The kingdom, later empire, of Grannvale commanded as part of its armies a series of elite knight brigades. Six of these brigades are known, associated with the capital and five of the six dukedoms. Most of the brigades were specifically associated with a weapon type in which they collectively specialised. While it is probable that the dukedom of Edda also had its own knight brigade in the vein of the others, it never appeared.

In the year 757, Grannvale declared war on the northern nation of Isaach after forces from Rivough attacked Darna. Under the command of Grannvale's Prince Kurth, the majority of Grannvale's army set out for Isaach; among them was Duke Vylon's Grünritter, Duke Ring's Beige Ritter, and Duke Langobalt's Grau Ritter. Following Isaach's defeat in the war, as part of a conspiracy with Dukes Reptor and (supposedly) Arvis, Langobalt turned on Kurth and killed him, framing Vylon and his son Sigurd for the crime, and obliterating the Grünritter in his efforts to arrest Vylon; at this time, Ring's son Andorey killed his father and assumed the role of Duke of Jungby and command of the Beige Ritter. When Langobalt and Reptor led their forces to Agustria to arrest Sigurd, Sigurd instead fled to Silesse and remained in hiding there for a year, until Grannvale's forces overtook Silesse's Lubeck Castle in preparation to invade Silesse and capture him. In response, Sigurd led his army out of Silesse and defeated Langobalt and Reptor's armies, but was soon after executed by Arvis' Rot Ritter of Velthomer, an event known as the Battle of Belhalla.

Under the command of Grannvale's Prince Kurth, the majority of Grannvale's army set out for Isaach; among them was Duke Byron's Grünritter, Duke Ring's Beige Ritter, and Duke Lombard's Grau Ritter. Following Isaach's defeat in the war, as part of a conspiracy with Dukes Reptor and (supposedly) Arvis, Lombard turned on Kurth and killed him, framing Byron and his son Sigurd for the crime, and obliterating the Grünritter in his efforts to arrest Byron; at this time, Ring's son Andrey killed his father and assumed the role of Duke of Yngvi and command of the Beige Ritter. When Lombard and Reptor led their forces to Agustria to arrest Sigurd, Sigurd instead fled to Silesse and remained in hiding there for a year, until Grannvale's forces overtook Silesse's Lubeck Castle in preparation to invade Silesse and capture him. With the deaths of everyone opposing him, Arvis became the emperor of Grannvale, now an empire, and successfully subdued most of the Jugdral nations, placing them under Grannvaleian rule under the administration of the Grannvale noble houses. Seventeen years later, Sigurd's son Seliph formed a liberation army in the Dozel-controlled Isaach, which stormed through Isaach, the Manster District and Miletos, and freed the countries from the Grannvale rule. From Miletos, he set his sights on Grannvale itself, crossing the Miletos Channel to defeat Arvis' Rot Ritter and reclaim Chalphy. With Chalphy secured, Seliph's army charged Grannvale, opposed by the Grau Ritter under Scopio, the Gelb Ritter under Hilda, the Beige Ritter under Scopio and the Weissritter under Ishtar. All three brigades fell to Seliph's army, as did the Loptous-possessed Imperial Prince Julius, and Seliph successfully reclaimed Grannvale and freed the world from its oppression.

The Weissritter (Japanese: ヴァイスリッター Weiß Ritter) was the knight brigade of Belhalla, the capital of Grannvale and seat of its king/emperor.  This brigade comprised the nation's royal guard, tasked with the defense of the capital and its king.  Unlike the other brigades, it appears that the Weissritter was never directly led by the head of the respective house, with the task seemingly delegated to other members of the Grannvale nobility.

During the war with Isaach, Arvis of Velthomer had been entrusted with the command of the Weissritter, to protect King Azmur. Twenty years later, command of the Weissritter was in the hands of Ishtar of Friege, fiancée to Prince Julius. At the height of the final confrontation with Seliph's liberation army, following the downfall of Friege, Ishtar led the Weissritter from Belhalla to confront the enemy, but the Weissritter were defeated.

At some point in the seventeen years afterward, the Grau Ritter were placed under the command of Danan's own son Burian, and were eventually stationed in Grannvale in preparation for Seliph's approaching liberation army. Burian led the Grau Ritter in a charge against Chalphy Castle following Seliph's reclamation of Edda, a charge which failed and resulted in the defeat of the Grau Ritter.

In this attempt, Seliph's army fought back and the Beige Ritter was again annihilated.

The kingdom, later empire, of Grannvale commanded as part of its armies a series of elite knight brigades. Six of these brigades are known, associated with the capital and five of the six dukedoms. Most of the brigades were specifically associated with a weapon type in which they collectively specialized. While it is probable that the dukedom of Edda also had its own knight brigade in the vein of the others, it has never appeared.

Collective history

In the year 757, Grannvale declared war on the northern nation of Isaach after forces from Ribaut attacked Dahna. In response, Sigurd led his army out of Silesse and defeated Lombard and Reptor's armies, but was soon after executed by Arvis' Rot Ritter of Velthomer, an event known as the Battle of Belhalla.

With the deaths of everyone opposing him, Arvis became the emperor of Grannvale, now an empire, and successfully subdued most of the Jugdral nations, placing them under Grannvalean rule under the administration of the Grannvale noble houses. Seventeen years later, Sigurd's son Seliph formed a liberation army in the Dozel-controlled Isaach, which stormed through Isaach, the Munster District and Miletos, and freed the countries from Grannvalean rule. From Miletos, he set his sights on Grannvale itself, crossing the Miletos Channel to defeat Arvis' Rot Ritter and reclaim Chalphy. With Chalphy secured, Seliph's army charged Grannvale, opposed by the Grau Ritter under Brian, the Gelb Ritter under Hilda, the Beige Ritter under Scipio and the Weissritter under Ishtar. All the brigades fell to Seliph's army, as did the Loptous-possessed Imperial Prince Julius, and Seliph successfully reclaimed Grannvale and freed Jugdral from its oppression.

The Grau Ritter (Japanese: グラオリッター Grau Ritter) was the knight brigade of Dozel, comprised of mounted axe-wielding knights. Under the leadership of Duke Lombard during the Isaach war, the Grau Ritter were used to decimate the Chalphy Grünritter when Lombard turned on Kurth and Byron. After this, they were placed under the command of Lombard's son Danann to subdue an uprising in Isaach following its defeat in the war, and much to Lombard's frustration they were away too long to reinforce him against Sigurd's army at Lubeck.[2]

At some point in the seventeen years afterward, the Grau Ritter were placed under the command of Danann's own son Brian, and were eventually stationed in Grannvale in preparation for Seliph's approaching liberation army. Brian led the Grau Ritter in a charge against Chalphy Castle following Seliph's reclamation of Edda, a charge which failed and resulted in the defeat of the Grau Ritter.

Appearance(s)

The Gelb Ritter (Japanese: ゲルプリッター Gelb Ritter) was the knight brigade of Friege, comprised of magical knights specializing in thunder magic, and personal guard of the Friege house.[3]

When the Grannvale Empire claimed the Munster District as its territory and placed the Friege family under Duke Bloom in control of the territory, some of the Gelb Ritter served in Friege's occupation army in the region, participating under the command of Reinhardt in the failed attempt to prevent Leif's liberation army from crossing the Great River of Thracia.[4]

Later, during Seliph's march on Grannvale, the Gelb Ritter were assembled under Duchess Hilda to prevent further progress on Seliph's part after the fall of the Grau Ritter, working with Scipio's Beige Ritter to trap the liberation army.

 • When the Gelb Ritter appear as NPCs at the end of Chapter 3 of Genealogy of the Holy War, they are all Mage Knight units. When the Gelb Ritter returns in the Endgame, they are instead composed of Barons and are the only generic enemies in Genealogy of the Holy War to have the class. In Thracia 776, all members of the Gelb Ritter appear as Mage Knights.

The Beige Ritter (Japanese: バイゲリッター Beige Ritter) was the knight brigade of Yngvi, comprised of elite mounted archers. In the war with Isaach, the Beige Ritter were led by then-Duke Ring. Following Ring's murder, command of the Beige Ritter was assumed by his son Andrey, the murderer. Andrey led the Beige Ritter first to Silesse to assist Daccar in attempting to overthrow Queen Lahna, and the brigade was responsible for killing Annand of the Four Angelic Knights; once Silesse Castle had been seized for Daccar, the Beige Ritter pulled out of Silesse. Shortly afterward, the Beige Ritter assisted Lombard in defending Lubeck Castle from Sigurd's return to Grannvale, but were annihilated.

By eighteen years later, the Beige Ritter had been reformed, now serving Andrey's son Scipio. In the final confrontation with Seliph's revolution army, Scipio was tasked by Hilda with ambushing the army from its rear while it travelled to Friege. In this attempt, Seliph's army fought back and the Beige Ritter was again annihilated.
