Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Reyson is a heron laguz who acts as the dancer unit of the game, and can allow other units to move again. This is extremely valuable as it allows another unit to attack again, move farther, use a staff again, rescue/take/drop again, and so on. Furthermore, his Blessing skill lets him heal all adjacent units at the start of each turn. He starts every battle untransformed and takes 5 turns to transform. Untransformed he has a low 5 move and can refresh one unit. When transformed, he becomes a flying unit with 8 move and can refresh four adjacent units. He also gains a stat boost when transformed, though it is only helpful for more avoid and boosted Blessing healing; this will also deplete his laguz gauge. He is also one of the best users of the few laguz stones in the game (note that he cannot equip the Demi Band).

Reyson has a respectable speed and luck base, so his base avoid is above average and he does not get doubled by many units. His strength and skill are poor but do not matter as he cannot attack. His resistance base makes him an decent magic tank if necessary (especially from siege tomes) and an unlikely target for status staves, but he is physically frail and frequently dies in 2 hits, so he must be kept safe. He has 10 magic at base which is enough to contribute to healing via Blessing. All of his growths complement this, amplifying his avoid, magic, and resistance, but having poor physical stats.

As nobody else can replicate Reyson's utility, it is important to make as much use of his abilities as possible. When untransformed, he has poor movement, so it is easy for him to fall behind. This can be compensated through rescue-dropping but it is important to ensure he is not being carried by anyone by the end of a turn or else he cannot act the next turn. Most unmounted units can shove Reyson too due to his low weight, which helps. When transformed, he can keep up with mobile units; it is valuable to position your units such that as many units can get refreshed as possible. Mounted units make this easier as they have canto and can reposition themselves to take advantage of this.

Reyson has a fire affinity which gives an attack and accuracy boost. As he has no offensive capabilities at all, these boosts are useless for him, but can benefit a partner. Tormod gains the benefits of double fire, gaining +3 attack and +15 accuracy with an A support. He is a magic unit with staff utility and celerity, so he is very flexible as an offensive and support unit. Ike and Tanith both have earth supports which gives pure avoid, helping Reyson's avoid; they also benefit from the extra attack boost. Ike is the Lord and is frequently needed up front to seize, so he can be a decent partner. Tanith is extremely mobile and has canto as well.

The boost is a +5 for max HP, and +2 for strength, magic, skill, speed, luck, defense or resistance. See Data transfer § Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for more information.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Reyson is one of three laguz herons available, and has the ability to let other units move again. He is the most flexible heron, having flight, canto, and the highest movement. Untransformed, he can only refresh one unit at a time, compared to Leanne and Rafiel who can refresh two and four respectively. However, when transformed, Reyson can refresh four adjacent units, making him a powerful support unit after a few turns. As he has 8 transformed move and canto, this also gives him massive flexibility, being able to move into a dangerous area, refresh several units, then canto into safety. Reyson has the highest base level of the three herons and is the only one who already knows Bliss. This can be situationally useful for units with predictable biorhythm curves. Most notably, manipulating any thief to Best biorhythm guarantees a 100% chance of finding a hidden item with them. Comparing Reyson with other herons is only applicable for endgame, where the player can choose a heron to bring; Reyson is most valuable for slower-paced players, but if the player wants to be able to refresh multiple units on the first few turns, Reyson should not be picked. However, by endgame, at least one Laguz Gem will be available to the player, with one of them being carried by Giffca, who joins prior to endgame. So if the player does not intend to bring Giffca into the Tower, it is recommended to give his set of Laguz Gems to Reyson.

Reyson has a high base luck and resistance but his other stats are low. He has enough transformed speed to avoid getting doubled on easier difficulties and will rarely get crit on, but he is otherwise extremely frail and rarely survives one round of combat, so he must be kept out of danger (this is mitigated by his mobility and canto). His only strong growth is luck, so he will continue to be extremely frail. The only practical benefit to leveling him is to learn more Chant abilities, especially Valor which fills a unit's laguz gauge, but reaching the necessary levels is not practical without significant grinding or bonus experience.

Reyson has the Blessing skill which heals adjacent units at the start of each turn. This is valuable as it helps free up other stave-users' turns. As Reyson cannot fight, offensive skills are useless. Miracle and Shade are skills that help him survive should the player make a mistake.

Reyson has a fire affinity which gives a useful attack and accuracy boost. As Reyson is incapable of any offense, this is an affinity that purely benefits his partner. As he is forced onto Tibarn's team for Part IV, he should partner with units on Ike's team in Part III that have the freedom to move to Tibarn's team and complement his affinity. In particular, Part III combat units with a fire affinity can significantly benefit such as Boyd, Mia, and Marcia.

Quotes

Battle quotes

I'll go on ahead. Sorry for not being able to help...
— An unused quote intended to be Reyson's escape quote in Path of Radiance.
Ashnard: Galdr singer, did you come here today so that I might take ownership of you?
Reyson: I have something to ask you. Were you the one who stole the medallion and my sister, Lillia, from Serenes Forest?
Ashnard: You know that already, do you not? Why would you come all this way to ask something you already know? Do you wish me to deny it?
Reyson: If the dark god is awakened, the world will once again be flooded. And this time, even our continent will fall. You will not survive that event... Do you truly desire such an end?
Ashnard: I do. Oh, how I do... It's true. The world may be destroyed by the coming of the dark god. Then again, it may not. I question the way in which our society is designed. No matter what strength a person has, it is the station he is born into that controls his destiny. And you cannot control where you will be born. Do you believe that a person of low birth should simply endure the curse of his station? I think not. If you are stronger than those around you, you should benefit from your strength. This is why I will use my strength to remake this world. Class and rank will not matter. Human and sub-human will not matter. The strong will possess everything. The weak will submit to their will. Is this not the meaning of peace?
Reyson: Are you saying that the lives of those without strength have no value?
Ashnard: That is the natural order. The only way for the weak to survive is to cling to the strong. Our discussion is over. Tell me, frail little bird who cannot fight; which do you choose? Submission? Or death?
Reyson: ...Life proffered to me by your hand is something I would never accept!
Ashnard: Very well... Then I will give you the alternative! You will be a weight around my neck no more!

— Reyson, when fighting Ashnard in the Endgame of Path of Radiance.
Ugh... I've done all I can to help you... Sorry, but...I've got to leave the battlefield...
— Reyson's escape quote in Radiant Dawn.
Valtome: Oh, how quaint...a bird. Do you seek to defeat me? Haven't you herons learned it's not safe to play with senators? Uwee hee hee! Beg for my mercy!
Reyson: Mercy will be done when you and your fellows are gone from this world.

— Reyson, when fighting Valtome in Part IV, Chapter 2 of Radiant Dawn.
Izuka: Hm, a heron. I was disappointed with the results of my heron trials. Your frail bodies succumb to the poisons too quickly.
Reyson: Despicable butcher! This forsaken place will be your tomb, and it won't be soon enough.

— Reyson, when fighting Izuka in Part IV, Chapter 5 of Radiant Dawn.
Hetzel: You look so much like Rafiel... Is there anything in the world so beautiful as a Serenes heron?
Reyson: I was born this way, and mere birth is not praiseworthy. Praise me instead for my strength. What I look like is irrelevant, so long as I have the power to protect my friends.

— Reyson, when fighting Hetzel in Part IV, Endgame (1) of Radiant Dawn.
Lekain: You're quite tenacious for a heron. I thought your entire fragile race had been exterminated...
Reyson: Evil... You are pure evil. I hear it in your heart. How do you even survive?
Lekain: How pathetic. Hated by a heron, the only sub-human so weak as to actually be incapable of violence. This must feel just like the massacre to you: completely helpless before your inevitable doom!

— Reyson, when fighting Lekain in Part IV, Endgame (1) of Radiant Dawn.

Death quotes

Reyson: Urgh...
Tibarn: Reyson, withdraw! Leave the rest to us. Do you understand?
Reyson: I'm sorry...

— Reyson, in part four of Chapter 17 of Path of Radiance, if Tibarn was not defeated previously.
Reyson: Urgh...
Tibarn: Reyson! This way.
Reyson: Pah! Who are these humans? They're ridiculously strong!

— Reyson, in part four of Chapter 17 of Path of Radiance if Tibarn was defeated prior.
...Urgh... I am sorry. This wound prevents me from repaying my debt. ...I shall return to Phoenicis. Janaff, Ulki, you must aid them where I cannot.
— Reyson, up to Chapter 21 of Path of Radiance.
Aaah... I can no longer help you... My apologies... I must leave the field...
— Reyson, in Chapter 22 of Path of Radiance.
Reyson: Urgh! I will not be defeated here... I must...for Lillia's sake!
Ike: Reyson! I understand how you feel, but you cannot go on! You must withdraw!
Reyson: I am no longer fighting for my family alone. I wish to help you and your sister.
Ike: For someone who knows nothing of fighting, you've done more than enough already. I... I've no wish to rob Leanne of her own brother. Please...for me.
Reyson: I understand... Ike, you must be careful. I would not see you die.

— Reyson, between Chapters 23 and 28 of Path of Radiance.
Reyson: Urrgh... So close... I've come so close! I cannot withdraw now!
Ike: You have to stop, Reyson! I promise you, I will see your wish fulfilled. Please, believe me.
Reyson: ... Forgive me. There's no need for you to shoulder my personal burdens. Fight for your own reasons.
Ike: They're the same, aren't they? All of us here, we're fighting for the same thing, and we will win!

— Reyson, in the Endgame of Path of Radiance.
Reyson: Ugh... Forgive me... I've... I've no strength left...
Ike: Reyson! Fall back, now! Your life's worth more than your songs. Don't throw it away.
Reyson: As you command... I leave this in your hands...

— Reyson, in Radiant Dawn.
Reyson: Ah...urgh... Please...forgive me... I can fight no more...
Ike: Reyson! Fall back now! We can make do without your galdr, but we need you alive.
Reyson: Understood. It's all up to you now.

— Reyson, in Part IV, Endgame (1) of Radiant Dawn.

Reyson is one of the heron laguz, a group said to be the most beautiful of the winged laguz. He was once the third prince of Serenes, but the kingdom fell after its people were subjected to a terrible massacre. Rescued by Tibarn, Reyson took refuge in Phoenicis. He developed a hatred for the beorc, who devastated his kingdom, and even considered revenge by using forbidden magic to bring about untold destruction. When Reyson transforms, he takes the form of a heron with pristine white wings. His voice resonates from the sky, supporting his allies with the power of galdrar! Perhaps it’s a result of living with the hawk laguz, but Reyson is a lot more bold and aggressive than his looks would suggest. Even Ike was impressed, so I can’t wait to see what he can do for us!

Notes

  1. In the Japanese version of Radiant Dawn, the Library states that Rafiel is the "first prince",[1] Reyson is the "third prince",[2] Lillia is the "third princess",[3] and Leanne is the "fourth princess".[4] This implies that they had at least three other siblings who have never been named.
