Khadein (Japanese: カダイン Khadein) is a desert city in the north-western part of the continent of Archanea, bordering Altea to the south, Gra to the south-east and Aurelis to the east. This country is renowned for its skilled mages, notably Gotoh the White Sage and his two best pupils Gharnef and Miloah. It is home to the Khadein College Arcane (Japanese: カダイン魔道学院 Khadein Academy of Magic).
History
Khadein was founded by Gotoh the White Sage, originally a member of the Divine Dragon clan. Eventually, he took some students as his personal pupils; Gharnef and Miloah who were among the best under his teachings. Despite his considerable talents, Gotoh grew wary of Gharnef's wrathful and compassion-less nature, and instead chose to appoint Miloah as his heir. Gharnef was outraged and overcome by jealousy on hearing this decision, and as an act of vengeance he stole the Darksphere from Gotoh's safe-keeping and fled Khadein.[1]
Soon after the War of Shadows began, Gharnef engaged Miloah in a battle and murdered him, seizing control of Khadein.[2] Gharnef's leadership dragged Khadein into the thick of the war, putting its magical prowess to brutal use, while Gharnef himself effortlessly suppressed countless attempts to stage coups against him.[3]
In Chapter 15, Marth and the Archanean League approached Khadein and fought against the mages under Gharnef's rule and Dragoons forces in the desert nearby the city.
By the time the war ended, Gharnef's rule had caused immense damage to the city and wiped out all of its other ruling pontifices. Wendell became its Archmage and started rebuilding the city.[4] Soon after that, Gotoh asked Wendell to fulfill a request on his behalf: collecting the twelve Astral Shards in order to rebuilt the Starsphere broken during the creation of the Starlight tome in the War of Shadows. As Wendell must left the city to complete his mission, he entrusted Merric and Arlen with the safekeeping of Khadein.
After Wendell's departure, Arlen chose to ally himself and his followers with the Kingdom of Archanea, resulting in them fighting the Altean forces who reaches the city of Khadein in order to flee the Archanean army. When Marth's army was breaking into the School of Khadein, Arlen's disdain for Merric exploded, calling him a traitor. Wendell eventually reaches Arlen and talks to him, revealing that the reason Merric inherited Excalibur was Arlen's lack of compassion, comparing his actions as the same as Gharnef's ones toward Gotoh and Miloah.[1] Arlen soon realizes this for himself and apologizes, with forgiveness granted from Wendell. Khadein's troops stopped fighting the Altean army while Arlen and Merric joined Marth's forces for the remainder of the War of Heroes.

Trivia
- The games provide contradicting information on when exactly Khadein was founded. The opening narration to Chapter 9 of Book II of Mystery of the Emblem says Khadein was founded centuries ago by a mysterious sage, speculated in universe to be Gotoh, who later left in disgust when humans used magic for war. However, Xane says Gotoh founded Khadein after his interactions with Anri, less than a century prior. This is backed up by the timeline provided in Mystery of the Emblem which places Khadein's founding at 550, fifty years prior to the War of Shadows.

Arlen: ... Compassion...?
Wendell: I had decided that you were to be my successor when the time came. To think you would harbor a grudge towards me... Does that not make you the same as Gharnef?
Arlen: The same as Gharnef...? Teacher! What are you saying?
Wendell: Arlen, listen to me... Gharnef, along with Pontifex Miloah, were Lord Gotoh's best pupils. But Lord Gotoh saw Gharnef's weakness, and so he left Khadein and the Aura tome to Pontifex Miloah. Gharnef, overcome by jealousy, stole the Darksphere from Lord Gotoh, and created the Imhullu tome. As a result... His heart was trapped within the Darksphere for all eternity. Wrath and envy led him to ruin. Do you understand now, Arlen...?" — Wendell and Arlen, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "Nyna: Marth, have you ever heard of Pontifex Miloah?
