To War at Gronder (Japanese: グロンダーズの会戦 Goulders Battle) is the main battle map of the seventeenth chapter on the Verdant Wind route in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In this map, the forces of Adrestia, Faerghus, and Leicester collide in a massive, bloody battle.
Beginning log
At Gronder Field, where the Battle of the Eagle and Lion was once held, the house leaders of five years ago have a fateful reunion...but this time, the contest between the Empire, the Kingdom, and the Alliance is no mock battle.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
The Battle at Gronder can easily be considered one of the most difficult battles in the Verdant Wind storyline. Many of the enemies are very strong, and there are also some challenges connected to the terrain. This battle also has a lot of variability, as most of your enemies are, by default, Black Eagle and Blue Lion students that could potentially be recruited during Part 1. If you recruited Bernadetta, Petra, Felix, Mercedes, Sylvain, or Ingrid to Golden Deer, they will be replaced by a generic Imperial or Kingdom unit of the same job class. These replacements tend to be slightly weaker than the real students, but not enough so to warrant a different strategy for fighting them.
A major part of this battlefield is the central hill, which has a ballista at the top of it. Taking the ballista for yourself will make things noticeably easier, especially as an enemy unit (Bernadetta if you did not recruit her) is already using it at the start of the battle and will keep firing on your units; however, this should not be done lightly. Having any unit reach the central hill will provoke many of the enemy units and cause them to start moving, and you will also have to contend with the enemies who are standing on the hill to start with.
Petra will hurry toward you as soon as you approach the central hill, and she (or alternatively her generic Assassin substitute) is one of the most dangerous opponents in this battle. Her Avoidance is through the roof, and she will dodge almost every attack you throw at her. She is also a very powerful attacker, and can easily take down most of your units. It is paramount that you defeat her as quickly as possible so she does not endanger your units. Gambits will be extremely helpful against her, and any units with Hit +20 (especially Ignatz, who has it by default) will not go amiss, either. By contrast, Bernadetta (or her generic Sniper substitute) is not particularly strong; you should be able to defeat her pretty easily.
However, you must not drop your guard even when these units fall. Once any unit reaches the central hill and you defeat both Bernadetta and Petra (or their generic replacements), Edelgard will torch the central hill, causing it to become fiery floor for the rest of the battle and rattling any units that are currently on it. You can technically avert this by defeating Edelgard before you attempt to take the central hill, but this can be awkward to arrange unless you are very clever with Claude's wyvern-riding mobility. That said, it's worth noting that the ballista does not become fiery floor with the rest of the central hill, so the unit you assign to the ballista will be safe from terrain damage as long as they remain there.
Aside from Petra, your most dangerous foe is Dimitri. He is capable of dealing staggering amounts of damage, and he also has the Counterattack skill, allowing him to retaliate even when you target him with an archer or a spellcaster. This makes him a terrifying foe, especially as you must defeat him to win the battle; most of your enemies are optional, but he counts as one of the enemy commanders. If you don't mind taking a couple of risks (or just using Divine Pulse if things go wrong), it can be a good tactic to have Lysithea or another strong spellcaster attack him from the nearby trees, as this will make it possible for them to dodge his inevitable counter. The ballista, once you've taken it from the Empire, is another good option, as Dimitri cannot counterattack a ballista shot. If all else fails (or you don't like risking your spellcasters' lives), the Sword of the Creator is the best last-ditch option for safely taking him out.
In comparison to Dimitri, Edelgard is not quite as powerful or terrifying in this fight. She has Counterattack as well, and (unlike Dimitri) she stands on a stronghold, but if you surround her with two or three of your stronger units and make use of linked attacks, she should soon retreat. Note that she does not take extra damage from armor-effective attacks, but this should not give you too much grief. Once both Edelgard and Dimitri are defeated, the Battle at Gronder will be over.
Now that you're done, take a moment to mourn the former students who inevitably died at Gronder...and then take a moment to congratulate yourself, as you just succeeded at a very difficult battle!
Trivia
- This map is one of the only two maps in Three Houses in which the song "The Dream is Over" does not play when killing any unrecruited units during their appearances as enemy units in Part II. The other map with this distinction is Chapter 18 of the Crimson Flower route.
- During his appearance in this chapter, Dimitri's character model lacks the eyebags that he is normally seen with after the timeskip in non-Crimson Flower routes. In previous versions of Three Houses, he also used his set of character portraits that lack the eyebags, though this was later changed with the version 1.1.0 update.
