The Empire's Reach/Script
After escaping the monsters of Za'ha Woods, Eirika marks her next destination as Serafew. Serafew is a border town shared between Renais and Grado. However, it is currently completely under occupation by Grado, to the displeasure of many of the town's residents.[1]
The chapter opens with Joshua musing to himself about the local arena, though he is interrupted by a passing cleric. She quickly apologizes to Joshua and continues on her way, to Joshua's disappointment. Joshua decides to go to the arena to gamble some coin. Nearby, Glen of the Imperial Three approaches Saar and tells him to be on the lookout for a deserter.
Eirika and her allies are able to enter the town due to relatively low security, and encounter a mysterious man who asks about an indigo haired girl. Eirika says she has seen no such person and the man moves on. After a moment, another disturbance happens and Eirika and Seth decide to carefully investigate. They see Natasha surrounded by her pursuers. Eirika is confused by the accusations of treason directed towards a cleric. Natasha, seeing her chance, slips past the soldiers and approaches Eirika telling her she bears important news. Eirika tells Natasha to wait until the pursuing Grado soldiers are taken care of.
At the start of the battle, Joshua leaves the arena disappointed that his pocket is lighter than when he entered. One of the nearby soldiers threatens to report him to the captain, though Joshua brushes it off. If Natasha speaks to Joshua, Joshua decides to join Eirika's group to protect Natasha after losing a coinflip wager to her.
At the end of the chapter, after all enemies are defeated, Natasha tells Eirika that Emperor Vigarde and Prince Lyon plan to destroy the Sacred Stones. Natasha learned this information from her mentor before he was executed a few days prior. Seth doesn't entirely believe the story but thinks the information is too dire to ignore, Eirika agrees. If Natasha sustains mortal wounds during the battle she is still able to inform Eirika and Seth of the danger to the Sacred Stones shortly before expiring.
If Eirika's troops visited each of the houses during the chapter, a villager speaks to Eirika shortly before she leaves and gifts her with a Guiding Ring out of gratitude.

Strategy

This chapter features the first arena in the game. Arenas are not as useful in The Sacred Stones as other games, as alternate less-risky training methods, skirmishes, are available. Feel free to use it for some extra experience but stay aware of the risks.
Recruiting Joshua is less intimidating than it initially appears. He will not harm Natasha, so simply kill any nearby mobile enemies while staying away from Joshua, then simply have Natasha walk up to him. However, this is not true of the Japanese release, an alternate strategy is to unequip Seth's weapons and have him bait Joshua nearer to Natasha so that she may speak to Joshua before he can attack her.
Trivia
- Tethys and Amelia make cameo appearances in villages in this chapter.
- In the international versions of the game, Joshua is programmed so that he will not attack Natasha; however, that is not the case in the Japanese version, and he will attack Natasha if she is in his movement range.

They've singled out families from Renais for the most awful atrocities. Please, traveler, take this sword. It's an armorslayer. It'll cut through even the strongest armor. Take it and strike down that blackheart, Saar." — Villager, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
