Lorenz Hellman Gloucester (pronounced /ˈlɔɹənts ˈhɛlmən ˈɡlɒstɚ/[key]; Japanese: ローレンツ=ヘルマン=グロスタール Lorenz Hermann Gloucester) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a member of the Golden Deer house at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Lorenz is the eldest son of Count Gloucester, head of House Gloucester in the Leicester Alliance. In 1180, he enrolls in the Officers Academy at the Garreg Mach Monastery and joins the Golden Deer, studying and fighting alongside them.
After the timeskip, on the Verdant Wind route and if recruited on the Crimson Flower route, he returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth throughout the war. On the Silver Snow and Azure Moon routes, Lorenz remains with House Gloucester after it pledges loyalty to the Adrestian Empire. As a result, he eventually defends the Great Bridge of Myrddin from Byleth's chosen faction alongside Ferdinand (on Azure Moon), Ladislava and Acheron. If he was recruited to Byleth's class during Part I, he can be spared and convinced to defect to the Resistance/Kingdom forces; otherwise, he is slain in battle. Lorenz makes no appearances in the story if not recruited on the Crimson Flower route, likely due to House Gloucester canonically supporting the Empire in all routes.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Role
Lorenz is a starting playable character for the Golden Deer route, a recruitable unit on the Black Eagles and Blue Lions routes and a recurring enemy should he not be recruited during Part I. On the Silver Snow and Azure Moon routes, he will always desert your party after Chapter 12. Should he have been recruited in Part I, he can be re-recruited in Chapter 16 after defeating him in combat with any ally and choosing the 'Persuade' option.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lorenz has a balanced stat-line and straddles the line between magic and physical affinity more closely than probably any other unit in the game. He has good to average growths in strength, magic, dexterity, speed, resistance, and charm, while also having a decent HP growth, allowing him to become serviceable in nearly any class once class modifiers take effect. His balanced growths can become a double-edged sword however, since he will rarely excel in any one area more than other units, with the possible exception of Authority. His only two low growths are in luck and defense, making him more vulnerable to critical hits and physical blows. His personal skill, Distinguished House, grants him a slight boost in might while he is equipped with a battalion. Lorenz also shares a bond support with Ferdinand. This makes each unit a strong adjutant for the other as it will award the front unit a permanent +2 to Attack. Lorenz can also easily stack Ferdinand as a Guard adjutant on top of the Thyrsus for far more durability than he could typically get away with.
Lorenz possesses the Frozen Lance combat art, being able to learn the art significantly earlier at a C+ Lance rank than Ingrid and Flayn at an A rank, while Hubert and Marianne need to dedicate some tutoring sessions in their budding talent. With this art, he can deal high amounts of magical damage, made stronger with his good dexterity stat, to compensate for his somewhat middling strength stat compared to most other physical-oriented units.
Lorenz possesses the minor Crest of Gloucester which gives him a 10% chance of boosting the might of his magic spells by 5. To make use of this crest however, he needs to be promoted into a magic-wielding class, since the game defaults him to the Cavalier class if not recruited. Having this Crest allows him to wield the relic Thyrsus to its fullest potential, gaining the passive effects of Pavise and Aegis. He arguably makes better use of the added survivability than Lysithea (the only other Gloucester Crest bearer), since she is more liable to die in one or two hits regardless. Having a crest at all allows him to safely wield all other Heroes' Relics without suffering backlash damage, such as the Lance of Ruin, Lúin, Crusher, and Blutgang.
As mentioned prior, Lorenz's balanced stat-line and growths, while unlikely to be better than units with more focused growths, can allow him to fit in with nearly any class, whether physical or magical. If you want to maximize his damage with Frozen Lance and gain innate Lancefaire, promote him to a Soldier, then Cavalier, then Paladin. Being a mounted class can turn him into a decent front-line fighter by giving him a boost to his strength stat and can allow him to perform hit-and-run tactics via Canto; his decent resistance can allow him to safely tank magical attacks compared to Sylvain and Ferdinand. This pathway however, comes at the cost of his speed, bringing his average speed growth down to an unstable 30%, making him more liable to being double attacked; this contrasts towards the other units who default to the Cavalier class line (Sylvain, Ferdinand, and Leonie), who have high speed growths to offset the -10% speed penalty. If you want him to instead make use of his good magic growth and robust spell list, and take advantage of the extended attack range of Thyrsus, promote him to a Monk, then Mage, master the class for Fiendish Blow, then to a Warlock or Dark Bishop. An advantage that he has compared to most mages is that he generally has enough strength to keep him from being significantly weighed down by his spells; Lorenz can semi-reliably double some enemies with the basic Fire spell throughout most of the early game until they gradually get faster by mid-game. It should also be noted that Lorenz is one of the few magically-inclined male units barring Hubert who can perform adequately as a Dark Mage. If you so desire, you can have him master the class for Poison Strike, allowing him to contribute chip damage to weaken enemies for his allies to finish off. A magical promotion pathway synergizes well with his Crest and allows him to deal high amounts of magical damage with his spells while leaving his speed growth unharmed. Compared to the Cavalier-based promotion path, a magical promotion pathway is arguably less harmful to his overall growths. Other benefits to magical Lorenz include his relatively early access to powerful spells such as Ragnarok and Agnea's Arrow, and his defensive stats being far more reliable than other mages and allowing him to survive on the front lines where they could not. His best final class is the Dark Knight, granting him the mobility of mounted classes without a significant decrease in his speed growth (having only a 5% decrease to his speed growth compared to Paladin's 10% decrease) while retaining the ability for him to cast spells. With his decent Charm growth, albeit with a poor base, Lorenz could also be a valid candidate for the Dancer class. However, outside of the Verdant Wind or Crimson Flower routes, players will likely want to avoid this choice as Lorenz does not rejoin immediately like most units.
With the DLC special classes, he can also promote into a Trickster, granting him a significant boost to his speed growth and granting him various utility while still allowing him to cast spells. However, this path requires training him in two proficiencies that he does not excel in, along with his spell uses being halved as a Trickster.
Recruiting for Other Routes
When recruited outside of the Golden Deer route, Lorenz will come with training in Reason and lances. Additionally, recruiting Lorenz grants access to his paralogue which grants the player Thyrsus, a relic which grants +2 range to the equipping unit's maximum magic range. This boon alone makes Lorenz a valuable recruit for Black Eagles and Blue Lions players as the Thyrsus is a very desirable staff for all magical units. Moreover, Lorenz's recruitment requirements of a B in Reason and twenty charm can easily be lowered to a D+ in Reason and eight charm by achieving a B support between him and Byleth. As for his performance post-recruitment, he comes with sufficient training to immediately reclass into a Mage and is already on the path for Dark Knight. Alternatively, if you so desire, you can bench Lorenz for the rest of the game after clearing his paralogue at no additional cost. Do note that if he is recruited out of the Golden Deer and the player does not follow the Crimson Flower route, he will not reappear after the timeskip until chapter 16. When re-recruited, he will have likely fallen behind his teammates due to missing out on four chapters worth of instruction, requiring some immediate attention from the player for him to avoid falling behind.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
Lorenz was first added to the game in a special summer variation as part of the Overseas Memories update, and was made available to players in the thirtieth edition of the Tempest Trials+, "Sandy Struggle", which initially ran from July 9, 2020 through July 20, 2020. The aforementioned summer variation of Lorenz is the only one currently available in Heroes, based on his Three Houses Part I incarnation.

Personality and character
As a noble of the Leicester Alliance, Lorenz is keenly aware of his responsibilities and aims his every action towards them. He seems to firmly believe that the separation of roles between commoners and nobles is a good thing and strives to do his best at the role society has appointed him. However, his devotion tends to create an outwardly snobby demeanor, and he often ends up on the wrong side of people, particularly commoners.
Many of Lorenz's supports deal with his views of nobility clashing with the commoners at the monastery, and learning to relax some of his more detrimental habits. In his C support with Leonie, he views it as beneath him to assist her in polishing weapons. However, in their B support, Lorenz insists upon tending to her swollen ankle rather than letting her overwork herself any further, citing it as his noble duty to care for and protect the common folk. Their A and A+ detail Leonie finally convincing Lorenz that it is okay for him to deviate from his strict social duties and just be friends with her. In his supports with Raphael, he determines that eating a meal with someone allows him to get to know them better, whether commoner or noble.
Lorenz is also a bit of a womanizer, although unlike Sylvain, he makes a point not to hit on commoner females, as he could not marry them for political ties. Dorothea is somewhat insulted that Lorenz does not even bother to hit on her due to her low status, although he later comes around in their A support. In his support with Mercedes she notes that commoner women are effectively invisible to him, as he seems to show no interest in her until she reveals that she was actually born noble. By contrast, in his supports with Hilda, Lysithea, and Marianne, he actively cultivates interactions with them, but tends to always mention the political benefits of any pairings. He is not always a complete snob, though. His supports with Marianne show him recognizing her inner beauty and insisting he would rather she be happy than reveal her dark secret to him.
Within the main story, Lorenz's other notable trait is his distrust of Claude. He frequently voices dissent against Claude's schemes and often declares as fact that he, not Claude, will lead the Alliance one day. In his final support with Claude, however, he is shocked by Claude actually offering him the Alliance in the future and acknowledges that Claude has skills as a leader that he, Lorenz, cannot match.

Endings
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose (single ending, Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Soon after the war, Lorenz assumed leadership over House Gloucester and helped govern Fódlan as a representative of the old Alliance lords. His political talent yielded revolutionary policy changes, many of which were of particular benefit to the commonfolk.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose (single ending, Crimson Flower)
Soon after the war, Lorenz assumed leadership over House Gloucester and joined the realm of Imperial politics as a representative of the old Alliance lords. His political talent yielded revolutionary policy changes, many of which were particularly beneficial to the commonfolk.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced her marriage to Lorenz shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Lorenz took equally well to his dual roles as the queen's husband and the leader of House Gloucester, working simultaneously to restore his own territory and to advance the development of Fódlan at large. Because his policies were of particular benefit to the commonfolk, he was well loved, and came to be called the Lord of Roses. After many years of peace, Lorenz grew ill and withdrew from the public eye. The queen followed, entrusting the throne to the prince. It is said that he was the spitting image of his father.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced her marriage to Lorenz shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Lorenz took equally well to his dual roles as the archbishop's husband and the leader of House Gloucester, working simultaneously to restore his own territory and to support the church's efforts to restore Fódlan at large. Because his policies were of particular benefit to the commonfolk, he was well loved, and the church's authority was restored as a result. After many years of peace, Lorenz and the archbishop resigned their positions, entrusting rule of House Gloucester to their son. It is said that he was the spitting image of his father.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose (Crimson Flower)
Soon after Byleth and Lorenz had celebrated their marriage in style, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. After fighting hard to bring true peace to Fódlan, Lorenz took over as head of House Gloucester, and he and his wife focused their efforts on restoring the territory. They had an active political and military life over the years, working together to overcome many hardships. After decades of dedicated service to the people, Lorenz grew weak and retired. Byleth followed suit, and they entrusted House Gloucester to their son. It is said that he was the spitting image of his father, right down to his signature red rose.
Claude, King of Unification & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
Claude disappeared from Fódlan after the war, leaving the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz, to support the new United Kingdom of Fódlan in his stead. He proposed revolutionary policies to restore the war-torn region at a rapid rate. When the rebuilding effort was complete, Lorenz turned his eye toward diplomacy, seeking to establish treaties of friendship with foreign nations. Almyra was no exception, and when the two parties met for a summit at Fódlan's Locket, it was none other than Claude, the new king of Almyra, who arrived to negotiate. Some speculated that this meeting had been Claude's scheme all along, but Lorenz and Claude both denied it.
Dorothea, Divine Songstress & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Dorothea, who had returned to prominence with the Mittelfrank Opera Company. The elaborate wedding was the most talked-about social event of the season, and the fashions on display from the savvy nobleman and the stylish songstress set the trends with young people across Fódlan for a decade.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
After the war, Mercedes accompanied Lorenz back to his homeland. There, the young heir petitioned his father, Count Gloucester, to permit the couple to marry. Though the count initially disapproved of Mercedes's status as a commoner, he was persuaded by her virtues as a person to change his mind. In fact, he praised Lorenz for having a taste in character superior to his own. After Lorenz succeeded his father as lord of the territory, the couple finally wed. With Lorenz's stern approach to governance, and Mercedes's open mind, House Gloucester flourished under their rule.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Lysithea. Though the only daughter of the former Count Ordelia had already renounced all claim to nobility, the people happily accepted their union. She rarely appeared in public, due to health concerns, but it is said that a great many policies credited to Lorenz were actually her ideas.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Marianne. Prior to the wedding, she received extensive tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund, so that by the time they were wed she was fully prepared to govern. The pair was particularly successful in providing new innovations in dairy farming, and came to be known as the mother and father of horses and cattle in the region. It is said that Lorenz was rather vexed by the title.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Hilda, Free Spirit
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Hilda, the only daughter of Duke Goneril. After the recovery effort, at Hilda's behest, the pair established artisan academies all over Fódlan. The schools quickly flourished, invigorating interest in the arts as well as trade with foreign lands. After many years of success and prosperity, the students of the first of these academies crafted a bronze statue of the founding couple to honor their achievement. The statue stands to this day.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Leonie, who had become a renowned mercenary. The choice came as a shock to the public, who could not see what the pair had in common, but those who knew them well saw it as inevitable due to the strength of the bond they had forged in the war. As a ruling couple, they used their varying talents to usher in a new age of prosperity and carve their names into history.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Manuela, Divine Songstress
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Manuela, who had established a new school for children in a small town. Seeing the beauty in Manuela's dream, Lorenz put all his resources toward building schools like Manuela's all over Fódlan, providing education to scores of children who had been left helpless by the war. After many years of success and prosperity, a bronze statue of the couple was erected at the original school to honor their achievement. It stands to this day.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Catherine, the former Knight of Seiros. Catherine had been living a quiet life of seclusion with Rhea in the Red Canyon, and it was the encouragement of the former archbishop that persuaded her to accept Lorenz's ardent marriage proposal. Even after joining House Gloucester, however, it is said that Catherine never lost sight of her lifelong oath to guard and watch over Rhea.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Catherine, the former Knight of Seiros. Catherine had left Garreg Mach behind for a life of freedom, but was eventually persuaded to accept Lorenz's passionate marriage proposal. Even after joining House Gloucester and returning to a life among the nobility, however, it is said that Catherine much preferred relaxing in a tavern to dressing up for court.

- Unused dialogue indicates that Lorenz was planned to have been able to betray Claude and be fought as enemy in Verdant Wind Chapter 16, but this scenario was cut from the released version of the game.[2][3]
- As an enemy, Lorenz has access to the Seal Strength and Black Magic Avoid +20 abilities, which he cannot learn as a playable unit.
- Unlike most enemy units who bear abilities they cannot obtain as playable units, an enemy Lorenz has no way of benefitting from Black Magic Avoid +20, since he is never encountered as a magic-wielding class in any of his enemy appearances.
- Lorenz's sprite as a Paladin in Part II is based off the sprite of the Dark Knight class, identifiable by the dark-colored horse of the Dark Knight sprite and the lack of the lance visible in the Paladin sprite.

Lorenz Hellman Gloucester |
Full name, known by just Lorenz in most menus. Lorenz is a name derived from the Roman surname Laurentius, meaning "from Laurentum". Gloucester is a city in England; its use is likely derived from the character of the Earl of Gloucester from William Shakespeare's play King Lear, similar to other characters from Leicester having surnames derived from the names of King Lear characters. |
