— Marcus to Lowen in a support conversation.

Marcus (Japanese: マーカス Marcus) is a playable character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. He is a paladin of Pherae, first appearing in Chapter 1 of The Binding Blade and the first chapter of Eliwood's route in Fire Emblem.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

At the beginning of The Binding Blade, Marcus is seen escorting Roy back to Pherae per request of Lord Eliwood. However, the situation changes abruptly when bandits attack the castle; the old knight steps into the battlefield following his young master's orders.

Once the attack is repelled, Marcus stays for Roy's side for the rest of the story, and after the end of the war, he returns to Pherae and finally retires. However, his well-earned rest is continually interrupted, as countless knights continue to go to him for training.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Marcus joins in Chapter 1, fitting the Jagen archetype of this game as an older, pre-promoted Paladin with good bases and bad growths. Since his growths aren't good at all, one may think it's not very recommended to use Marcus, since other units could use the exp more, but this is a mistake. Marcus' wonderful bases are a gift in The Binding Blade, especially on Hard Mode. If you are playing Normal Mode, Marcus will be able to one round early game Fighters with Iron Swords, while in Hard Mode he deals just enough damage to cripple them and leave them easy pickings for weaker units such as Roy, Alen, and Lance. Also, Marcus' Lance rank alongside with his Silver Lance make him able to dish high damage to most enemies, most notably the nasty early game Mercenaries and Chapter 7 Wyvern Riders. Another thing to note about Marcus is his high Resistance which is very helpful against early-game Mages, since most non-magical units have bad Resistance.

Marcus' Skill stat is very high, allowing him to use Hand Axes and Javelins very well in the early game, unlike most units (although he is slowed down by one point with Hand Axes). One may want to raise Marcus' Axe rank to D, so he can use Hammers to make short work of some Knight bosses. His Sword Rank allows him to use Armorslayers, which have better Hit chances, but those suffer from a disadvantage against Lances.

His Ice Affinity is very defensive but his best Support partners join in the same chapter (Alen, Lance, and to some extent Roy). Roy is his fastest building support, as it takes them 15 turns together to get C Rank and Roy's Fire Affinity gives Marcus very good offensive boosts (also, Marcus can carry Roy faster to the thrones because of his 8 Movement, compared to Roy's 5 Movement, which also builds Support points). A well-known strategy is, however, a support with both Alen and Lance, which build at the same speed (20 turns for C rank). Alen also has the Fire Affinity, giving good offensive boosts for Marcus in trade for avoid and some defense, and Lance's Anima Affinity gives attack, defense and avoid, some very essential things for the early game (since both Alen and Lance start with very bad bulk and have trouble reliably dodging axe users). His other supports aren't that great, as both Wolt and Lilina are foot-locked units and they are mostly defensive.

Even when Marcus' bases start to drop off, he is still a good filler unit, mainly because of his good Aid and Movement. He loses nearly all relevance from Chapter 13 onwards, since the enemies become stronger and he is not able to fight them very well but can be useful for his class.

Overall, Marcus is a great early game unit, almost mandatory in Hard Mode, though he really drops off for the rest of the game as a combat unit.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Marcus is first seen accompanying Eliwood in his quest to find Lord Elbert's whereabouts; this same party reunites later with Hector's army. If the focus of the story is in Eliwood, he acts as an adviser; otherwise, he remains in the background.

After the crisis is averted, he returns to Pherae, becomes the head of Pherae's military forces and dedicates himself to train young squires. Should he have an A support with the merchant Merlinus, the latter goes to Pherae to work for Eliwood, focusing in the financial matters.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

As in The Binding Blade, Marcus serves as the Jagen archetype for the player's army, capable of handling most enemies in the early game with ease while the other units get their footing. However, unlike his older incarnation, Marcus in The Blazing Blade is a powerhouse who can remain relevant for the entire game. This is due to his extraordinary base stats, weapon level, and mobility, combined with the relatively weaker enemies that appear in The Blazing Blade.

Outside of Hector Hard Mode, Marcus's starting power and mobility can carry him through the majority of the game (indeed, it is more than possible to solo the game with him in Eliwood's Tale). Additionally, his growths, while not stellar, are higher than those of the average Jagen, thereby extending his usability as far as the endgame.

In Hector Hard Mode, Marcus can still play the role of a traditional Jagen in the early game and then transition into a regular party member. Although he may not retain his role as a combat ace into the mid-to-late game, his abilities as a Paladin to Rescue-Drop units across the map and to wield the whole weapon triangle will never lose potency.

For supports, Marcus's two easiest options are Eliwood and Lowen since all three characters join together in the early game. Lowen is particularly convenient because he and Marcus have a fast growth and can stay near each other with their similar move ranges. The largest bonuses this support grants are to avoid and accuracy. Stacked with the boost to defense Marcus's Ice affinity gives, the extra evasion can make both units very hard to take down. As for Eliwood, his Anima stacks up on defense, avoid, and critical evasion, again granting Marcus and his partner a nice boost to their durability. However, Eliwood's low movement may make it harder to grow this support until the later game when he picks up a horse.

Overall, Marcus is one of the best Jagen archetypes in the series, and should not be overlooked simply because of his low growth rates. On easier difficulties Marcus can be used throughout the whole game without too many drawbacks. In Hector Hard Mode, he is still a fantastic Jagen who can transition into an excellent utility unit if his stats begin to falter.

Personality

Marcus' main trait is his dedication to his job. As an experienced knight, he watches over Pherae's newest recruits. He is a strict teacher, though; he does not hesitate to point their every mistake and yell at them if necessary. A common complaint of Marcus is that younger generations do not have the spirit needed to fight for their marquess[3]. He does not discriminate any soldier, though, which Isadora, the only female knight of Pherae at that time, is grateful for[4].

He shows a different side in his supports with Eliwood and Merlinus. Marcus is fond of remembering Eliwood's childhood and tends to praise him, much to the latter's embarrassment[5]. In their last support, he even swears to find an adequate bride for his lord. In his supports with Merlinus, he shows an affinity for culinary matters, which surprises the merchant[6].

In The Binding Blade, Marcus has become softer in his manners, but his dedication to his duty has not diminished at all. However, he is aware of his advanced age, and consequently, he is looking for his successor; depending on whom the player supports him with, he can pass down this title to Alen, Lance or Wolt. His relationship with Roy is more or less the same as with Eliwood, worrying much about his liege's welfare and going as far as subtly encouraging Lilina's affections for Roy[7].
