Oooh! You're here? Then the ritual actually worked? Ahem... Oh Great Hero from another world! Thou hast come so far to fulfill your role in our legend! For our kingdom now stands on the very brink of ruin, and thou... And thou... Hold on. Are you really our Great Hero? You don't look like the thee-and-thou type.
— Anna

The Preface (Japanese: 破章 Broken Chapter) is the opening chapter of Fire Emblem Heroes. It depicts the summoning of the "Great Hero" to the World of Zenith by Anna, commander of the Order of Heroes. It is largely a tutorial chapter, with its two maps featuring little gameplay.

The Preface is played when the player launches the game for the first time. Unlike the other Story Maps in Heroes, the Preface's maps cannot be replayed at any point, unless the player deletes the game's data and starts afresh.

Plot

Main article: Preface/Script

Part 1: "I summon thee!"

The story begins as the player is summoned into a strange world, with Anna standing before them. Quickly getting over her surprise at the summoning ritual having worked, she proceeds to greet Kiran to her world, but stops briefly to wonder if the player is actually the prophesied "Great Hero" of legend. Before she can explain to the player where they are, though, an Axe Fighter from the Emblian Empire shows up, and tries to attack. The Axe Fighter proves to be no match for Anna, however, and is quickly dispatched.

After the battle is won, Anna introduces herself as commander of the Order of Heroes, and explains that the Order fights for the freedom of the Heroes of various worlds such as those of Awakening and Birthright, in opposition to the Emblian Empire, who seek to enslave the Heroes instead. She states that Embla is planning to invade her country of Askr, and she and the player hurry onwards to stop them.

Part 2: The Legend

Anna shows Kiran the Breidablik, the divine relic she used to summon Kiran to her world. She explains that, according to legend, holding Breidablik high will summon the Great Hero, who will be able to wield it. Anna did so, and summoned Kiran as a result, so she gives Breidablik to Kiran, hoping that they will figure out how to use it.

Just then, another group of Emblian soldiers attack. Anna orders Kiran to escape with Breidablik while she fights them off, but just then a bright light shines from Breidablik. The archer Virion*/Takumi* emerges from the light, having been summoned by Breidablik. Together with the freshly summoned Virion/Takumi, Anna is able to defeat the latest batch of Emblian soldiers. She thanks Kiran for summoning Virion/Takumi to help, and formally welcomes them to the Order of Heroes.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Part 1: "I summon thee!"

This map functions as a simple tutorial level. Simply follow the instructions given by the game, and Anna will easily defeat the enemy Axe Fighter.

Part 2: The Legend

On turn 1, you are forced to move Virion/Takumi first, to attack the nearby Axe Fighter. Do so, and then finish him off with Anna. At the beginning of turn 2, Anna's special skill, Night Sky, should be ready. You can use this to defeat the remaining Bow Fighter in a single attack.

Starting from version 2.5.0, the game will guide you through each move, so the battle is impossible to lose. Simply follow the game's instructions to win.

Trivia

  • Prior to the release of version 2.5.0 of Heroes, it was possible for the player to lose the battle in Part 2, if they did not move and simply allowed the enemy to attack and defeat both Anna and Virion. Starting from version 2.5.0, the player is instead guided through each move by the game, and forced to attack the enemy units, thus rendering defeat impossible.
