The Eight Generals (八神将 Eight Divine Generals) were eight powerful warriors who fought in the Scouring in Elibe, leading the forces of mankind in banishing the dragon race from the face of the continent.

Overview

Late in the conflict, when the Divine Weapons were created to efficiently combat the dragons, eight of the warriors judged to be the most powerful in the human forces were chosen to wield them; these eight came to be known as the "Eight Generals".[1] Led by Hartmut, the Generals travelled to the Dragon Temple in what would later become Bern and launched an assault upon it and its dragon occupants, wielding the Divine Weapons. In this battle, the immense power of the Divine Weapons and of the dragons reacted to each other and caused the Ending Winter, forcing the dragons to take Manakete form.[2]

Even with the dragons forced into the weaker forms and rendered helpless, the Generals nonetheless pressed the assault, mercilessly slaughtering the Manakete; Jahn was among these Manakete and escaped with only a deep wound inflicted by one of the Generals.[3] When they ventured into the Temple, they found Idenn in Manakete form, who transformed into her Demon Dragon form and engaged them in battle; she was struck down by Hartmut wielding the Binding Blade, which reacted to Hartmut's hesitance and failed to kill her. Afterward, at Hartmut's insistence, the Generals created a temple in which to seal her away using the Binding Blade and Fire Emblem.

With the war over, the Generals went their separate ways in the now-peaceful Elibe. Most of them formed a new nation in some corner of the continent, and they all enshrined their Divine Weapons in a hidden location to attempt to prevent their immense power from being misused; Bramimond placed a powerful magical seal upon all of the weapons from his new home, the Shrine of Seals, preventing their use without him lifting the seal. By 980 years later, Bramimond and Athos were the only Generals still alive; Athos assisted the Lycian lords Eliwood, Hector and Lyn in fighting Nergal, a former friend of Athos who intended to summon and control dragons for his own personal use, and to this end persuaded Bramimond to lift the seal upon the Divine Weapons so they could be used against Nergal. After Nergal's death and that of a single dragon he managed to summon, Athos himself died from exhaustion, and Bramimond also passed within twenty years.
