“ | My only wish is to see Lady Edelgard fulfill her ambitions. All other matters pale in comparison. | ” | — Hubert, to Dorothea. |
---|
Hubert von Vestra (pronounced /'hjubɝt vɒn 'vɛstɹə/[key]; Japanese: ヒューベルト=フォン=べストラ Hubert von Vestra) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is the tactician of the Black Eagles house at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Hubert was born as the eldest son of Marquess Vestra, the head of House Vestra of the Adrestian Empire. He began serving Edelgard early in his youth and was taught to be faithfully loyal to her, which in due time made Hubert develop feelings towards Edelgard. In the Insurrection of the Seven, Hubert's father allied with Duke Aegir and spearheaded the capture of Emperor Ionius IX and his scions, forcing Lord Arundel to take Edelgard and flee to Faerghus, which made Hubert develop hatred towards his father for betraying House Vestra's legacy. Hubert then escaped the empire and tried reaching Fhirdiad where Edelgard resided, but was captured three days later. When Edelgard and Arundel eventually came back, she and her siblings were isolated and experimented upon by "those who slither in the dark", preventing Hubert from helping her. Only Edelgard survived; she swore to destroy both those who slither in the dark and the Church of Seiros, who she blamed for propagating the Crest-worship that led to the deaths of her loved ones. To this end, she took up the secret identity of the Flame Emperor and began orchestrating attacks on the Church, and Hubert was one of the only ones who knew the truth of her actions.
In 1180, Hubert and Edelgard enrolled in the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery and became members of the Black Eagles house. Throughout 1180, he studies and fights alongside the Black Eagles, all while silently preparing Edelgard's ascension to the imperial throne, disposing of the corrupt imperial nobility, his father included, and concealing his knowledge of the Flame Emperor's true identity and their collaboration with "those who slither in the dark". When Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seiros, he claims his father's title as Marquess Vestra and fights on the Empire's side, potentially abandoning Byleth should they be teaching the Black Eagles and choose to side with the Church, and achieves victory. Afterwards, he and Edelgard return to Adrestia and spend the next five years battling Faerghus and Leicester while researching "those who slither in the dark".
In non-Crimson Flower routes, Hubert fights in the Battle at Gronder on Adrestia's side, and in two optional missions in both Brigid and Arianrhod, but is forced to retreat in the end. On the Azure Moon route, Hubert communicates to Edelgard the death of her uncle once he is killed in Derdriu, and warns her of the negative consequences her trump card against the Kingdom army may have for her health and future. Hubert later defends Enbarr alongside the Adrestian army before ultimately meeting his demise. On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, once Edelgard is slain, it is revealed Hubert left a letter revealing the location of Shambhala, the headquarters of "those who slither in the dark" so the victorious army can wipe them out on his and Edelgard's behalf should both be slain in the previous struggle, as they had planned to deal with them once Adrestia had conquered all of Fódlan.
In the Crimson Flower route, Hubert sincerely thanks Byleth for choosing to side with Edelgard right before she declares war on the Church, and fights alongside them and his fellow Black Eagles in the ensuing imperial invasion of Garreg Mach Monastery. After Byleth's return, Hubert and Edelgard officially co-found the Black Eagle Strike Force. Afterwards, he explains to Byleth the empire's temporary alliance with "those who slither in the dark" before proceeding to fight alongside them and Edelgard for the rest of the war. When Arianrhod is destroyed during Adrestia's conquest of Fódlan by "those who slither in the dark" as payback for Cornelia's death, Hubert reveals they employed a "javelin of light" to commit the act, and that it is likely they have already used them in the past in order to destroy Ailell.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Hubert has the second highest magical damage output in the game, boasting a high growth in magic, good growths in Dexterity and Speed, average HP and low growths in Strength and Defense. While the weight of his spells often prevents him from doubling enemies, their high might will often let Hubert defeat enemies in one shot—or at the very least deal heavy damage if playing Maddening—throughout the majority of the game. Their shakier accuracy also means he can be prone to miss targets with high Avoid, and though this can be resolved by making Hubert master the Archer class for Hit +20, it also means he will have to spend some time in a class without the ability to cast magic. Hubert can unlock two 3-range spells with Mire Β and Death Γ at D+ and B in Reason, allowing him to snipe out enemies from afar easily and fairly early into the game. Banshee Θ, unlocked at C-rank, can provide a lot of utility by reducing the movement of upcoming enemies by five, and his strongest spell unlocked at A-rank, Dark Spikes Τ, makes him effective at removing enemy cavalry units. Hubert's personal ability, Officer Duty, grants him plus five might when using gambits, allowing the player to not strictly use an ability slot for the Authority ability. When Hubert can't make it to the front lines, he can provide buffs to other units via Rally skills, as he can get both Rally Magic and Rally Resistance quickly at D and C+ rank in Authority respectively; Hubert also has access to Rally Speed at S-rank, but it can be impractical to obtain in the long run since it requires heavy investment into Authority, which is usually reached very late into the Crimson Flower route. Likewise, while Hubert is also one of the few magic-oriented units to have access to Recover at C-rank in Faith, his weakness in that expertise can make unlocking the spell fairly difficult. Hubert's major weaknesses lie in his average HP and low Defense growths, preventing him from dealing with many enemies during enemy phase, and in the low movement of classes that can use magic. The last weakness can be patched up with the Caduceus Staff however, which grants him plus one to his magic range.
Hubert also possesses a Budding Talent for Lances. If trained he gets access to Frozen Lance, a magical lance combat art that increases in damage output based on his Dexterity. With the right lance and a high Dexterity stat, this art is capable of dealing a lot of damage, possibly even more than his most powerful spells. However, it's also an art locked at one-range, which potentially exposes Hubert to counterattacks and attacks on the enemy phase he won't be able to retaliate against. While his mediocre strength and low defense otherwise make his lance rank irrelevant—as he'll certainly deal no damage without the magical lance Arrow of Indra, which can be obtained in his paralogue during Part II—it can make the process of reclassing into a Dark Knight easier.
Taking into account Hubert's strengths and growths, his best class progression is to start as a Monk; then promote into a Dark Mage in order to duplicate his Miasma Δ uses, gain access to Heartseeker, which has good synergy with Frozen Lance and can provide support to nearby allies by lowering the avoid of adjacent enemies, and master it to gain access to Poison Strike, which can provide passive damage to monsters; and for the advanced tier, promote him into a Dark Bishop, which increases his offensive capabilities further and can remove the need of healing him once he masters the class and acquires Lifetaker. While it's not strictly necessary for Hubert to master the Mage class—as Fiendish Blow is an innate ability of Dark Bishop and cannot be stacked up—it can prove useful in the long run should Hubert become a Dark Knight in the lategame; by contrast, the Warlock class won't benefit him in any way, as the class' innate abilities, Black Tomefaire and Black Magic Uses x2, won't bolster his Dark Magic prowess; on a related note, Hubert has no way of gaining Dark Magic Uses x2 for any of his Dark Magic spells, owing to the ability being exclusive to the female-only Gremory class. The best master class for Hubert is Dark Knight, as it provides him Dark Tomefaire, Canto and more mobility, letting him stay at the pace of the rest of the army.

Personality and character
Hubert is a cold-blooded, pragmatic and distrustful yet reasonable individual willing to do whatever he deems necessary in order to ensure the success of Edelgard's goals, safety and happiness, even at the expense of his own desires. Even though Hubert always displays a sinister demeanor with those around him, he can be fairly affable with those he gets to trust, and his interactions with Bernadetta hints he frequently keeps his act because he takes delight in seeing people's reactions to it. While highly valuing unconditional loyalty, Hubert does think for himself and is more than willing to play around Edelgard's orders and even go against her back if he believes they will be a detriment for her in the long run.

Endings
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant (single ending)
Hubert devoted his life fully to the service of Edelgard. Operating in the light and the shadows alike, he disposed of countless burdens facing his emperor, using any means necessary. Though his ghastly appearance and imposing demeanor were ever feared, he paid his reputation little heed, focusing instead on his loyalty to the emperor.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Hubert, Emperor's Confidant
After a fierce battle, Byleth and Edelgard finally brought the tyranny of a godlike being to an end. Though wounded in conflict and stripped of divine power, Byleth continued to fight alongside the emperor to bring true peace. Hubert joined them in this fight, fulfilling his promise to confront those who slither in the dark head-on. In that darkness, Byleth and Hubert formed an unbreakable bond. It is said that, as a married couple, they were totally inseparable.
Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Hubert, Emperor's Confidant
As the new Adrestian emperor, Edelgard gave all she had to breathe new life into the government of Fódlan. With tireless work, great sacrifice, and her devoted servant Hubert by her side, she instituted new class reforms and helped to ensure the people's independence. Hubert was always close at hand, ready to dispose of unsavory burdens by any means necessary. In their later years, they passed the fruits of her labor on to Edelgard's successor and vanished from the public eye. Though it is said they spent the rest of their lives together, it is unlikely they ever gave voice to the true depth of their affections.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles
Hubert and Ferdinand became the left and right hands of Emperor Edelgard, competing constantly with each other to see who could be the more helpful. They were opposites—the Minister of the Imperial Household, melancholy and merciless, and the prime minister, bright and compassionate. Still, they brought out the best in each other. As the Empire became orderly and prosperous, the two came to be known as the nation's "Two Jewels," and were remembered fondly for generations to come. Some say their fame made even Emperor Edelgard jealous.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
The marriage between Hubert, Minister of the Imperial Household, and Bernadetta, leader of House Varley, was so surprising to the public that it was much talked about even outside of political circles in the capital. Bernadetta took the opportunity to survey the far reaches of the new Adrestian Empire, and in her absence, Hubert took well to the management of Varley territory. They proved to be an astonishingly good match, working together to protect Fódlan from the shadows. It is said that they showed their affection for one another by wearing matching embroidered flowers.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Dorothea, Mystical Songstress
After the war, the Mittelfrank Opera Company made a resurgence, in no small part thanks to the patronage of Emperor Edelgard's confidant, Hubert. Dorothea made a comeback as a songstress within the troupe, which traveled all over Fódlan, putting a large share of its profits toward relief efforts. The opera company was warmly welcomed by the war-weary people as a source of solace, and became even more famous than before. It was not discovered until many years later that the troupe's tour had been a covert operation, coordinated by Hubert and Dorothea to gather intelligence for the Empire.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Petra, Queen of Brigid
Shortly after the war, Brigid renegotiated its diplomatic arrangement with the Adrestian Empire, ending its service as a vassal and becoming a full ally. As part of that agreement, Petra, queen of Brigid, was wed to Hubert, Marquis Vestra. Some say that the marriage was purely political, ordered by Emperor Edelgard, while others insist that it was of their own accord. Although they led busy lives, and sometimes lived separately. Still, their shared home in the western Fódlan village of Nuvelle was filled with their many children, suggesting a loving union.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Shamir, Distant Archer
As confidant to Edelgard, Hubert disposed of every burden facing his emperor by any means necessary, and excelled at working in the shadows. Supporting him from the front lines was the former mercenary, Shamir, who commanded the emperor's elite troops. When the two married, they appeared from the outside to be little more than a lord of the Empire and his dutiful wife. In reality, their nights were filled with fierce combat against rebels, assassins, and those who slither in the dark. It is reported that one of them was known to often state that, "To find love between life and death is a gift." It is unknown which of the two actually spoke these words.

Trivia
- If paralogues are counted, Hubert is tied with the Death Knight for the most appearances as an enemy in a single main-series game, with 7; he is fought in Chapters 1, 7, 12, 17, and 21, as well as Foreign Land and Sky and The Silver Maiden on the Azure Moon route of Three Houses.
- Hubert has a personalized class sprite in the game's files depicting him in the Dark Knight class, which would have been used during Part II; it is left unused for unknown reasons.
- As an enemy, Hubert has access to the spells Agnea's Arrow, Bolting, Luna Λ, and Meteor, which he cannot learn as a playable unit. Likewise and disregarding enemy-only abilities, Hubert cannot obtain the Defiant Mag ability as the Gremory class that learns it is locked to female units.
- As revealed in one of his advice box notes, Hubert aspires to be a Pegasus Knight. However, it is not possible for him to actually class change into one, as Pegasus Knight is locked to female units.
