Worrying that the merging of the Begnion armies could spell the end of the war, Ranulf suggests to Ike that they regroup in Gallia. Unfortunately, the merging of the armies means that the Laguz Alliance is caught between the two, making retreating difficult. Tibarn then arrives covered in blood, worrying the two further. While Tibarn rests, his partners, Janaff and Ulki, inform Ranulf of the situation: Naesala and the ravens have betrayed them once again, leading the Hawk Army to a trap helmed by General Zelgius. According to Janaff, Zelgius stopped fighting midway and allowed them to return home, saying that he had "delayed [them] long enough". When the hawks returned to Phoenicis, they found that it was almost entirely wiped out.
Later, Skrimir and Tibarn meet up with Ike, Ranulf, and Soren, and they discuss their strategy for retreating. To cross the Ribahn, they would have the main forces attack the Central Army head-on, while Ranulf and small group of forces distract Zelgius. Meanwhile, Ike and another group, carried by the hawks, would attack the senators' supply camp, which would alert Zelgius to fall back to aid them. Skrimir reluctantly agrees to Soren's plan.
Before the Laguz Alliance begins their assault, Levail informs Zelgius of the situation, noting incoming fog that may hinder the hawks. Zelgius suggests that they fog may help the hawks more than hinder them. The Laguz Alliance's main forces begin their attack, sending beast tribe soldiers across the river. Tibarn and his hawks, meanwhile, attack Begnion from above, taking down their ballistae. As Zelgius fights, he senses the presence of Ranulf's forces, and moves back to engage them. Ranulf and his group then drop in, and he confronts Zelgius one-on-one. On the other side of the river, the senators are woken up by the war, and the hawks drop the Greil Mercenaries off at their camp, where they begin their mission.
The Greil Mercenaries then set fire to Begnion's supplies and let loose their horses, sowing chaos among them. Meanwhile, Zelgius corners Ranulf, and the two duel briefly. Before Zelgius can finish him off, however, Tibarn swoops in to deflect his blade, saving Ranulf. A soldier then alerts Zelgius of the burning supplies, and he is forced to retreat. As Ranulf is too wounded to move, Tibarn carries him off back to the main army.
Beginning log
The apostle Sanaki, empress of the Begnion Empire, does not wish war with the laguz and searches feverishly for a peaceful resolution. However, many imperial senators see the war not only as a means to expand their own influence but also as a convenient opportunity to exterminate the laguz once and for all. These ambitious senators meet with Vice-Minister Lekain and vigorously advocate a full-scale war. Having seen their homeland invaded, Begnion citizens desiring peace are now few and far between. Against the apostle's wishes, Begnion's military is now fully committed to the war with the laguz. Zelgius easily escapes the talons of the bird tribes meant to delay him and the Central Army. He arrives at the Sestohl Plains to reinforce his weakened allies. The laguz forces are surprised by the sudden appearance of this new enemy and seek counsel from Ranulf of Gallia. Ranulf orders a retreat with all speed, thus avoiding a full-on engagement with the Central Army. General Zelgius chooses not to pursue the fleeing Gallian Army. Instead, he orders his army to hold position on the eastern banks of the Ribahn. Divided by the river, the two armies are deadlocked, able to do little more than glare at one another in hatred.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
When going for maximum bonus experience, note that the Horses provide it when they are kept alive, not if they escape; so, despite what may have been implied by the plot, it is best to simply leave the stables alone instead of breaking their doors open. As for the Senators, they produce an interesting dilemma; they drop items that can be sold for great amounts of gold, but killing the Senators to do so will deprive the player of bonus experience. To circumvent this, Heather can be deployed so that she can steal the items, which will keep them alive and also allow the player to receive the bonus experience from them. This itself produces a different dilemma however, as it means sacrificing a limited deployment slot to a unit with very limited utility otherwise.
