“ | Oh my! A new addition to the Officers Academy! I am so very pleased to meet you, Professor. I am Seteth's little sister, Flayn. I am so happy to make your acquaintance. | ” | — Flayn introducing herself |
---|
Flayn (pronounced /fleɪn/[key]; Japanese: フレン Flayn) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. While she claims to be a young girl who is the younger sister of Seteth, assistant to the Archbishop Rhea, her true identity is Cethleann (pronounced /sɛθ'lin/[key]; Japanese: セスリーン Cethleann), one of the saints of the Church of Seiros, who has recently reawakened.
Biography
Flayn, born Cethleann, was one of the Children of the Goddess that lived in the ancient Fódlan. She was born and raised in Enbarr by her father, Cichol, and her mother.[2][3] Some time afterwards, she joined forces with Seiros, who was the only survivor of Nemesis's attack on Zanado; Cethleann became one of the legendary Four Saints along with her father and fellow Children of the Goddess Macuil and Indech, gifted her blood to Seiros's Adrestian allies, and aided in Seiros's quest to defeat Nemesis and avenge their fallen kin.[4] During the fighting with Nemesis, Cethleann lost her mother and was herself grievously injured, and spent the next several centuries in a coma while under care of her father.[5] She awoke in 1179,[6] by which point Cichol had become a high-ranking administrator for the Church of Seiros under the alias "Seteth".[7] Cethleann took the alias "Flayn" and took up residence at Garreg Mach Monastery, pretending to be Seteth's younger sister.
In 1180, Flayn is abducted by a masked knight known as the Death Knight. She is rescued by the mercenary turned professor Byleth, and joins their class at the Officers Academy out of gratitude and to protect herself. When Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg of the Adrestian Empire declares war on the Church, Flayn fights in the Battle of Garreg Mach on the Church's side, but is defeated. If Byleth sides with the Empire, Flayn abandons them to remain with the Church.
On all routes other than Crimson Flower, Flayn returns to the monastery on the day of the millennium festival, reunites with Byleth, and accompanies them throughout the war with the Empire. On the Crimson Flower route, after the fall of the Leicester Alliance, Flayn aids Seteth, non-recruited Shamir and Alois, and the Knights of Seiros in a counterattack on Garreg Mach. She is defeated, and can either be killed outright or spared along with her father and driven back into hiding.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Role
Flayn is a playable character automatically recruited at the end of Chapter 6. On the Black Eagles route, she will desert the party after Chapter 11 and become a recurring enemy should Byleth side with Edelgard.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Flayn is a prepromoted Priest, joining Byleth's class starting from mid-Part I. Her personal skill, Lily's Poise, reduces the damage taken by adjacent allies by 3, which can synergize with Sylvain's Philanderer. She has a solid Faith spell list, starting with a great C+ rank in Faith and thus having the useful Restore with no investment and learning Fortify (the only other playable unit with this spell is Mercedes) and Rescue. She has high bases and growths in magic, resistance, and charm; her resistance in particular lets her sponge magic attacks with ease. Conversely, she is very poorly suited for the front-lines, due to her low physical growths and poor speed. Her biggest weakness is that she is recruited with rather subpar stats for her join time and is likely to be outperformed by units that the player has already raised from chapter 1; she also does not have Physic, the spell that each of the main healers of their respective house has. If the player is a Black Eagle and is intending to follow the Crimson Flower route, it is essentially necessary to bench Flayn, since plot complications will cause her to permanently leave the party, rendering any need to train her unnecessary.
Her major Crest of Cethleann gives her a 50% chance of giving a small boost to the healing provided by recovery magic spells. This crest will let her restore 33% of her maximum HP while equipped with the Caduceus Staff. She can also safely wield Heroes' Relics, such as Thyrsus and Blutgang, without taking backlash damage.
Flayn has a Budding Talent in Reason, which will grant her Seal Magic once realized. This can let her inflict debuffs against magic wielders to negate their damage against the player's units. She has access to Cutting Gale and Excalibur, which have a useful bonus critical hit chance and the latter is effective against fliers, but won't become an effective mage-killer herself however, due to her low speed, which is made worse by the fact that despite having a strength in lances, her strength is too poor to use them effectively. Frozen Lance can help her on this, but it requires an A rank in lances. That said, giving her a boon in Reason just to give her easy access to the game's basic offensive magic spells is worth the Budding Talent, especially if the player intends to use her in the long run.
On non-Crimson Flower routes, Flayn may have a hard time finding a dedicated role for her to properly contribute to the team, since as mentioned earlier, she can be potentially outclassed by many other units that the player has trained from the ground up. If you are dedicated to using Flayn in the long run, there are some ways that can bring her on par with her teammates. Ideally, you should try for a side promotion to a Mage for Fiendish Blow, though since she starts with an E rank in Reason and does not have a boon in the skill initially, it will take a while for her to reach a reasonable rank to pass the Mage exam. If you want Flayn to become a magical powerhouse, promote her into a Warlock, then to a Gremory for extra spell charges for both black and white magic and marginally better movement than the advanced magic classes, or (if you have the DLC) to a Dark Flier for undeterred mobility and Black Tomefaire. You could try to promote her into a Dark Knight, though it is tougher to achieve, due to her bane in Riding. Alternatively, you could keep her in a supportive role by promoting her into a Bishop, especially since she is your only unit with Fortify if you weren't able to recruit Mercedes at all in Part I. If you're still unsure which role you want Flayn to excel in, you can opt to make Flayn a Dancer instead; since she starts with 16 charm at base, she is effectively guaranteed to win the White Heron Cup.

Abilities
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Personality
Flayn is a gentle girl who interacts with others openly, but her curiosity can make her act rashly. She does not approve of her brother's overprotection of her, and often clashes with Seteth over her wishes to be independent.
Flayn's experience and loss of her mother in the War of Heroes cause her to strongly wish for peace. One of the reasons why Seteth stayed in the Garreg Mach Monastery and helped Rhea was due to Flayn's wish for him to do so.
Flayn has a strong affinity for fish and the sea, which she associates with the happiest of her memories with her mother and father. She enjoys cooking and wants to learn her mother's fish cuisine, but her own cooking ability is very poor, even recorded in ancient books.
Flayn is very concerned about the popular evaluation of Cethleann, and is willing to tell stories of Cethleann to others. These stories rarely match the solemn and sacred image of Cethleann described by the church, but many students see traces of Cethleann through Flayn's behavior.

Endings
Flayn, Slumbering Princess (single ending)
Flayn disappeared soon after the war, and over time it was all but forgotten that she had ever existed. Many long years later, however, a young woman resurfaced in a completely transformed Fódlan. When she looked to the man who stood beside her, she wondered if it would be all right, in this new era, to call him Father.
Flayn, Slumbering Princess (single ending, Seteth died)
Flayn disappeared soon after the war, and after a time, proof of her very existence faded from memory. Many years later, a young woman appeared at the monastery, which had been restored to its former glory. Speaking to no one in particular, it is said that she gazed at the entrance and reverently whispered, "I am home."
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced his marriage to Flayn shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Flayn did not get involved in government affairs, but instead focused on making frequent public appearances, where her calm and pleasant demeanor helped endear the new leaders to the people. When Fódlan was finally restored, the couple left the throne to their children and retired to a royal villa on the Rhodos Coast of western Fódlan. They spent their remaining years there in peace, fishing a great deal. It is said that no matter their age, they always retained a youthful appearance.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced his marriage to Flayn shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Flayn chose not to get involved in management of the church, instead focusing on healing those who had been hurt by the war. Her compassionate demeanor led many to speculate that she was "the second coming of Saint Cethleann." When Fódlan was finally restored, the archbishop named a successor, and the couple retired to a royal villa on the Rhodos Coast of western Fódlan. They spent their remaining years there in peace, fishing a great deal. It is said that no matter their age, they always retained a youthful appearance.
Dimitri, Savior King & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. Some time after his coronation, he took Flayn, who now enjoyed a position of prominence in the church, as his queen. Many speculated at first that the marriage was politically motivated, but it is said that over time the love they had for one another became clear to see. Their lives were full of warmth and tranquility. Many years later, when Dimitri passed, his journals revealed that he had kept a meticulous record of all the meals he and his wife had enjoyed together.
Claude, King of Unification & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan, and asked Garreg Mach for aid. During this time, he was reunited with Flayn, who had been helping Seteth run the church. She agreed to help, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective regions, they fell deeply in love. It is said that Seteth never learned of their relationship.
Claude, King of Unification & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Seteth died)
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan, and asked Garreg Mach for aid. Alongside him was his wife, Flayn, who had gone missing during the war, but who now worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between their two lands for the sake of the late Seteth. It is said that some churchgoers disapproved of this new stance toward Almyra at first, but that Flayn's love for Claude proved to be a key inspiration in shifting the perspectives of the populace.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Ferdinand married Flayn just after becoming the new Duke Aegir, and the pair wasted no time getting to work on the rebuilding effort. While Ferdinand handled administrative matters, Flayn walked more directly among the people, seeing to their needs. Their teamwork and complementary skills led to rapid recovery and growth for the region, but it is said that what inspired the people most of all was the genuine intimacy and affection between the ruling couple.
Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Immediately after the war, Flayn disappeared from Garreg Mach. At the same time, Linhardt mysteriously abandoned his claim to House Hevring, and also vanished. It was suspected, among those who knew them, that they had eloped, although no one seemed to know just where they went. Over a decade later, well after the Officers Academy had been rebuilt, something strange happened. A sleepy young girl with antiquated clothing and the Major Crest of Cethleann enrolled. Over the next two years, a young boy and girl with that same Crest also enrolled. Though Crest scholars deduced that they must be siblings, the truth of their lineage was never definitely proven.
Dedue, Taciturn Devotee & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
After the war, Dedue returned to Fhirdiad to support King Dimitri's reign as his vassal. As he worked, his wife, Flayn, was determined to support him with home-cooked meals. Dedue patiently endured the more disastrous of his wife's experiments, while teaching her everything he knew. Eventually Flayn's talent blossomed and she became a renowned chef. It is said that those who were lucky enough to taste her cooking always asked for more, and that Dedue's eyes lit up with affection and pride when she told him what she was planning to prepare next.
Felix, Meandering Sword & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, seeking battle as if he had a death wish, but his violent path came to an end when he arrived at Garreg Mach. It was there that he reunited with Flayn, who was saddened to see that Felix had continued to use his sword to kill. She left to travel with him, and it is rumored that her kindness helped turn his life around. No one knows what became of them after that, but the tales of a deadly swordsman did suddenly cease.
Felix, The Shield's Successor & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Azure Moon)
After becoming Duke Fraldarius, Felix married Flayn, and the couple worked tirelessly to restore their territory. Thanks to Felix's dedication and Flayn's compassion, they were well loved by the people, whom they visited and spoke with frequently. Felix served as Dimitri's sworn sword throughout his reign, but when the king passed away, he gave it up in favor of a quiet life with his wife. In his later years, the sword was only used for parlor tricks, such as slicing juggled fruit out of the air—a display of skill that never failed to delight Flayn.
Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to help manage the inn that his family had opened up during his time away. Away from the battlefield and able to eat as much as he pleased, he eventually began to grow soft. It was around that time that Flayn, who had also neglected her training, came to visit. The two helped motivate one another, and together they embarked on a new exercise routine. Thereafter, it is said that their energetic shouts and cries of exertion could be heard throughout the village at any time of day.
Ignatz, Worldly Artist & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Soon after the war, Flayn disappeared. Ignatz searched unsuccessfully for her for a time, but finally gave up and went home. With hard-won permission from his family, he then set out to travel the world as an artist. Years later, his journey took him by chance to Garreg Mach, where the statue of Saint Cethleann inspired him to paint. It was then that Flayn finally appeared, wondering aloud why Ignatz was not painting her as he'd promised. Overjoyed, Ignatz devoted much of the rest of his artistic career to getting Flayn's likeness just right. Her visage was finally captured in the work he called The Second Advent of a Saint, which was widely regarded as a masterpiece.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
While Flayn disappeared soon after the war, Seteth stayed at the monastery and worked to restore the authority of the Church of Seiros. Doing away with his old strictness, he adopted a tolerant stance toward all, and encouraged his followers to do the same. When he was satisfied that the message was received, he vanished from the monastery. Several centuries later, a man and a woman in ancient attire emerged to a Fódlan that had drastically changed. When she asked the man beside her if it would be all right in this new era to call him "Father," he said that perhaps it would be better to remain on the safe side.

Trivia
- In the game's data, there's an unused variation of Flayn's S-rank support illustration which depicts Byleth with blue hair. For plot related reasons, this is only possible in the Crimson Flower route, the only path where Flayn deserts the party.
- As an enemy on the Crimson Flower route, Flayn has access to the spell Abraxas, which she can't obtain as a playable unit.
