Sigurd
“ | We mustn't overlook our duty as knights to protect the people. | ” | — Sigurd |
---|
Sigurd (シグルド Siglud) was the son of Duke Vylon of Chalphy, heir to the dukedom and, as a descendant of the Crusader Baldur, inheritor of its holy weapon Tyrfing. In his youth, he was educated in the Grannvale capital of Belhalla, along with Quan of Leonster and Eldigan of Nordion, and the three formed a strong bond of friendship with the promise of assisting each other at times of need; Quan later married Sigurd's younger sister, Ethlyn.
While his father and the bulk of the knights of Grannvale were away at war in Isaach, Sigurd led the remaining Chalphy knights to rescue Adean of Jungby, abducted by warriors from neighbouring Verdane, where he met his wife Deirdre. From there, appointed to the title of Holy Knight, he subjugated Verdane and Agustria, where his son Seliph was born, before being implicated in the murder of Grannvale's Prince Kurth and fleeing to Silesse.
Sigurd is the main lord character of the first generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, with Seliph succeeding him for the second generation.

Upon receiving word of the Verdane assault on Castle Jungby, Sigurd immediately rode out with Alec and Noish, tasking Arden with the defence of Chalphy and taking Oifey along as a strategist. He and his forces, backed up by the arrival of Quan, Azel and Lex, quickly subdued the Verdane occupation in Jungby, where he learned that Adean had been abducted, and from there proceeded to cross the Jun River into Verdane territory to seize Castle Evans. At Evans, finding no sign of Adean, Sigurd resolved to storm the rest of the country to find her and was visited by Filat, a messenger from Belhalla, who informed him that he had been ordained as a Holy Knight of Grandbell and tasked him with the defence of the border from Evans.
With Eldigan promising to cover Sigurd from potential aggression from Agustria to the north, Sigurd pressed on into Verdane, freeing Prince Shanan of Isaach and his guardian, Princess Ayra, from Prince Kinbois at Castle Genoa. On the way to Castle Marpha, he encountered Adean, who had been freed from captivity in the castle by Jamke; in opposition to his suggestion, she chose to remain with his forces in hopes of finding her sister. In Castle Marpha, he stepped in to stop a thug harassing Deirdre, with whom he became instantly enamoured; to his surprise, she immediately fled Marpha. The two would soon meet again in Verdane's Spirit Forest, her home, where she offered her assistance in stopping Sandima of the Loptyr Sect and the two confessed their strong mutual love; the two married some time after the battle.

Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Sigurd is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Seisen no Keifu first-generation character set. Along with Eliwood and Hector, Sigurd is one of three lord characters to not have a paid DLC version of himself available.
As with several other legacy characters in Awakening, there is a unique weapon named for Sigurd available through the Barracks or event tiles: Sigurd's Lance.

Personality and character
While fundamentally good and heroic, Sigurd also has something of a reckless streak, often getting ahead of himself and others while not thinking things through entirely. In his thorough eagerness to come to the aid of others, Sigurd's responses were typically to sortie for battle without considering the consequences of, for instance, leading an invasion of Agustria to help Raquesis.
Love growths and events
Sigurd is incapable of any love growth with any character; however, in Chapter 1, he automatically gains maximum love points with Deirdre when she is recruited.

Trivia
- Sigurd was the first lord character in the Fire Emblem series to be able to wield lances and to be a mounted unit.
- Sigurd is one of three lord characters to die during the course of a game as part of the story, one of two where they is the lord character at the time, and the only one where the death is permanent from a plot perspective (the others are Hector's death in Fuuin no Tsurugi, where he was a minor character, and Chrom's death in the opening of Awakening, which was in an alternate universe undone by Lucina's time travel).
