“ | Nohrian scum! First, you kidnap him/her, now you lie to him/her?! Corrin is MY brother/sister, not yours! | ” | — Hinoka |
---|
Hinoka (Japanese: ヒノカ Hinoka) is the eldest princess of Hoshido and the daughter of the late Sumeragi, and an older step-sister to Corrin. Like all other Hoshidan and Nohrian royalty, she possesses the power of Dragon Vein, being able to alter the terrain around oneself.
Fire Emblem Fates
Role
Pre-Decision
Hinoka first appears in chapter 4 in a village under attack by Faceless along with Sakura. Corrin, Rinkah, Kaze, and Ryoma arrive and rescue them, and Hinoka immediately recognizes Corrin as her long-lost sibling. The Hoshidans attend a celebration in the plaza at Shirasagi, but a hooded assassin appears, telekinetically steals the Ganglari from Corrin, and detonates it as a bomb, killing Mikoto. After driving back the assassin, Hinoka and her siblings march on the border to fight the opening battle with Nohr.
Birthright
Corrin chooses to stand with Hoshido, and drives back the Nohrian forces. Afterwards, Hinoka leaves to participate in the war effort. She eventually regroups with Corrin at the Wind Tribe village, where she joins Corrin's forces alongside her retainers Azama and Setsuna. Hinoka follows Corrin throughout the rest of the war with Nohr and helps them to defeat King Garon.
Conquest
Corrin chooses to stand with Nohr, leaving Hinoka despondent at the realization that all of her training to rescue them was for nothing. She and the rest of the Hoshidan forces are driven back.
Hinoka heads to Notre Sagresse to take the Rainbow Sage into Hoshidan custody along with Azama, Setsuna, Rinkah, and Kaze. Corrin defeats Hinoka's forces without taking a single life, and Hinoka is forced to retreat. Later, she and her siblings attend a banquet in Izumo, and are shocked to discover the Nohrian royalty in attendance. However, Duke Izana has been replaced with an impostor named Zola, and the banquet is a trap. Hinoka and her siblings are captured, but the Nohrian royals are unwilling to win the war in such a deceitful manner. Corrin and their siblings kill Zola and rescues the Hoshidans, and the two groups eat a tense meal together.
Hinoka makes her final stand outside the gates of Castle Shirasagi along with Azama and Setsuna, but her forces are wiped out. However, Corrin is unable to kill their sister and spares her, defying Garon's order to kill her. Corrin takes Hinoka's lance and orders her to flee into hiding, and Hinoka reluctantly complies, but begs them not to kill Ryoma. However, Iago, knowing Corrin spared Hinoka willingly, sends his forces to catch her as she escapes, thus exposing Corrin's deceit and Iago, angered that Corrin spared Hinoka and ruining his plans, attempts to kill Corrin for treason, but is turn against by Xander and the Nohrian siblings, and without Garon to protect them, they kill Hans and Garon's loyalist and Leo executes Iago, foiling his schemes to kill Corrin and the Hoshidian royals.
After Garon is killed and the war has ended, Hinoka is last seen at Xander's coronation as the new king of Nohr, where it is revealed that both she and Sakura survived the war and since both Ryoma and Takumi are dead, she is to be crowned the new queen of Hoshido and both kingdoms make peace with each other to prevent another war.
Revelation
Corrin refuses to pick a side and attacks both Hoshido and Nohr in an ill-thought out attempt to get them to stop fighting. Afterwards, Hinoka leaves to take part in the war with Nohr. Eventually, Corrin convinces Ryoma that there is a hidden mastermind behind the war, and he journeys to the Bottomless Canyon alongside Hinoka, Azama, Setsuna, and Scarlet. There, they help Corrin defeat Hans and join their forces for the rest of the campaign against Valla, eventually helping to defeat Anankos.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Hinoka is a Sky Knight that joins in either chapter 8 of Birthright or chapter 16 of Revelation. Hinoka comes in a good class, along with good growths in every area besides Magic, HP and Defense, along with a high weapon level in lances. Hinoka's main weakness in both routes is her relative frailty and middling strength base often putting her just out of reach of one rounding most enemies, as such Hinoka makes great use of forges, strength pair ups and tonics as she having a strong flyer is extremely valuable in both routes. Hinoka is very solid in her joining chapter in Birthright due to her solid bases and excellent class for a desert map, however Revelation is another story as her bases aren't nearly as good and enemies are noticeably bulkier, as such she will mostly be used as a pair up bot for her flying utility.
Hinoka comes with the skills Rallying Cry, Darting Blow and Camaraderie at base in Revelation. Rallying Cry boosts the damage of player units within two spaces of Hinoka and thanks to her high movement Hinoka makes excellent use of her personal skill, Darting Blow improves Hinoka's already excellent attacking speed, even if it can be overkill at times and Camaraderie gives Hinoka some healing utility, even if it's quite minimal. Hinoka has the choice between promoting to Falcon Knight and Kinshi Knight. Falcon Knight keeps Hinoka mostly the same and gives her access to staves. While Hinoka does have serviceable magic, she will not be using staves too much, besides the Rescue staff as it is only E rank in Fates and allows you to ferry around strong unmounted units like Ryoma. While in the Falcon Knight class Hinoka learns the skills Rally Speed and Warding Blow. Rally speed is arguably the best rally in the game and it allows the player units to reach some potentially difficult to reach doubling thresholds, while Warding blow makes Hinoka virtually untouchable against magic wielders on Player Phase, even if it does feel a bit unnecessary as Hinoka already has great resistance. Kinshi Knight on the other hand gives Hinoka access to bows, which are a decent way of giving Hinoka some better attack due to their high might, but are not recommended due to their inability to be used at 1 range, particularly troublesome on Enemy Phase. While in the Kinshi Knight classline, Hinoka learns the skills Air Superiority and Amaterasu. Air Superiority improves her performance against opposing fliers by boosting her Hit and Avoid rates and Amaterasu can combo nicely with Camaraedire and Rallying Cry to allow Hinoka to contribute even after she has ended her turn.
Hinoka is the second flyer to join you in Birthright and unlike Subaki she comes with better bases and a higher lance rank allowing her to contribute far more compared to him. As her joining map will be a desert she can move unrestricted, activate the Dragon Veins to give the players units additional movement and even be useful to give additional damage to player units with her personal skill. With the high number of route maps in Birthright Hinoka's flying utility is not as useful as it would be in some other games and she cannot handle bow users thanks to their high accuracy. Still, flying does have its uses in some maps and the unrestricted movement makes Hinoka's class a great fit for faster playthroughs. Because of her aforementioned middling strength and bulk, Hinoka's best pair up partner is a someone who is a member of the Knight or Great Knight classline as it fixes both of these issues. Hinoka's access to Rally Speed in some of the later chapters is also very valuable as it is harder to reach the doubling threshold. Hinoka can also use the Bolt Naginata decently due to her serviceable magic and low resistance of most enemies in Birthright. Overall, as long as the player gives Hinoka a bit of investment she will easily become one of the armies best combat and utility units, especially on faster playthroughs.
Unfortunately, Hinoka is not nearly as good in Revelation due to multiple factors. First is her bad bases for joining so late into the game which prevent her from contributing without stat boosting items or a promotion. Second is her mediocre availability, joining when you likely already have a strong army. Lastly, the reclassing feature allows you to make other units into flyers even if their original class is not a flyer. Still, Hinoka can at least be used a pair up partner thanks to her ability to use Dragon Veins, flight, potential staff or rally utility and personal skill, although she might have a hard time finding a spot in the crowded army of Revelation.
On the subject of reclassing, Hinoka can reclass into a Spear Fighter and its two promotions, Spear Master and Basara. Statwise, the Spear Fighter class offers higher HP, Strength, Skill and Defence at the cost of Luck and Resistance. Considering that Hinoka's base Luck and Resistance are already fairly high, the Spear Fighter class can serve to make Hinoka more balanced, both offensively and defensively. Also, since Hinoka starts off with a C rank in lances, she should have little issues offensively as a Spear Fighter. While in the Spear fighter classline she learns Seal Defense and Swap. Seal Defense is not too useful in Birthright as most enemies have poor bulk already, besides Generals, and as such is situational, however it is far more useful in Revelation due to the bulkier enemies. Swap is useful for a variety of different thing and can be useful in a wide variety of situations, even if it can often times be useless. Spear Master is a natural progression from Spear Fighter as it keeps the same growth rates and allows Hinoka to reach S rank in lances. While in said class she will learn Seal Speed and Lancefaire, Seal Speed is fairly situational outside of fighting bosses, but Lancefaire is an excellent skill that will get rid of Hinoka's strength problems. Basara gives Hinoka more bulk, magic and access to scrolls. Hinoka cannot use scrolls effectively because of her low magic and it is ultimately not worthwhile to lose access to a mount or better combat because of them. In this class Hinoka learns Rend Heaven and Quixotic. Despite what swordmasters in Conquest Lunatic might have made you think, Rend Heaven is overly situational to be used consistently, though when it does proc it's incredibly useful, Quixotic is alright in Birthright due to enemies often having few skills, but is quite risky to use in Revelation on a frail unit like Hinoka.
Overall, Hinoka has arguably the biggest difference in usefulness in the two routes of every character in Fates. While she is excellent in Brithright she is quite mediocre in Revelation making her performance quite inconsistent. Still, if you need a solid flyer in Birthright Hinoka will easily make the cut and can have some usefulness in Revelation as well.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are four different variations of Hinoka available to Heroes, all of which are tied to her storyline appearance in Fates. The normal variation of Hinoka is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch. A second variation of Hinoka, here dubbed the "Wings of Fate" variation after the name of the summoning event she debuted in for lack of a theme common to most other variant characters, was made available on April 24, 2018 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Rite of Frost update. A hot spring-themed variation of Hinoka was made available between the period of January 23, 2019 through February 23, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Hostile Springs update. A pirate-themed variation of Hinoka was made available between the period of August 5, 2021 through September 5, 2021 as part of the Perilous Seas update; this variation is a Duo Hero, teamed up with Camilla.
