“ | Sigurd and the few soldiers left in Chalphy are out here fighting for their lives! I can't just leave them hanging... | ” | — Azelle |
---|
Azelle (Japanese: アゼル Azel) was a nobleman of House Velthomer of Grannvale, and the younger half-brother of its Duke Arvis. In Grann 757, he set out to join Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion of Grannvale, having heard of the threat to Edain of Yngvi by Verdane forces, along with his best friend, Lex of Dozel.
Biography
Azelle was one of the many illegitimate children of Duke Victor of Velthomer, and his mother was a maidservant to Victor's wife, Cigyun, who was a plain woman who had had a difficult childhood; Azelle was conceived as the result of drunken behavior by Victor, in what may have been a rape. When Victor learned of the maid's pregnancy, he violently attempted to drive the maid away, which Cigyun attempted to stop. Azelle was born just before Victor committed suicide and Cigyun disappeared. When Victor's legitimate son Arvis took the Velthomer throne, although he had the rest of Victor's conquests and illegitimate children exiled, he took Azelle and the maid in and treated them as his own family, although the maid died some ten years after this.[2]
Growing up among the nobility of Grannvale, Azelle became close friends with Lex of Dozel and Tailtiu of Friege. Early in the Verdane raid on Grannvale, Azelle and Lex arrived from the north to assist Sigurd in fighting the invasion in opposition to Arvis's wishes, though Lex teased Azelle over how the latter may have actually been motivated to help by his infatuation with Edain.[3] Following the Verdane skirmish, he continued to fight with Sigurd in Agustria, Silesse and beyond until his presumed death in the Battle of Belhalla.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
As a unit
Azelle joins in the Prologue in the first generation of Genealogy of the Holy War; he is the second unmounted unit in the chapter, the first being Arden, and the first of the three mages of the first generation. Azelle remains unmounted until he promotes; Genealogy of the Holy War has very large maps dominated by mounted units, and Azelle will fall behind all of them with no way to catch up, making it difficult to level Azelle up to the point where he can promote.
Unlike Lex, who joins alongside him, Azelle has the Follow-Up skill, which allows him to double. His magic and speed at base are enough for him to one-round many enemies in the Prologue and Chapter 1, since they have low resistance and wield heavy axes, and even if he doesn't kill them in one round, he can severely weaken enemies so that someone can finish them off. He also has a good magic growth, the highest of any potential father in generation 1, and a high speed growth. Azelle is specialized in fire magic: he has minor Fjalar Holy Blood, which improves his magic growth and raises his fire magic rank to B, granting him immediate use of Elfire, available in Chapter 3. However, the Fire tome he joins with weighs him down by twelve, which hinders his ability to double in later chapters due to fire tomes being the heaviest in the game; it is best to switch to Thunder, which first becomes available in Chapter 2, and later to Wind, which is first available in Chapter 4, as they will weigh him down less, allowing Azelle to double more consistently.
Azelle can battle in the arena for additional experience, but he struggles to clear it without significant effort and investment, such as giving him several rings and rigging difficult fights. Azelle is a good user of the Magic Ring, as there are not many combat mages in generation 1 who compete for the item, and it is available early, at the end of Chapter 1. He might also want the Speed Ring to double more enemies more often, even with lighter tomes, or to avoid damage better.
Azelle's promotion grants him decent stat boosts, a B rank in swords, thunder magic, and wind magic, an A rank in fire magic, and he becomes mounted. The mount is the most useful aspect of promotion for Azelle, as it significantly increases his movement—allowing him to keep up with the mounted units that he previously could not—and grants him Canto. Azelle is one of only two mounted magic users in the army, the other being a promoted Lachesis; as such, he will have a niche among mounts in attacking low-resistance enemies for high damage, as most other mounted units can only deal magic damage with magic swords and have low magic. Additionally, he can engage several enemies on enemy phase with 1-2 range, though he is not especially defensive and may die without terrain to increase his avoid.
After promotion, Azelle reliably has the highest magic of all sword-wielders, and is the best user of magic swords such as the Light Brand. Getting 50 kills on the Light Brand gives it the Critical skill, making Azelle even better at combat while he wields it, and having a Light Brand with Critical in the second generation is also helpful. The sword casts a 14-might light magic spell at 2-range and only weighs 5, making it better than most tomes; moreover, while wielding the Light Brand at 2-range, Azelle has weapon triangle advantage over anima magic users, increasing his avoid and accuracy by 20 when he fights them, which improves his survivability.
As a father
As a father, Azelle will pass down the coveted Follow-Up skill, but will also pass down mage stats which few children appreciate; Tailtiu and Lachesis are the only two mothers whose children want Follow-Up and would not mind the mage stats. Tailtiu's children, Tine and Arthur, are Mages; while Arthur will be made better by Lewyn—who grants him Major Forseti blood and the Forseti— he offers less to Tine than Azelle does, and his Adept and Critical, while useful, are not as reliable as Follow-Up. Lachesis's daughter Nanna appreciates the magic boost to improve her healing role, and her son Diarmuid can inherit Azelle's swords and use magic swords to fight instead of physical swords if he's promoted to Mage Knight; however, Azelle has less of an impact on Nanna than Lachesis, and Diarmuid prefers physical fathers to boost his high strength, which he will always have a higher base and growth in than magic, regardless of his father. Edain is also worth noting as a pairing, as Azelle can give her the Rescue staff in an event in Chapter 4 if the two are lovers; however, Claud can have an event with Edain in Chapter 5 that also grants Rescue, and an Azelle-fathered Lana cannot inherit Rescue while a Claud-fathered Lana can. If Azelle is Lester's father, he will get Follow-Up, but he won't be able to inherit any bow, while Lana will appreciate the magic boost and will be able to use Elfire on promotion.

Personality
Though he hated fighting,[4] Azelle was nonetheless driven to support Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion by the threat it posed to Edain's life, as a result of his ongoing romantic interest in Edain herself[3] which he developed upon first meeting her at a young age.[5] Despite holding a deep respect for him as both a brother and a father figure, Azelle was terrified of Arvis[6] and believed that he considered him to be a nothing but a burden incapable of meeting his expectations.[7]

- ↑ "Also, Arvis exiled all but one of his father Victor's mistresses. He ordered their children to be demoted to servants or exiled. The only mistress left was a girl who was his mother Cigyun's maid servant. Although she went through a tough childhood and wasn't beautiful, she had a kind heart and frequently took care of Arvis. Even Arvis could not be cruel towards her.
Although Victor got his hands on the girl from the momentum of being drunk, when he knew the girl got pregnant he yelled, cursed, used violence, and tried to drive her away. The person who scolded at this was Cigyun, and the very child who this girl got pregnant with was in fact Azelle. When Victor died, Azelle was just born.
Arvis hated (like truly hated) his father for making mother sad for immature thoughts. When that father commited suicide, and Cigyun ran away, a cold mask always floated around the young expression. But, he thought of that mistress and Azelle as his own family.
From there, the mistress was grateful for Arvis, and served him by taking care of the space around him, but she also died of disease around 10 years later.
From then on, there was no sight of a woman around Arvis." — Designers' notes from Fire Emblem: Treasure, translated by Serenes Forest, Retrieved: August 8, 2015 - ↑ 3.0 3.1 "Azelle: Yeah, but with the military on engagement to Isaach, Grannvale's completely strapped!
