Devil Axe: Difference between revisions
(Edited the FE1 Devil Axe locations list, which previously did not mention that a pirate drops a devil axe in Ch9. This is mentioned on the wiki page on this site under the Pyrathi Dragon page and confirmed by my current play through where I just obtained it by defeating a pirate on that map.) |

The Devil Axe (Japanese: デビルアクス Devil Axe) is a rare axe that was introduced in FE1. It is a high-risk, high-reward weapon: it has exceptionally high raw power compared to other axes, but it has a chance of backfiring and damaging its wielder instead of the target. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired, except in FE11 and FE12, where the backfire damage is calculated as if the user attacked themselves. | ||
Despite the danger it poses to anybody who would use it, the Devil Axe has some advantages. In addition to its exceptional might, it has a low required weapon level which lets almost any axe user immediately use it, and in The Blazing Blade and The Sacred Stones, using it awards a very high amount of weapon experience to increase axe ranks. The risk of having it backfire is mitigated by its wielder's luck stat, although there is always a minimum 1% chance that it will backfire regardless of the user's luck. Additionally, in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia it heals its user when they defeat an enemy, although since axes are usable only by enemies in that game, this does not help the player. In Three Houses, rather than having a random chance of backfiring, it instead deals a fixed 10 damage to the user after every round of combat that it is used in. | Despite the danger it poses to anybody who would use it, the Devil Axe has some advantages. The Devil Axe (Japanese: デビルアクス Devil Axe) is a rare axe that was introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is a high-risk, high-reward weapon: it has exceptionally high raw power compared to other axes, but it has a chance of backfiring and damaging its wielder instead of the target. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired, except in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, where the backfire damage is calculated as if the user attacked themselves.

Trivia
- The unused Devil Axe in Path of Radiance is unusual in that it lacks a 3D model for units to wield in battle scenes. If it is hacked into the game, the missing model causes its user to freeze up in a bind pose (pictured below with Boyd), and the game crashes as a result.
- In Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and its remakes, the villager in Chapter 3 who gives Marth the Devil Axe describes its backfiring effect as consuming the blood and flesh of its user.[2]
