This map is one of very few in Gaiden and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia where the map objective is not rout the enemy, but rather defeat the commander. As such, the player will want to prioritize killing Rudolf above all else.

The enemy composition and their position differs dramatically between Normal and Hard mode. In Gaiden and Shadows of Valentia Normal mode, Rudolf will appear within the walls just northeast of player starting positions. As he appears so close, it is  possible to attack him immediately through means such as Warp, bows, and the Mage Ring combined with long ranged spells like Thunder and Sagittae.

In Shadows of Valentias Hard mode, Rudolf starts in a completely different position, far north of Alm's army, making such strategies more dangerous. In addition, Rudolf has much higher Resistance, making mages much less effective as well, though they can still be quite useful as they can strike him without getting countered; given that he has an immense 24 Speed and will thus double nearly everyone, as well as a very high crit rate thanks to his good skill and luck, avoiding counterattacks from him is very desirable.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

In Shadows of Valentia's Hard mode, Rudolf starts in a completely different position, far north of Alm's army, making such strategies more dangerous.

If you want to one-turn this map, give the Ridersbane to a Gold Knight and Warp them far north into the ranges of both Rudolf and a Silver Lance Gold Knight. Gold Knight bases are sufficient to one-shot Rudolf with a critical hit from the fully forged Ridersbane, and he will attack first.

If you want to rout this map, Warp your Bow Knights into the castle so they can take the supplies and engage the enemy Bow Knights in a shootout. Push forward and dispatch Rudolf's guards - they aggro in small bites. If you want to kill the Arcanists, you'll have to use Warp and Rescue. Note that while Rudolf will initiate combat with Alm, he will not actually attack him. Alm can thus aggro and attack him without fear of being killed in the process. In Shadows of Valentia, Alm also has Double Lion at his disposal, making him incredibly valuable in defeating Rudolf.
