You know, we've known each other for a long time, so I understand you... But listen, Marisa, it wouldn't hurt you to be a bit more sociable. Not for me, mind you, but some of the others have a hard time working with you.
— Gerik to Marisa on her interactions with others

Marisa (Japanese: マリカ Marica), is a Myrmidon who first appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She is from the country of Jehanna, on the continent of Magvel. She is a member of Gerik's Mercenaries and known as the Crimson Flash. She is a distant individual and dedicated to honing her skills.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Role

In Eirika's route, Marisa appears as an enemy myrmidon hired by the enemy side. However, Gerik talks to her and says that if she betrays her employer, she'll soil her name. Marisa asks him what he would like her to do; Gerik says he would prefer for her to join him. Quickly, Marisa decides to join Eirika. Afterwards, she continues to fight with Eirika's army for the rest of the game.

In Ephraim's route, she first appears in Chapter 10 in a village, saying that she cannot use a certain item yet. She then leaves, and the player receives a Hero Crest. Then, in Chapter 12, Ewan appears in the beginning of the chapter, saying that he is looking for a woman named Marisa who was mistakenly sent to Taizel, the setting of the chapter, instead of somewhere else. Afterwards, Ewan can talk to Marisa and convinces her to join Ephraim's army.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Marisa is not very useful. She joins around the midgame as a myrmidon with low bases, weapon levels, base level, but high growths. Because of the low enemy quality in The Sacred Stones, the predominant physical weapon types are axes and lances due to their easy access to 1-2 range. Swords as such are quite burdening to its users as many enemies carry 1-2 range weapons, and due to the high enemy quantity in the game, it can be quite tedious to be able to kill only one 1 enemy on player phase, when units with access to 1-2 range can defeat a much bigger number of said enemies during enemy phase. However, this is not Marisa's only flaw, as her low bases prevent her from contributing much at base. Marisa also only joins with a D rank in swords, and while she does have the very useful Shamshir with her, said sword can be traded to a better unit, and without it Marisa is stuck with a steel sword for damage, which will noticeably slow her down due to her low constitution of 5.

Marisa has the choice between promoting to a Swordmaster or Assassin. Due to her low strength, it might seem natural to promote Marisa to Assassin to give her access to Silencer, however, Silencer is overly unreliable to be used consistently, and the Swordmasters +2 strength promotion bonus and +15 critical hit boost are much better. Marisa is also in competition for hero crests against Gerik and Joshua who are much better than Marisa by the time she joins the army.

Overall, Marisa is not very good, and even if given investment, her lack of 1-2 range and a mount prevent her from contributing much at all.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

Marisa is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the The Sacred Stones character set. She is also present in Awakening's DLC as an enemy in Smash Brethren 2 and 3 and Rogues & Redeemers 1, 2, and Rogues & Redeemers 3.

Personality

Marisa is a quiet myrmidon who is not very sociable and is very dedicated to improving her skill at the sword. She even sleeps on her right side so she can quickly grab her sword with her dominant left hand.[2] She is known as the Crimson Flash, both among her fellow mercenaries and outside fighters.

She has had much experience fighting as a mercenary. To those not familiar with her mannerisms, she often accidentally comes across as a vicious individual,[3] but she is simply blunt and awkward in conversation and only wishes to handle her jobs to her employer's satisfaction and hone her skills. She does not appear to hold any particular feelings on her reputation as a frightening person, as she shows no emotional reaction to when Colm apologizes for calling her a "scary woman".[4] While she is dedicated to her performance, she is willing to abandon her perfect performance record at Gerik's behest when she ends up assigned to fighting her own guild-mates accidentally.[5]

Outside of fighting for Gerik's Mercenaries she is somewhat directionless, letting others make decisions for her and just going along with them; for example, she asks Gerik if he thinks she should be more sociable and follows his wish, although she does not do very well.[6] In another instance, she easily accepts that she and Tana are friends, although she is quite unfamiliar with the concept.[7]

She has feelings for Gerik, and tries to please him by acting "sociable", but grows flustered, which is an incredibly rare reaction for her, when Gerik, who is caught off guard by her uncharacteristic behavior, laughs at her attempts.[6] To others, she is often thought of as intimidating, although she is just dedicated to her training. She appears to only have an attraction to Gerik and bluntly shows no interest in other men.[8]

Her father was a very skilled swordsman of Jehanna who trained her from when she was young in the ways of the sword. He even had taught her not to move while sleeping.[9] She thinks of him as a parent and a teacher, but also a mountain she must conquer; in her fighting, she believes that once she can surpass her father, she will be able to accomplish anything. However, according to her, she is only at the base.[10] During battle she does not see her opponents, only the shadow of her father.[11][12]

Today I’ll be introducing you to Marisa, a member of Gerik’s Mercenaries. She’s a master swordswoman they call the Crimson Flash! Marisa comes from Jehanna. Her father was apparently a harsh instructor in the ways of swordsmanship, and when she joined Gerik’s Mercenaries, she quickly became essential to the team. She doesn’t talk much, and she might come across as blunt and aloof at times, but I hear she’s got a big crush on someone! I wonder who it is? Marisa might be an intimidating fighter who never lets her guard down, but she’s a softy on the inside. I hope her crush can keep up with her, whoever they are!
