Accepting a quest in Three Houses.

Various games in the Fire Emblem series have implemented quests (Japanese: tbd)—also referred to as requests, sidequests, or missions—which offer the player a reward, often gold or renown, in exchange for completing a set task. Quests are received from non-player characters in exploration segments. The tasks laid out by a quest are generally atypical of Fire Emblem objectives, but are fairly standard of more conventional RPGs.

Quests first appeared in Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE before appearing in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and Three Houses. Quests are also present in Fire Emblem Heroes, but are relatively different from those in other games.

Overview

When talking to certain characters, the player may be prompted with a quest, which they may accept or reject. If a quest is accepted, the player may being making progress toward completing it; if a quest is rejected, the player can usually speak to the NPC again, and will again be prompted with the quest. There is no punishment for rejecting or failing to complete a quest, aside from not receiving the reward for completing it.

The most common quest is to deliver an item to the quest giver; other common tasks include engaging in specific battles or talking to particular characters. Returning to the quest giver is often a requirement to completing a quest, but is not always so. The rewards for a quest are granted when a quest is completed. Renown and gold (or marks) are the most common rewards for completing quests, but rewards may also include a number of items of varying rarity.

Quests often require a certain amount of progress through the story before they can be accepted, in some cases because they are accepted in an area that was inaccessible beforehand; alternatively, a quest may require that some other quests be completed prior. Some quests may expire after certain events, disallowing the player from completing them. Other quests may be able to be completed at any point, but can only be accepted through a certain window of time.

Quests generally have some element of a story to them; however, these stories are generally minor, and rarely relevant to the main plot.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Sidequests in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia can be by talking to characters in the various world map locations. Locations hosting the giver of a sidequest the player has accepted are marked with an icon on the location information on the 3DS's lower screen.

Many sidequests can be repeated once they have been completed, providing a reward for completing it each time. Many of these sidequests provide a reward at random from a set of possible ones, often including a few rarer unrepeatable rewards, requiring the player to complete the sidequest many times to see each reward.

Many sidequests are given before they can be completed; for instance, A Few Gears Short can be accepted at the start of Act 2, but cannot be completed until the player can reach Duma Tower in Act 4. While many sidequests become available after story progress, only two expire after a certain point: Corraling Coral at the start of Act 4, and The Merchant of Death at the start of Attack on the Last Bastion

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Quests in Fire Emblem: Three Houses can be accepted by talking to characters while exploring Garreg Mach Monastery. A list of quests the player has accepted or completed is available in the Monastery menu. The bulletin boards at the Monastery allow the player to view a list of their active quests and quests that they may accept, and allows them to fast-travel to the location of those quests. The map of the Monastery shows the locations of quests the player may accept, and often shows the locations of objectives such as characters to speak to or items to pick up.

A character who can offer a quest or who can be spoken to as part of one has an icon above their dialogue box visible as the player passes them by. Standard quests are denoted with an icon resembling tan parchment, story-pertinent quests with red, and DLC-related quests with light blue; quests that have not been accepted are denoted with an exclamation mark (!) on the icon, while accepted quests are denoted with small lines on the icon mimicking indiscernible writing. Completed quests are noted with a check mark (✓) in the quest list.

Like in Shadows of Valentia, most quests become available after certain points in the story. Unlike Shadows of Valentia, most quests in Three Houses expire at some point; expired quests the player had accepted but not completed are still noted in the quest list, but their details cannot be viewed. Additionally, there is a pair of quests that cannot both be completed: Catherine's Request and Shamir's Request require the player to give a one-of-a-kind material to the quest giver, and when one quest is completed, the other expires.

Unlike Shadows of Valentia, no quest is repeatable per se; however, the Supply Run quest has a variant for each chapter of Part II, emulating the repeatable quests.
