SpotPass (いつの間に通信, Anytime Communication) is a content-delivery feature of the Nintendo 3DS console. When the console is in sleep mode and SpotPass is enabled, the console will automatically connect to the internet (if a connection is available) and download new content for 3DS software and game titles which employ the functionality. The reception of new content via SpotPass is indicated with a shining blue light on the console's top right corner.
In Fire Emblem Awakening, SpotPass is employed to deliver unique characters, items, sidequest chapters and other facilities. Data obtained through SpotPass transmission is collected by checking the game's Download Box, which then transfers the received data into gameplay.

Encountering
Innes via SpotPass
The key attraction of Awakening's employment of SpotPass is its delivery of characters from past Fire Emblem series games. Once the SpotPass download has been confirmed, these past characters will appear on the world map, leading a team of generic enemies. When approached on the map, the player can buy items from these characters, pay a sum of gold to hire the unit into their party ("scout" them), or can challenge the character's team to a skirmish where the reward for winning is for the character to join the player's party.
In most downloadable content chapters, the enemies are also comprised of characters from past games; for Shadow Dragon and Seisen no Keifu's first generation characters present in this capacity, the characters used lines up exactly with the characters available to be playable via SpotPass. This has resulted in the other enemy ranks being used to identify future SpotPass groups. Nintendo has confirmed that their intent is to make available 120 SpotPass characters; this theoretically lines up with ten characters per Fire Emblem game, except that Seisen no Keifu is represented by twenty characters for ten per generation, Ankoku Ryuu and Monshou no Nazo are not themselves represented in favour of their remakes being represented instead, and a team comprised of villains from across the series makes up the last ten SpotPass characters.

Occasionally, entirely new sidequest chapters are released via SpotPass. Like the downloadable chapters, they contain new units to be recruited; unlike the downloadable content chapters, these are relevant (though not critical) to the main story of Awakening, and the new units are relatively normal units in that they can support and marry.
