Mad King Gangrel is the eleventh chapter in FE13. This chapter deals with the Shepherds' epic battle against Gangrel, a battle that ends the first major arc of the game. A two-year timeskip follows when the plot is once again set into motion, this time against a new country and a new antagonist.
Mad King Gangrel (Japanese: 闇愚王ギャンレル Dark and Foolish King Gangrel) is the eleventh chapter in FE13. This chapter deals with the Shepherds' battle against Gangrel, which concludes the first major arc of the game. A two-year timeskip follows when the plot is once again set into motion, this time against a new country and a new antagonist.

Chrom must be married by the end of this chapter. If he is not already married by the time the main battle of this chapter begins, an algorithm will determine his wife during the chapter's aftermath. This algorithm can be manipulated, and in fact must be manipulated if the player wishes Chrom to marry Olivia.
Chrom must be married by the end of this chapter. If he has not already unlocked an S support by the conclusion of this chapter, an algorithm will determine his wife during the chapter's aftermath. This algorithm can be manipulated, and in fact must be manipulated if the player wishes Chrom to marry Olivia.

Aversa informs Gangrel that the Shepherds are taking the field, and the two converse. A Plegian soldier enters and informs the two that Plegian troops are laying down their weapons and deserting en masse. Frederick reports to Chrom that the Plegian army is in disarray. Chrom concludes that they were inspired by Emmeryn, and swears to defeat Gangrel and return the land to peace.
Aversa informs Gangrel that the Shepherds are taking the field, and both parties' subordinates report that the Plegian army is surrendering en masse in honor of Emmeryn's sacrifice; only a scant few hardliners remain by Gangrel's side. Chrom confronts Gangrel and defeats him in a final battle, bringing an end to the war between Ylisse and Plegia. Flavia reassures Chrom that as the war's instigator and loser, reparations will fall to Plegia. If Chrom has not attained an S-support with any of his eligible marriage candidates, he automatically proposes to the candidate with the highest support rank. Chrom takes the Ylissean throne, forswearing the title of exalt out of respect for Emmeryn, and the nation spends the next two years rebuilding.

Before battle begins, Gangrel taunts Chrom over his sister's death and compares Chrom to himself. Chrom, confident with the assistance of his friends, swears to defeat Gangrel here and now. Gangrel continues to taunt Chrom and the Shepherds through the battle until his defeat, upon which he tells Chrom that he, as every man, lives and dies alone.

Upon Gangrel's defeat, the Plegian army surrenders and the fighting stops. Chrom, Flavia, and Basilio convene and Chrom thanks the two for Ferox's assistance. If Chrom is unmarried, he will propose to one of Sumia, Sully, Maribelle or Robin* if they are unmarried based on whom he has the highest support with, granted they have at least one point.
:Note: If Olivia fulfills the requirements to marry Chrom, they will automatically marry; if Chrom has no available options, he will marry an unnamed maiden. In either case, no scene will play.

Over the course of two years, Chrom leads the reconstruction of Ylisse. While leading the country, he maintained the title of prince, and holds his wedding.

Two years after Gangrel's defeat, at Ylisstol, a messenger from Flavia arrives for Chrom, bearing news of an invasion from the west by Valm. Flavia wishes to meet Chrom in Ferox, to which he agrees. Before departing for Ferox, Chrom meets with his wife, who holds their newborn baby, Lucina. If Chrom married the maiden, she will reluctantly accept that Chrom must leave for Ferox. Otherwise, Chrom's wife will object to being left in Ylisse, stating that Lucina could be left with a wet nurse while they are in Ferox, to which Chrom reluctantly agrees; if Chrom married Olivia, the two will reminisce about Chrom's proposal before departing.

In Castle Ferox, Flavia greets Chrom and informs him that Valmese warships have set sail for Ylisse. Basilio arrives with Virion, who introduces himself as the Duke of Rosanne, and his assistant Cherche. Cherce reveals Virion's intention to recruit allies against the emerging empire two years ago, as well as recounts Valm's quick growth from small kingdom to continent-spanning empire under its emperor, Walhart. Cherche states that Walhart now seeks to conquer Ylisse, and that their ships will land in a matter of days. The Shepherds prepare to fight the Valmese at their landing, readying themselves for strong cavalry under Virion's advice.

At the end of this chapter, if Chrom is not already married, he will be forced to marry the eligible bachelorette with the most support points. Ties are resolved in the order Sumia > Sully > Maribelle > Female Robin > Olivia. In order for him to marry Olivia, he must not have a C-support (or higher) with a yet unmarried spouse. In order to do this, Olivia will need to dance for Chrom a good couple of turns before finishing the chapter. Having the two pair up and Chrom engage in several battles also works. If all of Chrom's marriage candidates are married, dead, or do not have any support points with him, he will marry a generic village maiden.
Gangrel and the enemies surrounding him (the two Fighters, two Mages, and two Mercenaries) will not move until one of the player's units enters their attack range. Should one unit enter any of the units' attack range, all of the aforementioned enemies including Gangrel will begin to close in on the player's units.

Your immediate concern is carving a path southwest to intercept the enemy Thief before he can make off with your Large Bullion. If you want to battle all of the enemies and maximize experience gain, avoid him until the end of the battle. Also beware that this is the first map to have generic promoted enemies. On Lunatic+, only bring Anna to loot the eastern treasure chest and Cordelia and Sumia to act as troop transports for Anna and Olivia. Your ultimate goal is to reach the southwest mountains, where the enemies can only approach you one space at a time and you can pick them off from safety. Once the main enemy force has been wiped out and only Gangrel and his cronies remain, use Robin to lure them all west and make room for Anna to dart in and nab the treasure.

— Chrom, should he face Gangrel

Mad King Gangrel (Japanese: 闇愚王ギャンレル Dark and Foolish King Gangrel) is the eleventh chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. This chapter deals with the Shepherds' battle against Gangrel, which concludes the first major arc of the game. A two-year timeskip follows when the plot is once again set into motion, this time against a new country and a new antagonist.

Chrom must be married by the end of this chapter. If he has not already unlocked an S support by the conclusion of this chapter, an algorithm will determine his wife during the chapter's aftermath. This algorithm can be manipulated, and in fact must be manipulated if the player wishes Chrom to marry Olivia.

Plot

Main article: Mad King Gangrel/Script

Summary

Gangrel is defeated. Two years later, Chrom has married and sired a daughter, Lucina. Upon learning the Valmese Empire will invade, Chrom departs for Ferox.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Your immediate concern is carving a path southwest to intercept the enemy Thief before he can make off with your Large Bullion.
