Balmung (Japanese: バルムンク Balmunc) is a regalia sword which was introduced in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is the holy weapon once wielded by Odo of the Twelve Crusaders, bestowed upon him at the Miracle of Darna after his blood-bond with a dragon. The blade is the property of Odo's descendants, the royal family of Isaach, and can only be wielded by those in possession of major Odo Holy Blood.
History
In Isaach's war with Grannvale, upon hearing of his father Mananan's cruel death at the hands of the Grannvale forces, Crown Prince Mariccle set out with the Balmung to confront his father's killers, but was himself killed in battle. The Balmung was taken and eventually ended up placed within the Yied Shrine, guarded by its Loptyrian occupants, and remained there for two decades.
Eventually, Mariccle's son Shanan came to hear rumours of the blade's entombment at the Shrine and set out to attempt to procure it. He was beaten to it, however, by the thief Patty, who had decided to rob the Shrine of her own accord. As the two fled from the pursuing Loptyrian forces, Patty eagerly handed the Balmung over to Shanan upon learning of his identity, and Shanan wielded it for the rest of the liberation war under Seliph.
Millennia later, the blade came into the possession of the Grimleal, and was given to its reincarnation of the Deadlord Simia. By this point, Balmung is no longer sealed to the Odo bloodline and is capable of being used by any sword-wielder of reasonable skill.

Balmung is present as a skill on one card in Fire Emblem Cipher: B08-076SR Astral Sword Sovereign, Shanan. It is a manual-activation skill which allows the player to, for the cost of flipping two bond cards face-down, discard their entire hand and replace it with an equal number of cards drawn from the Retreat Area which depict Shanan, potentially giving the player a significant stockpile of cards to spend on having Shanan evade attacks or inflict critical hits.
Trivia
- In Genealogy, while the Crusader weapons cannot normally be sold to the pawn shop and leave their initial owner's possession, a ppglitch]] involving the Valkyrie Staff can be exploited to transfer Balmung out of Shanan's inventory and into Larcei or Ulster's. This requires that Holyn was their father, giving them major Odo blood.
- First, Shanan must be killed while he has Balmung equipped.
- Once Shanan is dead, access the Valkyrie Staff menu and press X on Shanan to view his profile. While viewing his profile, press L or R, then exit his profile with B, then view his profile again with X. Balmung will have changed into an Iron Lance with 98 uses.
- Exit the Valkyrie Staff menu, save the game, then reset the game.
- If all steps are completed properly, Balmung will appear in the castle armory, and Larcei or Ulster can buy it and equip it in battle.
