The kingdom, later empire, of Grandbell commanded as part of its armies a series of elite knight brigades. Six of these brigades are known, associated with the capital and five of the six dukedoms. Most of the brigades were specifically associated with a weapon type in which they collectively specialised. While it is probable that the dukedom of Edda also had its own knight brigade in the vein of the others, it never appeared.

Collective history

In the year 757, Grandbell declared war on the northern nation of Isaac after forces from Rivough attacked Darna. Under the command of Grandbell's Prince Kurth, the majority of Grandbell's army set out for Isaac; among them was Duke Vylon's Grün Ritter, Duke Ring's Beige Ritter, and Duke Langobalt's Grau Ritter. Following Isaac's defeat in the war, as part of a conspiracy with Dukes Reptor and (supposedly) Alvis, Langobalt turned on Kurth and killed him, framing Vylon and his son Sigurd for the crime, and obliterating the Grün Ritter in his efforts to arrest Vylon; at this time, Ring's son Andorey killed his father and assumed the role of Duke of Jungby and command of the Beige Ritter. When Langobalt and Reptor led their forces to Agustria to arrest Sigurd, Sigurd instead fled to Silezha and remained in hiding there for a year, until Grandbell's forces overtook Silezha's Lubeck Castle in preparation to invade Silezha and capture him. In response, Sigurd led his army out of Silezha and defeated Langobalt and Reptor's armies, but was soon after executed by Alvis' Rot Ritter of Velthomer, an event known as the Battle of Barhara.

With the deaths of everyone opposing him, Alvis became the emperor of Grandbell, now an empire, and successfully subdued most of the Jugdral nations, placing them under Grandbellian rule under the administration of the Grandbell noble houses. Seventeen years later, Sigurd's son Serlis formed a liberation army in the Dozel-controlled Isaac, which stormed through Isaac, the Manster District and Miletos, and freed the countries from the Grandbell rule. From Miletos, he set his sights on Grandbell itself, crossing the Miletos Channel to defeat Alvis' Rot Ritter and reclaim Chalphy. With Chalphy secured, Serlis' army charged Grandbell, opposed by the Grau Ritter under Scopio, the Gelb Ritter under Hilda, the Beige Ritter under Scopio and the Weiss Ritter under Ishtar. All three brigades fell to Serlis' army, as did the Loptous-possessed Imperial Prince Yurius, and Serlis successfully reclaimed Grandbell and freed the world from its oppression.

Appearance(s)

The Weiss Ritter (ヴァイスリッター) was the knight brigade of Barhara, the capital of Grandbell and seat of its king/emperor. This brigade comprised the nation's royal guard, tasked with the defense of the capital and its king. Unlike the other brigades, it appears that Weiss Ritter was never directly led by the head of the respective house, with the task seemingly delegated to other members of the Grandbell nobility.

During the war with Isaac, Alvis of Velthomer had been entrusted with the command of the Weiss Ritter, to protect King Azmur. Twenty years later, command of the Weiss Ritter was in the hands of Ishtar of Freege, fiancée to Prince Yurius. At the height of the final confrontation with Serlis' liberation army, following the downfall of Freege, Ishtar led the Weiss Ritter from Barhara to confront the enemy, but the Weiss Ritter were defeated.

Appearance(s)

The Grau Ritter (グラオリッター) was the knight brigade of Dozel, comprised of mounted axe-wielding knights. Under the leadership of Duke Langobalt during the Isaac war, the Grau Ritter were used to decimate the Chalphy Grün Ritter when Langobalt turned on Kurth and Vylon. After this, they were placed under the command of Langobalt's son Danan to subdue an uprising in Isaac following its defeat in the war, and much to Langobalt's frustration they were away too long to reinforce him against Sigurd's army at Lubeck[2].

At some point in the seventeen years afterward, the Grau Ritter were placed under the command of Danan's own son Burian, and were eventually stationed in Grandbell in preparation for Serlis' approaching liberation army. Burian led the Grau Ritter in a charge against Chalphy Castle following Serlis' reclamation of Edda, a charge which failed and resulted in the defeat of the Grau Ritter.

Appearance(s)

The Gelb Ritter (ゲルプリッター) was the knight brigade of Freege, comprised of mages specialising in thunder magic. When the Grandbell Empire claimed the Manster District as its territory and placed the Freege family under Duke Bloom in control of the territory, some of the Gelb Ritter served in Freege's occupation army in the region, participating under the command of Reinhardt in the failed attempt to prevent Leaf's liberation army from crossing the Great River of Thracia[3]. Later, during Serlis' march on Grandbell, the Gelb Ritter were assembled under Duchess Hilda to prevent further progress on Serlis' part after the fall of the Grau Ritter, working with Scopio's Beige Ritter to trap the liberation army.

Appearance(s)

The Beige Ritter (バイゲリッター) was the knight brigade of Jungby, comprised of elite mounted archers. In the war with Isaac, the Beige Ritter were led by then-Duke Ring. Following Ring's murder, command of the Beige Ritter was assumed by his son Andorey, the murderer. Andorey led the Beige Ritter first to Silezha to assist Daccar in attempting to overthrow Queen Rahna, and the brigade was responsible for killing Mahnya of the Four Angelic Knights; once Silezha Castle had been seized for Daccar, the Beige Ritter pulled out of Silezha. Shortly afterward, the Beige Ritter assisted Langobalt in defending Lubeck Castle from Sigurd's return to Grandbell, but were annihilated.

By eighteen years later, the Beige Ritter had been reformed, now serving Andorey's son Scopio. In the final confrontation with Serlis' revolution army, Scopio was tasked by Hilda with ambushing the army from its rear while it travelled to Freege. In this attempt, Serlis' army fought back and the Beige Ritter was again annihilated.

The Rot Ritter (ロートリッター) was the knight brigade of Velthomer, comprised of mages specialising in fire magic. As Sigurd's army marched on Grandbell following the end of the Isaac war, the Rot Ritter were stationed in Barhara, as a last resort in case Langobalt and Reptor failed to repel him[4]. When Sigurd reached Velthomer Castle, he was led by Aida to Barhara, where the Rot Ritter executed his army with Meteor spells in what became known as the Battle of Barhara. Seventeen years later, Alvis and the Rot Ritter were ordered by Yurius to guard Chalphy Castle as Serlis' liberation army passed through Miletos, attempting to repel the army as it crossed the Miletos Channel into Grandbell, but they failed and were eliminated.
