Gangrel, Aversa, and a Plegian captain have gathered inside Plegia Castle. Aversa asks the captain if she correctly understands his report: it has not been confirmed that the Ylissean party possess the Fire Emblem, and it has not been confirmed that Chrom is even among the Ylissean party. The captain confirms, revealing that the air was thick with sand, making even their numbers difficult to ascertain. Aversa ask the captain to think what would have happened had he gotten closer, and promises to show him. As the camera swings toward the ceiling, Aversa moves toward the captain, and she deals a fatal blow to the captain; the captain tries to apologize as he dies, the camera back at normal angle as he falls. Aversa states she accepts the captain's apology; Gangrel asks Aversa to not kill all the soldiers, as they'll need a few for the welcoming party, as the Ylisseans will be arriving soon—presumably with Chrom and the Fire Emblem with them, Gangrel revealing Chrom would never put good sense before Emmeryn. Aversa asks what happens when the Ylisseans arrive, to which Gangrel reveals will be a massacre worthy of Chrom and Emmeryn's father.
Gangrel and Aversa plot to slaughter the incoming Ylissean vanguard, Chrom, Robin, Basilio, and Flavia finalize their plan to rescue Emmeryn, and Validar gloats to Grima about how events are returning to their destined course. The day of Emmeryn's execution comes, and the Shepherds arrive and attack the Plegian forces. The Shepherds clear a path to Emmeryn so that Phila and her squad of pegasus knights can extract her, but Aversa summons a horde of Risen archers who wipe out Phila and her troops. With the Shepherds cornered, Gangrel again demands they surrender the Fire Emblem; when Chrom agrees to hand it over, Emmeryn begs the Plegian people to turn away from the path of war and voluntarily casts herself off the ledge. A distraught and enraged Chrom swears to kill Gangrel, but Basilio and Flavia force him to retreat. Marth, witnessing these events, laments that she arrived too late and Emmeryn's death sets the world back on course to a bleak future.

We shift to where the Shepherds are camped, with Chrom, Basilio, Flavia, and Robin present on the scene. A spy enters the area, and reveals that Emmeryn is to be executed at Plegia Castle the following day, having heard it from Gangrel's own lips. Basilio reveals it's now or never; Chrom tells Robin he/she is right, things are going exactly as predicted. Robin states thing have gone well so far, but the following day will be the true test; Flavia tells Robin to show some confidence, it's his/her brilliant thinking that's gotten them this far. The plan may be risky, but only as much as called for. Chrom tells Robin that they'll find a way to see the rescue through; by this time the following day, they'll be swapping stories with Emmeryn on the way home, to which Robin hopes he's right.

In an unknown space (possibly the same one from chapter 6), Validar tells Grima the details about Emmeryn's planned execution, and reveals that events will soon be back on course. A short silence represents Grima's response; Validar says he should have never doubted the truth of Grima's words, that the yoke of destiny cannot be cast off. Even as the Shepherds resist, they write Grima's future with every step. Another short silence represents Grima's response.

The morning of the execution, Robin wakes up with Lissa beside him/her, screaming. Lissa asks Robin what's wrong, if he/she had a nightmare; Robin states it must have been, then asks Lissa what brings her here, if there's something she needs. Lissa tells Robin that Frederick says it's time to march, and the plan cannot start without the master tactician.

We cut to a stone plank, apparently the exact site of the execution, where Emmeryn and a Plegian soldier are situated. Gangrel emerges onto the scene in the area below and welcomes the warriors of Plegia in attendance, where their anticipation electrifies the air; Gangrel tells the people that they all remember the crimes of Ylisse, and asks if the people would have their "witch-queen" answer for them—right there, that day, that moment. Gangrel answers for the people, then reveals that they will have justice, then asks the executioner to do the deed. Robin calls out to Flavia, who reveals she has him; a throwing axe is seen headed toward, and eventually hitting, the executioner, who falls off the plank. Robin asks the Shepherds to move at once. Preparations take place at this point, at which time it is also revealed that Aversa is also on the scene during the preceding time period.

Once preparations are complete, Chrom asks that the soldiers should be taken out first, they'll deal with Gangrel later; Gangrel asks if they will, and that he's been expecting Chrom. Gangrel asks that his men kill Chrom, Emmeryn, Chrom's troops, Chrom's friends, and anyone else they find; in short, kill them all. Gangrel and Aversa leave the scene; the battle begins at this point.

After the player takes their first turn, one of the dark mages within the Plegian ranks, Tharja states that she's to either kill or die simply because Gangrel commands it, and asks herself what she cares about the Ylisseans. She's been given no reason to fight, only orders—what's the point of fighting? Tharja also reveals she's always been quite good about choosing who to hate on her own. After the enemy takes their first turn, the war monk Libra catches wind of the goings on involving Emmeryn, and asks the gods speed him to her side. After two full turns of combat, the commander of this group of Plegian fighters, Campari, asks where the wyvern brigade is, asking them to hurry and close off the Ylissean escape.

If Chrom speaks to Libra, he asks who he is and why he fights alone. Libra recognizes Chrom; when Chrom asks if Libra knows him, Libra reveals that all clergy know Chrom, thanking the gods for uniting them. Libra attempts to pray, but Chrom cuts him off saying it's not time for prayer, it's time for action. Libra reveals Chrom's right—he hurried to the area as soon as word came of Emmeryn's execution; Chrom asks if Libra had any companions, to which Libra confirms yet lost along the way and was even starting to doubt the purpose of his struggle. Libra asks if he and his axe can serve Chrom and his party; Chrom reveals that Libra's goal is clear, and would be honored to be joined by such a formidable "woman of the cloth". Libra corrects Chrom, saying he's a man of the cloth; Chrom appears surprised to find out Libra is a man. Libra explains that women are clerics, while he is a priest—technically a war monk if one cares to split hairs. Chrom apologizes for his misunderstanding, revealing he finds the situation awkward; Libra forgives Chrom, he realized his mistake quickly enough, the situation could have become much more awkward. The player can now control Libra at this point.

If Chrom speaks to Tharja, he asks if she is with the Plegians, that she seems relucant to fight. Tharja states death comes for everybody eventually; why invite it early, fighting for a cause she doesn't believe in? Chrom asks if he should take Tharja's response as a no; Tharja says she's keeping her options open—long live the king and all, but she'd like to keep living as well. Tharja reveals that she has a bit of a rebellious streak—a dark side. Chrom asks if Tharja would rebel now and fight for his cause; Tharja appears surprised that Chrom would trust her, and asks him what would it be if it were a ploy to plunge a dagger into his back. Chrom reveals that Emmeryn would probably trust Tharja, and he's tring to learn from Emmeryn—and he already needs to watch his back whether Tharja's with them or not. Tharja sees the exchange as odd—whenever she brings up the backstabbing bit, the discussion usually ends, then tells Chrom to consider her his new ally—for now. The player can now control Tharja at this point.

Once the battle ends, Chrom tells Robin that the Plegian wyvern riders have fallen, that the skies are clear, and he's giving the signal. Phila and two other pegasus knights arrive on the scene, with Emmeryn glad to see Phila safe, but asks how Phila got there; Phila reveals Basilio's men freed her, and that they must hurry. Phila confronts Gangrel, who is surprised to see pegasus knights in the area; Gangrel then accuses Robin of not playing fair, with Aversa laughing and also sharing Gangrel's feelings about Robin. Seven archers are teleported onto the scene, with Robin noting that these archers are Risen and telling Chrom that there are Risen everywhere, with Chrom noting the disadvantage of timing; Gangrel asks if an army of living corpses just appeared out of the blue, that the heavens smile upon Gangrel that day. One of the archers proceeds to kill Phila, with Phila's dying words asking how Risen got into the area and asking Emmeryn to forgive her. Emmeryn is shocked at what happened to Phila, while Gangrel is overjoyed at Phila's death and asks the people to watch as they fall one by one; two other Risen archers proceed to kill Phila's companions. Robin appears disgusted at the goings-on, with Chrom exclaiming that they have lost; Gangrel reveals that what's going on is a reversal of fortunes, then asks the Shepherds to grovel before him and beg for their worthless lives. Chrom states he'd give up his life before he'd beg for it from Gangrel; Gangrel notes it as a good line and calls it a fitting epitaph for Chrom's tombstone. Gangrel reveals it's not just Chrom's life on the line—Emmeryn is still on the block, and Gangrel has a dozen bows trained on her waiting for one word from him. Chrom asks Emmeryn to hold on and tries to say he's coming, but Gangrel states that if Chrom so much as twitches, the arrows fly. Chrom states he'll kill Gangrel; Gangrel dares him to try, telling him he'd be responsible for Emmeryn's bloody demise, then asks of the rest of the Shepherds if they want the honor of killing Emmeryn. When nobody replies, Gangrel reveals that the Shepherds aren't so headstrong anymore, that they are pathetic. Chrom insults Gangrel, but Gangrel reveals that nobody needs to die that day—not Chrom, not Emmeryn, not any of the Shepherds—all Chrom has to do is lay down his sword and give Gangrel the Fire Emblem. Chrom, faced with a tough decision, is told by Robin that he can't trust Gangrel; Chrom is aware of this, that he's not an idiot, yet if he just says no, Emmeryn dies. Chrom is faced with a question with no right answer that he must choose—his sister or his duty. The player is given a choice at this point asking whether or not to sacrifice Emmeryn.

If the player chooses to sacrifice Emmeryn, Robin tells Chrom that, even though it's hard to admit, it's the only choice—compared to the lives of thousands, any one person is—Chrom cuts him/her off and asking he/she to not complete his/her sentence. Gangrel appears overjoyed at the fact that Chrom would let Emmeryn die over a "family trinket"—eager to hear what the Ylisseans have to say about the matter, and that Ylisse would collapse before Chrom could even begin his rule. Chrom says they'll see when the time comes, but first he'll see Gangrel dead.

If the player chooses not to sacrifice Emmeryn, Robin tells Chrom not to give up, that there has to be a way. Chrom says if there is a way, he doesn't see it, then pleads to the gods. Gangrel says he's going to count to three—asking the Shepherds to throw down their weapons or Emmeryn becomes the world's largest quiver. Right as Gangrel is about to complete the countdown, Chrom asks Gangrel to hold, that he wins and is about to ask everyone to lay down their weapons.

Regardless of the player's decision, the split paths come together as Emmeryn cries out for everybody to wait. Gangrel calls for silence, while Chrom worries about Emmeryn. Emmeryn asks Gangrel if there is no hope that he'll listen to reason; Gangrel, interpreting Emmery's request as "listen to more of [her] sanctimonious babble", says no—all Gangrel wants to hear is the thunk of arrows and a splat as Emmeryn hits the ground. Gangrel asks Emmeryn to take one long, last look from her perch, that she enjoys looking down on people, then asks that Emmeryn meet the ground and her maker—unless somebody were to hand over the Fire Emblem at that moment. As Emmeryn stands silent, Chrom agrees to hand the Fire Emblem over to Gangrel—he knows Emmeryn won't approve of this decision, but it's his final decision. Maybe they'll someday face a crisis where maybe the Fire Emblem would have helped, but Chrom knows that Ylisse needs Emmeryn today, that the people need their exalt, and that he and Lissa need their sister—if the dark days come, they'll face them together. Emmeryn thanks Chrom, and says she now knows what she must do. Chrom is about to ask Emmeryn what she's doing; Emmeryn asks the Plegians to hear the truth of her words—war will win nothing but sadness and pain both within and outside their borders. She asks the Plegians free themselves from this hated, from the cycle of pain and vengeance, to do what they must—as she will do. Emmeryn asks the Plegians to see that one selfless act has the power to change the world. Chrom tries to talk Emmeryn out of it.

(Cutscene: "Emmeryn") Chrom is running toward Emmeryn, bent on stopping her from making a selfless action. As the focus shifts to Emmeryn, she takes a look around, then notices there's no reaction, and if she was wrong then. Emmeryn approaches the very edge of the block as Chrom continues running toward her; she proceeds to walk off the block, to the horrified reactions of Chrom and Lissa. As Emmeryn falls, she tells Chrom that her responsibility is some torch she's passing him. She then tells Chrom, Lissa, and all of her people to know that she loved them. A bird flies through the area; next we see is Chrom, coming to a stop and collapsing, then begins crying and calling out to Emmeryn. No splat is ever heard.

Once the cutscene ends, a horrified Robin notices what just went down; Chrom curses out Gangrel, and Lissa also cries out. Gangrel laughs and calls Emmeryn's actions "disgustingly noble", the fall lovely, and says he thought death to be an ugly thing. He'd never seen one fall so gracefully, and he's seen many fall, and reveals that this act has ended Emmeryn, Ylisse's most exalted; Gangrel then ponders how he can ensure everyone remembers the moment of her sacrifice, and states that they should gather her body and put it on display. Chrom tells Gangrel he dies that day; Basilio and Flavia arrive, the former telling Chrom that he has secured an escape route and that the group has to flee. Chrom says that he has to recover Emmeryn's body; Basilio says everybody has to run, and asks Robin not to let Chrom do anything stupid. "Marth" arrives on the scene and notes that she is too late, that her bleak future has been written once more and darkness awaits everyone.

Take note of Libra in the southwest and Tharja in the southeast. Libra is a War Monk with base stats far in excess of what Lissa could hope to achieve even with an early promotion. He can actually take a bump or two if he needs to and is one of your best healers throughout the game. Meanwhile, Tharja is a strong Dark Mage who comes with the first copy of Nosferatu in the game. Nosferatu is extremely powerful in Awakening, granting Dark Mages and Sorcerers unparalleled durability.

Send Robin south to reinforce Libra. It's likely you're going to need to expend a Rescue charge in order to either pull Libra out of the line of fire (especially if the Soldier attacking him has Counter) or hasten Robin's pace to save him sooner. Luckily, he prioritizes using his Concoction if wounded. You want to recruit him by turn 3. Once that's done, send Robin back north to intercept the incoming reinforcement Wyvern Riders. They will appear on turn 5, and every enemy on the map except Campari will aggro at that point. Clearing out the Wyvern Riders gives you a save avenue of retreat in case things get dicey. Recruiting Tharja without accidentally killing her is a bit tricky; you can use Libra or a decently trained Pegasus Knight to lure her out since she doesn't have the inflated stats of a typical Lunatic+ enemy and have Robin eradicate the rest of the enemies. Once the area is clear and Tharja has joined you, waltz up to Campari and delete him.

Upon clearing this chapter, all games will have at least 100 Renown, allowing you to claim the Second Seal. In addition, Steel weaponry becomes available in the shop, and should be made standard issue.

Trivia
Trivia
* Gangrel and Aversa are on the map during the battle preparations phase, but leave before the start of turn 1. Gangrel uses the wrong help text for this part of the game (it makes sense for his appearance in paralogue 18) and his movement is disabled here, but otherwises uses the exact setup he will use in chapter 11, right down to the Dragonstone he will drop in that chapter (he is not set to drop it here). Aside from having no Goddess Icon in her inventory, Aversa uses the exact setup she will use in chapter 22.
*During preparations, Gangrel uses his help text description as a recruitable character (describing him as the "former king of Plegia"), rather than his description from Chapter 11.
** Aversa's significant statistical advantage over Gangrel foreshadows her having a more important role in the overall story than Gangrel.

— Emmeryn's last words

Emmeryn (Japanese: 聖王エメリナ Holy Queen Emerina) is the ninth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds arrive at Plegia Castle with the goal of rescuing Emmeryn before the Plegians execute her. Events take an unexpected turn after the end of the main skirmish.

In addition to the next chapter in the storyline, completing this chapter will also unlock the fourth paralogue chapter.

Plot

Main article: Emmeryn (chapter)/Script

Summary

The rescue fails, and Chrom is forced to choose between the Fire Emblem and his sister. To spare him and the world further conflict, Emmeryn ends her life.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Trivia

 • During preparations, Gangrel uses his help text description as a recruitable character (describing him as the "former king of Plegia"), rather than his description from Chapter 11.
