“ | Honestly, I really don't care one way or another about the kingdom. I don't have the kind of direction you do. It's more like I just have a nagging desire to do SOMETHING. So I thought if I joined the Deliverance, I might figure out what that is. | ” | — Gray |

Gray (Japanese: グレイ Gray) is a Zofian villager appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden. He is from Ram and is one of the first people to accompany Alm.
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Role
He is one of the first characters recruited in the game. He does not have any story presence aside from the start of the game, where he agrees to preemptively attack Desaix before Ram became a target.[2]

Promotion stat gains
Soldier Knight Mage Archer Mercenary
- In Gaiden, promotion gains consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class' base stats. If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class' base stats, they will not receive any bonus; however, if all stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Gray reprises his role in the remake, where he is recruited automatically and has a much larger role interacting with Alm. He's willing to join Alm from the get-go, wanting to do something bigger with his life. He remains by Alm's side as his trusting friend, and frequently comments on the ongoing events, either with Alm himself, or Tobin.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gray is one of the four villagers you get in act 1. He comes at level 5, so he doesn't need any training to promote, with fairly decent bases for a villager, along with solid growths in most areas. As such Gray can work well in multiple classes.
The cavalier class boosts his speed and significantly improves his movement, but unfortunately it doesn't give him additional offense and there aren't many good lances in Act 2 of Echoes, which means that Gray will have a poor performance in act 1. Act 3 is much kinder to him as he has the ability to use the ridersbane, which is invaluable due to the large number of enemy cavalry, but unless Gray gets significant training he will fall behind both Clive and Mathilda in act 3, as well as Zeke and Mycen later on.
Mage Gray isn't a bad choice for a secondary mage alongside mage Tobin or mage Faye as most phisical units have a lacking damage output in Act 3, without using weapons such as the lightining sword. As such, mage Gray will be a useful unit in Act 1, but will slowly fall behind as it takes him longer to learn another spell aside from Fire than both Tobin and Faye and as such won't have priority for items such as the mage ring or the speed ring. Still, he can have uses dealing with knights and barons, though his low movement wil hold him back.
Gray as a soldier is probably the worst option as he has a 20% speed growth while in the soilder class line and due to his speed base of 4 he doesn't have enough speed to compete with soldier Tobin's great speed base and soldier Kliff's 50% speed growth in said class. He can use the ridersbanme effectively in act 3, but the ridersbane can be used efectively by Clive as well, who needs less investment for a similar job.
Gray eclipses all of the bases of an archer, so he gets no stat bonuses and along with that he will have a weak act 1. However, once forging becomes available Gray will have access to the killer bow, which is significant as it will give him access to the excellent Hunter's Volley combat art. Gray does still face some competition from archer Kliff who has better resistance and is thus beter at dealing with magic users and Python who doesn't require investment to quickly promote, but Gray is still a decent choice.
Mercenary is Gary's most popular class and for a good reason. Aside from boosting his speed to 10, it also makes him the best user of the lightning sword in act 1, which deals excellent damage against the majority of enemies, completely dominating act 1 alongside villager mage. Gray will slightly drop off as the game goes along, the lightning sword becomes too weak to be a good weapon and Gray will need a forged sword in order to deal with the enemies well. Still, as a dread fighter he wil have excellent movement and will be one of the best unit at dealing with enemy myrmidons and other dread fighters.
Overall, Gray is a great unit that will function well in most classes.

Personality and character
In Gaide, Gray seems to be fairly laid back, even saying "let's go beat up that Desaix or whatever first", seemingly not being entirely familiar with who Desaix is. If Tobin dies, Gray turns to alcoholism, indicating that he may not be good at handling loss. As with nearly every character in Gaiden, there is not much characterization due to limited dialogue.
Shadows of Valentia adds more depth to his personality. Apart from being easygoing, chatty, and sometimes aloof, Gray is shown to have more knowledge of the world outside the village than his friends, as he comes from a merchant family.[3] He is confident in his abilities as shown in battle.

Endings
Gaiden
If both Tobin and Clair survived
He fought with Tobin over Clair, and won her heart splendidly.
"For a man, it's not the face that matters, but the heart!" Or so he declared.
If Tobin died
Due to his grief over Tobin's death in battle, he drowns himself in alcohol every day.
When will a smile ever return to his face...?
If Clair died
Having lost the one he loved, never to meet her again, he set off on a journey by himself.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
If both Tobin and Clair survived
As a member of the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights, Gray worked diligently at restoring the continent. He applied himself equally to winning Clair's heart, and beat Tobin out in the end. As he was heard to say, "Pick the guy with the big heart, not the pretty face."
If Tobin died
Devastated by Tobin's death, Gray was nearly lost to the demon drink until Clair convinced him to clean up. After declining knighthoods in the One Kingdom, the two married and lived out quiet lives. Gray was especially fond of his son, whom he named after his friend.
If Clair died
Having lost the woman he loved, Gray surprised even himself by embracing the life of a vagabond and setting off for parts unknown. His friends spared no effort in attempting to track him down, but it was to no avail.

Fire Emblem Cipher
Gray is currently featured on three cards in Fire Emblem Cipher. These cards and other Japanese Cipher parlance denote his name as (グレイ(バレンシア) Gray (Valentia)) in order to differentiate him from Asugi, who character-wise is identically-named in Japanese; English-language fandom parlance has no need to make such a distinction.
- One of the below cards' quotes is still in raw, untranslated Japanese; it needs translation.
