— Gaius, to Chrom

Gaius (Japanese: ガイア Guire) is a playable character in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is a Thief living in Ylisse and will do any job if paid the right price. He loves sweets and has candy hidden all over his body.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

He appears as an enemy in Chapter 6 with Validar's forces. While most of the others under Validar's command entered Ylisstol to assassinate Emmeryn, Gaius was only told that they were going to rob a vault.[1] Gaius, having no intention of harming Emmeryn, even calling her as a "sweet lady",[2] is then easily persuaded to switch sides by Chrom and Lissa's bag of sweets after a brief conversation.

Despite not being a legacy character, there is a unique item named for Gaius available through the Barracks or event tiles: Gaius's Confect.

Personality

Gaius is a cool and collected individual. Although he is a professional thief, he is loyal to his morals, refusing to participate in Validar's assassination attempt on Emmeryn. This is further proved when he stays loyal to the group, while understanding some of the Shepherd's view on him, shrugging them off immediately and reassuring them his loyalty. Another example is when he refused to harm Maribelle in the past and tried to help out Chrom and Lissa with stuff he believed was a must be for anyone, regardless of their social standing. Gaius is also a slob; he does not see any problems with wearing the same clothes for an extended amount of time until Cordelia convinced him to tidy himself up. His hobbies include honey collecting, sewing, card tricks, and making his own confections.

He is aloof and loves sweets and candies; to a degree it is implied he gets paid with them instead of gold. His in-game expressions are references to this, with him saying things like "Piece of cake" or "Sweet" when he levels up or receives help from an ally.

He gets the most nosebleeds in the army. In conversations, he tends to give other people nicknames, with all known nicknames detailed in the following table. In conversations with Sully, she is the one that gives him one instead: "Chuckles".

Character Nickname Notes
Robin "Bubbles" Used regardless of Robin's gender.
Chrom "Blue" Due to his hair.
Lissa "Princess" Mocking her delicateness.
Virion "Your lordship" Used ironically to refer to his dukedom status.
Miriel "Specs" Short for "spectacles", or glasses.
Sumia "Stumbles" Due to her clumsiness.
Maribelle "Twinkles" Mocking her nobility.
Panne "Whiskers" Due to her animal appearance.
Nowi "Kid" Due to her young appearance.
Libra "Padre" Italian for "priest".
Tharja "Sunshine" Used ironically to mock her gloomy demeanor.

Endings

Gaius, Candy Stealer (single ending)
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Tales of Sticky-Fingers Gaius are still told in taverns everywhere.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Robin, High Deliverer
Many wrote of Robin's legendary exploits, but accounts of her origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone—she loved her husband, Gaius, above all else.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Lissa always insisted on going along, and the two survived many a comically dire predicament together.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Sully, Crimson Knight
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Sully disapproved and was said to pester her husband to take the examination for Ylissean knighthood instead.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Miriel, Rapier Intellect
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Miriel soon began researching new and more-powerful sweeteners for her husband to enjoy.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. His wife, Sumia, raised pegasi, and her flower-petal readings were said to bring good luck to all.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Maribelle, Dire Damsel
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Having studied to become a magistrate, Maribelle feared the day she would meet her own husband in court.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Panne, Proud Taguel
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Amazingly, Panne dirtied her hands right along with her husband, using her keen night vision to expedite jobs.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Cordelia, Knight Paragon
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. As his wife, Cordelia was in charge of keeping law and order, Gaius dreaded the thought of seeing her on the job.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Nowi, Eternal Youth
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Nowi found her husband's work intriguing and was said to often come along and help out.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Tharja, Grim Stalker
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Meanwhile, his wife, Tharja, set up shop and hexed people for a living. The pair were said to get many odd looks.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Olivia, Shrinking Violet
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. His wife, Olivia, wandered down more than one dark alley just to make sure he was safe and sound.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Cherche, Wyvern Friend
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. When her work in Rosanne was done, Cherche would return home and cook for her husband, much to his delight.

Gaius is a thief who mainly operates in the Halidom of Ylisse. But apparently he used to go thieving all across the world! Having crept into the castle on a job to steal Ylisse’s national treasures, Gaius realized that he’d been had—his client’s real goal was the assassination of the Exalt, Emmeryn. Gaius decided to abandon the job and approached Chrom, the prince of Ylisse, eventually joining his army instead. And what did Gaius ask for as payment? Just a few sweets, that’s all! It turns out Gaius has an incorrigible sweet tooth, and there’s nothing he loves more than candy. Well, I’ll make sure that the Order of Heroes remains well supplied with treats—just don’t eat it all at once, Gaius!

Trivia

Gaius's swimsuit CG from Summer Scramble.
  • Gaius placed fourth in the men's bracket on the official Awakening website's character popularity poll.[3] Like the other high ranking characters in said poll he received a swimsuit graphic in the Scramble series of Awakening's DLC; specifically in Summer Scramble.
  • In Gaius's swimsuit graphic, he has a piece of cloth tied around his left forearm. It is possible, and heavily implied by Gaius's conversation with Anna,[4] that this is meant to cover up his convict's tattoo mentioned in his support conversation with Robin.[5]
    • The cloth around his arm also appears in the artwork for his Thief Exposed variant in Heroes.
