Corrin making the choice that will determine the ending in Fates.

The concept of multiple endings is a recurring element in the Fire Emblem series but has multiple different meanings depending on the game.

Types of endings

Character endings

Eirika's and Ephraim's paired ending.

The existence of character epilogues at the end of the game has been in every Fire Emblem game to date. However, multiple possible character endings was introduced in Gaiden. These different epilogues depend on whether other characters are alive or dead. This system has only returned in the game's remake, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

A new system was introduced with the Fire Emblem games for Game Boy Advance where 2 characters with an "A" ranked support will have a unique character ending during the ending slideshow known as a "paired ending". Not all A supports will lead to a paired ending however and doing an A support for pairings with no unique ending will just lead to the default endings for the characters in question.

In Awakening and Fates, the system was similar to that of the GBA character ending system except for the fact that the 2 units need to develop an S ranked support instead of an A support. The newly introduced A+ supports from Fates will not trigger a paired ending. Paired endings can also be potentially different in Fates and Three Houses depending on the story route the player chooses.

Narrative branches

Some games in the series have multiple possible conclusions to the main storyline. The first game in the series to have a feature like this was Mystery of the Emblem. How these different endings can be achieved depend on the game in question, but include whether or not the player has pursued optional content such as a sidequest, having certain characters dead or alive, or alternate routes that never reconverge and lead to different outcomes.

At the end of Chapter 20, the missing clerics Lena, Maria, Elice and Nyna will appear and greet Marth and his army. The game ends there, unless the player has restored the Binding Shield, which requires obtaining all five orbs: the Lightsphere, the Darksphere, the Geosphere, the Lifesphere and the Starsphere (the latter of which requires all twelve Star Shards to obtain). If the player has restored the Binding Shield, it will banish the illusion, revealing the clerics to be Gharnef himself, accompanied by three Dark Mages. Gharnef angrily declares that he will attempt to resurrect Medeus immediately. Gotoh then appears and instructs Marth to go to the Dragon’s Table and stop him, granting the player access to the final two chapters. In the final chapters, Marth and his army storm the Dragon’s Table, save the clerics, and defeat Medeus.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

In Shadow Dragon's standard ending, Nyna asks Marth to muster up the courage to ask Caeda to come to Altea with him after killing Medeus in the War of Shadows. However, if Caeda was killed at any point in the game, the ending will instead depict Marth grieving the deaths of the people he cared about. Nyna tries to comfort him, saying that they are cursed due to their bloodlines and perhaps this was always meant to happen.

At the end of the Final Chapter, the player is prompted to choose between Chrom or Robin to deal the killing blow to Grima, with Naga saying that only Robin could kill him permanently as only someone with the same blood as him could bypass his immortality. She also warned that should Robin kill Grima, they would also die in the process.

If the player chooses Robin, Chrom and the rest of the party will lament on their sacrifice. After the credits, an additional cutscene will play similar to the one that play during the Prologue albeit with the Grima's mark missing from Robin's hand.

If the player chooses Chrom, the party will celebrate their victory. Robin will wonder if they made the right choice, but Chrom along with their spouse and children will comfort them, saying that they did.

Fire Emblem Fates

Fire Emblem Fates features 3 endings depending on the path chosen by Corrin in the sixth chapter of the game. The options presented include siding with the kingdom of Hoshido and fighting with them in the war against Nohr (Birthright), doing the opposite and joining Corrin's Nohrian siblings (Conquest), or refusing to choose a side and trying to find peace between the 2 kingdoms (Revelation).

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

During the first chapter of the game, Byleth is given a choice to lead one of the 3 Houses of Garreg Mach Monastery's Officers Academy. Choosing any one of the houses will cause the story to take a drastic turn starting in Chapter 12 leading to 3 standard endings. However if Byleth joins the Black Eagles, obtains a C+ support with Edelgard, and sees an optional scene after talking to her during Chapter 11, a fourth hidden route can be chosen counting up to 4 endings to the game in whole.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

There are three routes in the game: Scarlet Blaze, Azure Gleam, and Golden Wildfire.
