“ | I've always allowed myself to follow the whims of those above me. I convinced myself that everything in life was at the will of the goddess. I was blind to reality. I believed it was her will to both pull me from the church and guide me to the Officers Academy. The decision to enter this war was the first time I acted of my own free will. | ” | — Mercedes |

Mercedes von Martritz (pronounced /mɛɹˈsɛdɛs vɒn mɑɹˈtɹitz, mɝ-, -dɛz/[key][Note 1]; Japanese: メルセデス=フォン=マルトリッツ Mercedes von Maltritz) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Blue Lions.
Biography
Mercedes was born to House Martritz of the Adrestian Empire, but the house fell into ruin when she was an infant. Her mother remarried into House Bartels and bore her stepfather a son, Emile, but her stepfather only valued her mother for her Crest. When she was approximately nine, she and her mother fled House Bartels and left Emile behind at his own request. The two traveled to Faerghus, and Mercedes came to reside at a church. She was eventually adopted by a greedy merchant who also sought to marry her off for her Crest. She enrolled in the Mage School of the kingdom's capital and became good friends with Annette. In 1180, she enrolled in the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery and joined the Blue Lions, studying and fighting alongside them.
After the timeskip, if Mercedes is a member of Byleth's class, she returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. If not recruited on the Verdant Wind route, she reunites with Dimitri and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder, and can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. If not recruited on the Crimson Flower route, she fights alongside Dimitri at the Tailtean Plains, and is slain by Imperial forces. Mercedes makes no appearances in the story on the Silver Snow route, but it is most likely she's one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Mercedes is the quintessential healer of the Blue Lions; accordingly, Mercedes has good bases and growths in magic and resistance, though at the cost of being mostly subpar to average in all other stats, and an excellent white magic spell list. At C-rank, she gets the essential Physic, allowing her to help her allies from afar. At B-rank, Mercedes gets the surprisingly rare Restore, which can be used to mass heal the rattled status after a group of units get hit by an enemy gambit. And finally, at A-rank, Mercedes gets Fortify to heal all units within a range, a spell which proves essential on more chaotic maps with enemies on all sides or maps consisting primarily of difficult terrain. Mercedes' fantastic white magic spells benefit her in two ways. First, the range of her spells enable her to support allies without needing to approach the frontlines, meaning the enemy should rarely get the chance to exploit her low HP and defense. In fact, Physic will eventually have a range that lets Mercedes heal allies practically on the other side of the map. Second, Mercedes will rarely ever be hampered by the low movement of magic-enabled classes since it will not impede her ability to heal. As for her offensive magic, Mercedes' black magic spell list is nothing too special. It lacks the amazing spells found on other magic-oriented units' spell lists and lacks a 3-range offensive option but will still be useful in the few situations Mercedes does see combat. Mercedes also has the personal skill Live to Serve which heals her in addition to her target everytime she casts a healing spell. While the skill sounds incredibly useful on paper, Mercedes will rarely need it as she is not going to be involved in combat very frequently due to her plethora of ranged support magic. It may be useful in maps with ballistas, but will see little use aside from such situations.
Mercedes possesses a minor Crest of Lamine which grants her a 10% chance to conserve uses of recovery magic. This crest effect is useful, especially in the early game, but the effect's low proc rate is unreliable and the crest will likely prove unnecessary upon changing to a class with White Magic Uses x2. Mercedes' crest also grants her Pavise and Aegis when she has the Rafail Gem equipped. While this sounds good on paper, Mercedes is generally ill-suited for the frontlines and will struggle to reach them with the four movement of magic-enabled classes; thus, she will likely see little use of this boon. Furthermore, obtaining the gem requires the player to recruit Caspar to unlock the paralogue, making the obtaining of the gem somewhat annoying and ultimately not worth the trouble. The true boon of having a crest is that it allows Mercedes to use all Heroes' Relics without taking damage, giving her the option to use the Thyrsus to make her offensive spells into 1-4 range spells. Mercedes also possesses a Budding Talent in Bows, which upon training grants Mercedes Waning Shot, a combat art that lowers an enemy's strength by five, consequently lowering their AS by one. The combat art itself can be helpful as its 2-3 range allows Mercedes to attack from a safer distance and presents her another option to support her allies. Furthermore, realizing the budding talent can help Mercedes achieve a B-rank in bows quicker which will allow her to use a forged Magic Bow to have an inherent magical 3-range offensive option; however, in general, bows are a poor weapon choice for Mercedes as they are heavy and for the most part deal damage based off of her low strength and achieving a B-rank in bows will distract from achieving skills like Black Magic Range +1 via weapon proficiencies.
Since Mercedes has such good white magic spells and lacks the stats to have good survivability on the frontlines, she is best staying in magic enabled classes to play a supportive role; therefore, her best class promotion line starts with Monk, followed by Priest, then Bishop, then ending with Gremory to end up with double the amount of uses of all her spells. There are some alternative options within this line. Firstly, you can choose to make Mercedes a Mage instead of a Priest if you prefer building towards obtaining Fiendish Blow over the Priest's general +5 to all white magic healing. The other alternative option is Mercedes' final class. The Bishop is still a good option for her final class as it grants her double uses of her white magic spells and increases the potency of her healing by ten points, Nosferatu excluded. Alternatively, you could enhance Mercedes' offenses by making her a Dark Knight which grants her seven movement, Black Tomefaire, and Canto so that she can move herself to safety after attacking. As a side note, the Holy Knight is not an ideal class for Mercedes as it lacks White Magic Uses x2 and any boost to her healing potency in exchange for White Tomefaire which only boosts Nosferatu. If you want Mercedes to have boosted movement and Canto, Dark Knight is simply the superior option.
Out-of-House Performance
When recruited outside of the Blue Lions, Mercedes comes with training in Reason and Faith meaning she is well on her way towards her best classes. Mercedes' recruitment requirements are fifteen magic and a C in Bows which can be lowered to six magic and a D in bows if Byleth achieves a B support with her. These requirements are very favorable as Curved Shot is an incredibly useful combat art that you should have Byleth build towards in Part I, making Mercedes convenient to recruit. Since Mercedes has such good spells, she can easily excel as a healer as soon as she is recruited and does not require much investment besides the auto-tutoring she will receive each week in Reason and Faith. Also, for Black Eagles players who plan to proceed to the Crimson Flower route, Mercedes will be the only healer available that has Fortify, making her even more valuable to recruit.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are two different variations of Mercedes available to Heroes, both based on her Three Houses Part I incarnation. The normal variation of Mercedes is one of the characters added to the game in the Omnicidal Witch update, and became available for summoning by players on August 7, 2019. A summer variation of Mercedes was made available between the period of June 21, 2021 through August 8, 2021 in a special variation as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Summer Vibrance update, the update where this variation was added to the game.

Endings
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (single ending, Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Mercedes left home and went to Garreg Mach, where she became a model cleric. She devoted the whole of her life to the service of the goddess and became well-loved by the people, who revered her for her piety and her boundless generosity toward those in need.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (single ending, Crimson Flower)
Mercedes left home and opened a small orphanage in the Faerghus region with her mother. There, she took in and raised children who had lost their families in the war, regardless of their blood or circumstances of birth. It is said that, in the town which grew around this orphanage, the children never failed to smile.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced <his/her> marriage to Mercedes shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Mercedes ensured that Fódlan paid special attention, in its rebuilding effort, to folks who had lost jobs and to children who had lost their families due to the war. The couple was said to mingle frequently among the people, working up a sweat right alongside them. They happily spent their lives ushering in a new era.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced <his/her> marriage to Mercedes shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Mercedes took on duties as a cleric and through that work ensured that the church offered special support to children who had lost their families due to the war. The couple was said to mingle frequently among the people, working up a sweat right alongside them. They happily spent their lives ushering in a new era.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Crimson Flower)
Byleth and Mercedes wed in haste, that they might better focus on their battle against those who slither in the dark. The struggle was long and arduous, but their passionate love supported them through it. When at last the fight was done, they moved to a small village in the Faerghus region and started an orphanage. There they took in and raised children who had lost their families in the war, regardless of their blood or circumstances of birth. It is said that Mercedes was never happier than when she was surrounded by smiling children, free of all worry.
Dimitri, Savior King & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
After his coronation, Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and took his friend, Mercedes, as his queen. Most were shocked by his choice, as she did not come from a distinguished noble line. Still, when the people saw her devotion to healing the damage caused by the war, they decided she was the ideal match for the one they called the Savior King. It is said that the couple led busy but happy lives, and that they never failed to express their appreciation for one another, no matter the hardship.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Mercedes traveled to Fhirdiad to pay a visit to her adoptive father. Though she introduced Ferdinand, she left out the small detail that they were engaged to be wed. Married in secret, Ferdinand and Mercedes worked together to reform the new Duke Aegir's territory, and the effort was so successful that he was called upon to work as a leader in the central government. It was a busy life for him indeed, but as he was known to say to his government colleagues, coming home to a smiling family made all the hard work worth it.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Mercedes traveled to Fhirdiad to pay a visit to her adoptive father. Though she introduced Ferdinand, she left out the small detail that they were engaged to be wed. Married in secret, Ferdinand and Mercedes worked together to reform the new Duke Aegir's territory, and the effort was so successful that Emperor Edelgard named Ferdinand her prime minister. It was a busy life for him indeed, but as he was known to say to his government colleagues, coming home to a smiling family made all the hard work worth it.
Dedue, Taciturn Devotee & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
Two years after the war, Dedue and his wife, Mercedes, opened a school in the Duscur residential district in Fhirdiad. The school educated Duscur children, who had never been given structured learning before, in reading, writing, arithmetic, and even Duscur history. Many years later, when the Duscur people reclaimed their homeland, the people who attended this school were able to resettle there and revive their old culture. Because of this, Dedue and Mercedes were forever renowned by the Duscur.
Felix, Meandering Sword & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower)
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, seeking battle as if he had a death wish, but his violent path came to an end when he reunited with Mercedes. She had begun a new life as a cleric in service to the goddess, and with her kindness and generosity, she was able to turn his life around. No one knows what became of them after that, but the tales of a swordsman who made warriors across Fódlan tremble with fear all come to an end at that point.
Felix, The Shield's Successor & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul (Azure Moon)
After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. A year later he married Mercedes, who helped complete the rebuilding effort by paying special attention to children who had lost their families during the war. When their efforts were complete, they settled into a busy life together, with Felix serving as the king's trusted retainer, and Mercedes supporting him in all things. It is said that every so often, the pair would venture out of their territory in order to visit a graveyard for fallen Imperial soldiers. There, they left flowers on a mysterious, unmarked grave, and prayed for the one who rested there.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing. Though he was famously tenacious and never lost heart, it was perhaps only due to the constant counsel of his wife, Mercedes, that he managed to overcome all obstacles. When not busy governing their territory, the couple lifted one another's spirits by baking delicious sweets for each other. The tradition was so heartwarming that it became popular for husbands and wives in that region to do the same for generations.
Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
As Margrave Gautier, Sylvain devoted his life to improving relations with the people of Sreng. Under his leadership, nobles were persuaded that Relics and Crests were not necessary as they'd previously thought. Though he went down in history as an extraordinary lord, he could not have done so without the constant support and counsel of his wife, Mercedes, whose wisdom and guidance brought prosperity to the people. The couple built a loving home life, surrounded by happy children, and when Sylvain at last passed away, he was succeeded by his oldest child, who bore no Crest.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Annette and Mercedes lived separate lives: the former as a teacher at the school of sorcery in Fhirdiad, the latter as a cleric at Garreg Mach. Though they lived apart, they exchanged letters so frequently and shared their lives with one another in such detail that it was as though they were side by side. After many decades, they resigned their respective positions and reunited at Garreg Mach. In their final years, they relocated to a modest house in the Fortress City. It is said that they were happy together to the very end.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Annette and Mercedes lived separate lives: the former as a teacher at the school of sorcery in Fhirdiad, the latter as the proprietor of an orphanage in a village in the Faerghus region. Though they lived apart, they exchanged letters so frequently and shared their lives with one another in such detail that it was as though they were side by side. After many decades, Annette decided to resign from her post and move to the village where Mercedes lived to help run the orphanage. The life they lived there was modest, but it is said that they were happy to the very end.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
After the war, Mercedes accompanied Lorenz back to his homeland. There, the young heir petitioned his father, Count Gloucester, to permit the couple to marry. Though the count initially disapproved of Mercedes's status as a commoner, he was persuaded by her virtues as a person to change his mind. In fact, he praised Lorenz for having a taste in character superior to his own. After Lorenz succeeded his father as lord of the territory, the couple finally wed. With Lorenz's stern approach to governance, and Mercedes's open mind, House Gloucester flourished under their rule.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Ignatz, Worldly Artist (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Mercedes left home for a life as a cleric at Garreg Mach. There, she took in and raised children who had lost their families in the war, regardless of the circumstances of their birth or bloodline. Some years later, she was reunited with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family that he should become a painter and traveled all through Fódlan painting beautiful landscapes. His greatest masterpiece, however, was a portrait that was entitled The Smiling Saint. It is said that the woman whose face inspired it became the love of his life, and that she spent all of her remaining days close by his side.

It is said that the woman whose face inspired it became the love of his life, and that she spent all of her remaining days close by his side.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Alois, Sun of the Knights (not available on Crimson Flower)
Mercedes left home for a life as a cleric at Garreg Mach. Alois, as Jeralt's successor, officially assumed the role of captain of the Knights of Seiros. Though the two were quite busy with their daily activities, they would often find time to get together in the evenings so Alois could hear Mercedes's ghost stories. No one can say for certain whether it was the constant exposure to spooky tales or some other cause, but from that time on, Alois's reputation became that of a totally fearless fighter. Mercedes's quiet support was widely credited for this increase in bravery. Her blessing came to be known as a guarantee of victory.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Jeritza, Bloodstained Demon
Once those who slither in the dark were finally defeated, Mercedes left home and opened a small orphanage in the Faerghus region with her mother. After many years of kind service raising children who had lost their families, she received a letter bearing familiar handwriting. Its author, a prisoner in Enbarr, expressed his sincerest well-wishes to Mercedes and her family. Still more time passed until, one day, the man who wrote the letter paid her a visit. With joyful tears in her eyes, Mercedes smiled, took Emile by the hand, and at last welcomed him home.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate/Scion of Nuvelle
After the war, Constance and Mercedes traveled together to the school of sorcery in Fhirdiad. There, they immersed themselves in magical research and, with the help of their friends and all the school's resources, made one astounding discovery after another. Their considerable achievements led to the revitalization of both House Nuvelle and House Martritz. The pair grew increasingly close over the years so that, as time wore on, they became less like friends and more like family. It is said that, years later, each began to speak of the other as if she were a dear sister.

Note
- ↑ Mercedes introduces herself as /mɛɹˈsɛdɛs/[key] in Chapter 1 and in her and Cyril's C support. However, the first syllable of her name is frequently pronounced /mɝ-/, as her nickname "Mercie" would imply, and the last syllable as /-dɛz/. Additionally, the vowels in the latter two syllables in her name are infrequently pronounced as /eɪ/ or /e/.
