Hartmut posed a question when he bound the demon dragon. And I intend to answer it!
— Roy

Hartmut (Japanese: ハルトムート Hartmut) was the leader of the Eight Legends of Elibe and a hero of the Scouring. He was the original wielder of both Eckesachs and the Binding Blade, and went on to found the Kingdom of Bern.

Biography

Late in the Scouring, Hartmut was chosen as one of the eight mightiest warriors of mankind to wield the newly-forged legendary weapons against the dragonkin.[1] He was appointed the leader of this group of eight and given both Eckesachs and the Binding Blade, and led the Eight Legends in an attack on the Dragon Sanctuary in order to defeat Idunn, the demon dragon. During this battle, the sheer power of the legendary weapons caused the Ending Winter and forced the dragons to revert to weak, human-like forms.[2] Hartmut and the other Generals took the opportunity and easily slaughtered the manaketes.

Hartmut and the Generals pressed on into the Sanctuary, where they found Idunn in her manakete form. Confronted with what appeared to only be a human girl, the Generals hesitated; Hartmut, in particular, had come to pity her for the rumors of how she had been created.[3] When she transformed and attacked them, Hartmut fought back with the Binding Blade and dealt her a grievous wound, but the blade's power shifted to reflect how, deep down, Hartmut did not wish to kill and instead stunned her. He convinced the other Generals that there was no need to kill Idunn, then traveled deep into the remote mountains of what would later become Bern and constructed the Shrine of Seals, where he used the Binding Blade and Fire Emblem to safely seal Idunn away. He then built the Kingdom of Bern in the territory surrounding the Shrine of Seals and took its throne as its first king, and after his death his descendants, the Bern royal family, continued to guard the Shrine of Seals for a thousand years,[4] until his descendant Zephiel deliberately unsealed Idunn as part of his plan to return Elibe to dragon control.

Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi

Hartmut is revealed to be Al's true father late in Hasha no Tsurugi. When Al visited Niime, the two witnessed Hartmut's battle with Idunn and its aftermath through her crystal ball. Through this crystal ball, it was revealed that Hartmut had unknowingly fallen in love with a manakete, Milithia, and fathered a child with her. When she revealed that she was a dragon, Hartmut knew that he – the man who purged dragons from Elibe – could not be romantically involved with one and used the Binding Blade on her and the infant Al, sealing them away in a cavern.

    Roy: What happened?
Jahn: The laws of nature started to collapse. Snow began to fall in summer. Stars shone in the middle of day...
Roy: You mean it caused the Ending Winter? I thought it occurred because the dragons released vast amounts of energy...
Jahn: Is that how your legends go?
Roy: The power of the legendary weapons were used to restore order to nature. That's what I learned.
Jahn: So in other words, we were the cause of everything bad that happened. How typical of you humans. But the truth is as I said.

  4. "After persuading the others that it should be spared, Hartmut built a shrine hidden deep in what you now call Bern. There, he bound the demon dragon away using the blade and the Fire Emblem.
