Incursion is the seventh chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the escort of Emmeryn to Ylisse's eastern palace has gone horribly wrong, and the Shepherds are forced to defend themselves from a Plegian attack deep in their own territory. It is in this chapter Chrom takes possession of the Fire Emblem and, by extension, the gemstone already set therein.
In addition to next chapter in the storyline, completing this chapter will also unlock the third paralogue chapter.

Incursion/Script
We watch as Chrom, Lissa, Frederick, Robin, and a hierarch arrive at a spot in a mountainous area of Ylisse en route to the eastern palace mentioned at the end of the previous chapter. Lissa complains about her feet, with blisters the size of eggs. Chrom tells Lissa it's not so bad, just a healthly little stroll, then asks Robin how he/she is holding up. Robin reveals his/her legs feel like pudding, and says he/she is astounded by Chrom's endurance. Chrom jokingly asks if he should carry Robin; Lissa says Chrom can carry her, and says she's serious about it. The hierarch appears to be troubled, as he keeps glancing at the peaks; the hierarch reveals he's just nervous in these ghastly times. Robin asks Chrom who the hierarch is; Chrom reveals him to have been a friend of House Ylisse for many years, and that he guided Emmeryn during the early years of her rule. Robin says he/she can't put his/her finger on something, but he/she has a feeling--as if on cue, Plegian bandits arrive on the scene. One of the bandits reveals it's time for Chrom to die; Chrom wonders how Plegian soldiers knew they were in this area, and asks everyone to prepare for battle. Battle preparations take place at this point.
Once battle preparations finish, the leader of this group of bandits, Vasto, breathes the mountain air and tells his band that the winds of fortune are blowing their way. The hierarch walks up to one of the bandits and says that he is the man Gangrel told him about and asks if Vasto received orders to take him into their protection. Vasto says he has orders to protect a man--but that he sees no man in the area, only a pig, a rasher of traitorous bacon that sold out his sovereign. Vasto then asks the hierarch about what the Plegians do to "little piggies"; the hierarch answers that they let him go free, after which Vasto asks is the hierarch is now a chicken, and that they have a whole barnyard in their midst. Vasto says it doesn't matter what the hierarch is, that the axe will fall just the same. The hierarch screams as he is killed by the bandit standing next to him. Vasto reveals it is time for the main event, and that by the moon's end, they'll be building statues of him in the capital. Vasto then asks the Ylisseans to hand over Emmeryn and the Fire Emblem in order to spare themselves a gory end; Chrom asks Phila to take Emmeryn to the rear of the column, his group will fend off the bandits. The battle begins at this point.
After two full turns of combat, a pegasus knight, whose name is revealed to be Cordelia, arrives on the scene, out of breath and seeing that Plegians are in the area. Cordelia warns Chrom and Phila to beware of enemy reinforcements coming from the rear, that they'll be upon this area soon. Phila notices Cordelia's arrival, and Robin asks Phila who Cordelia is. Phila reveals that Cordelia is one of her knights, young yet gifted; she then reveals that Cordelia was stationed on the border and asks why she's here, wondering what this turn of events could mean. The player can control Cordelia at this point. The reinforcements Cordelia talked about arrive after the end of the fifth full turn of combat, should Vasto not have already been defeated before then.
As Vasto is defeated, he states that killing him will not change anything--even now, his fellow Plegians are storming across the border into Ylisse, and tells Emmeryn to run, to flee as the Plegians slaughter her subjects and to let their faith in her bleed away. Once Vasto is defeated, Chrom notices the Plegians are gone from the area; Cordelia asks Chrom to run from the area as fast as he can--more Plegians are coming, not even half a day's march behind. Phila asks Cordelia what she is doing in this area, and asks if the border remains secure; Cordelia says she would tell Phila what she wants to here, but to do so would be giving her false information, that Gangrel himself led his might against Cordelia's squadron. The end was upon them when Cordelia's underlings begged her to fly and warn Emmeryn, and says she should have stayed and she can still hear the screams; Phila asks Cordelia to calm down, that she did her duty--Cordelia's underlings prized her youth, that Cordelia has many years yet to keep her squadron's legacy alive. Cordelia states she abandoned her squadron and that she's weak, that their legacy deserves better; Phila reveals that, at times, fleeing takes the most courage, and Cordelia's squadron knew that, and asks Cordelia pull herself together, to let the faith of her squadron give her strength. Cordelia asks Phila how she can go on the way she is now, that her squadron was her family, before starting to cry; Chrom insults the Plegians, and Emmeryn states that she has to return to the capital. Phila begs Emmeryn to reconsider; Emmeryn states she should have never left, and if she's away when news of the events come to light, the people could panic and riot, with more Ylisseans potentially needlessly dying. Emmeryn entrusts the Fire Emblem to Chrom.
The scene shifts to a view of the Fire Emblem, which Chrom asks about. Emmern asks Chrom to take it to Ferox and safety. Chrom states he doesn't want to leave Emmeryn; Emmeryn states that no part of House Ylisse matters more than the Fire Emblem, that it possesses tremendous power, yet too much blood has already been shed over it. Emmeryn hopes the Fire Emblem finds a better guardian in Chrom than it did in her. Chrom asks Emmeryn to reconsider, and not to talk in the fashion she just did, sounding like she's ready to give up; Emmeryn states she's not giving up, that she's giving what she can. Chrom again asks Emmeryn to reconsider, stating that what's going on is madness; Lissa asks Emmeryn to go back with her.
The scene shifts back to the mountains, where Emmeryn tells Lissa to stay with Chrom, to which Lissa states isn't fair--Lissa knows the Ylissean people need Emmeryn, but Chrom and Lissa also need her. Emmeryn asks Lissa to dry her tears, that this is not goodbye; Phila states that the pegasus knights will escort Emmeryn back to Ylisstol, to which Emmeryn thanks her. Frederick reveals he'll keep Chrom and Lissa safe, to which Emmeryn already knows and thanks him, with Frederick revealing it to be an honor. Phila tells Cordelia to stay with Chrom; Cordelia tries to protest, but Phila knows Cordelia's heart is heavy, yet she knows the best place for Cordelia right now is with the Shepherds. Cordelia asks her squadron to give her strength, then tells Phila she'll do as she commands and will pray for her safety. Emmeryn asks Phila to come with her, that they must go; Chrom asks them not to go, that the situation is absurd. Emmeryn tries to stop Chrom, but Chrom states that Emmeryn walking to her own death will not bring peace to anyone, asking her to be selfish for once in her life. Emmeryn reveals that Chrom and Lissa are everything to her; nobody can see what the peace Emmeryn seeks is for, and that she has to go, apologizing in the process. Emmeryn asks the family embrace in Ylisstol when the Shepherds return with Feroxi reinforcements, knowing Chrom will make it back. Chrom states that Emmeryn's plan is terrible, but Emmeryn states that the blood of the first exalt flows strong in them; she believes with her heart that they will both keep Ylisse safe, before wishing Chrom and Lissa safe journeys. Chrom cries out for Emmeryn. At this point, the player may save their game.
The scene shifts to the Arena Ferox, where Chrom, Lissa, Robin, and Sumia are gathered. Lissa asks if Emmeryn will be safe in the castle, that Phila and the others will protect her, with Flavia assembling her best troops as they speak; she is confident that they will return home in time. Chrom remains silent, and Lissa begs him to answer; Chrom reveals he wasn't listening, and asks Lissa to repeat what she said, with Lissa telling Chrom to never mind, to let her know when Chrom gets out of his own head. Chrom again falls silent; Sumia asks that he snap out of it, then proceeds to hit Chrom. Chrom, feeling the pain, asks Sumia why she hit him; Sumia asks if she did it wrong, that Phila said that a good slap might break somebody out of doldrums. Lissa tells Sumia that a slap is done with an open palm, and that Sumia just punched Chrom in the face. Sumia asks if it's the thought that counts; Chrom says that Sumia's punch seriously hurt. Flavia asks Chrom what is wrong, that sometimes love hurts, that he's lucky to have strong women like those he's got, and not just dainty flowers. Flavia reveals that she has good news; the Feroxi army has finally mobilized, every last man itching to fight, and states that she's looking forward to savoring a skirmish or two herself. Chrom asks Flavia if she's coming along; Flavia says that a khan must have her fun, and she's even bringing her "insignificant other". Robin asks just who Flavia is referring to; Flavia says she's referring to Basilio--an oaf not good for much, but who might stop a few stray arrows.
The scene shifts into Castle Ferox, where Basilio stands in wait as Chrom, Lissa, Robin, and Flavia arrive on the scene. Basilio tells Chrom he's been looking for him everywhere. Chrom asks if something's wrong; Basilio reveals his scouts have reported back with dark news--Ylisstol has fallen. Chrom is shocked at this revelation; Basilio reveals the Plegians captured Emmeryn and retreated back across their lines, with Gangrel declaring Emmeryn is to be publicly executed within the moon. Chrom is again shocked at this revelation, with Lissa joining in this time; Lissa faints, with Robin catching her and Flavia revealing Gangrel isn't even trying to be subtle anymore. Robin agrees with Flavia, that it's an obvious trap; Basilio reveals that Gangrel knew the Feroxi scouts would relay the information back, and declares it a provocation, a hot brand to the buttocks; he states that they should consider their options before carelessly jumping into any battle; Chrom cuts him off and calls for the Shepherds to march to Plegia; Basilio reveals that to be one option, but says enough royalty has been waltzing into traps for one war already. Chrom cares not if it's a trap--Gangrel plans to kill Emmeryn. Flavia asks Chrom to stop and breathe for a moment; nobody's suggesting not to act, it's being suggested that they act wisely--guts and wits need to be equal in number if Emmeryn is to be saved. Robin states the khans are right, and promises Chrom he'll think of something. Chrom tells Robin that he'll leave formulating strategy up to him/her; Flavia ask Robin if he/she is up to the task, that it won't be easy--he/she holds Emmeryn's life in one hand, everybody else's lives in the other. Robin states it's a responsibility not to take lightly, but says he/she is equal to the challenge. Flavia reveals Robin has stones at least, with Basilio adding that Robin doesn't hesitate or mince words, calling Robin either a genius or a fool, and that they'll find out once they march. Basilo ask the Ylisseans to hold on to their tassels, they have an exalt to save.
