: Marcia, stop. We cannot afford to start antagonizing the Begnion army. I am the queen of Crimea...
Marcia: But, Your Majesty! We can’t just let these wyvern monkeys run rampant–
Elincia: And we’re not going to. As long as they don’t realize I’m the queen, we should be fine. Begnion dracoknights... You will only be warned once. Leave this area immediately! I serve the queen of Crimea. Trespassers on Crimean territory will be dealt with. No exceptions.
Zeffren: The queen, she says! The very queen that relied on us, the Begnion Empire, to free her nation. Imperial dracoknights are not frightened by soldiers so weak as Crimean pegasus knights. Listen up! Leave those two alone. It’s the Serenes maiden we want. Do not allow her to escape!
