Zeiss is a Wyvern Rider that joins in chapter 16 of the Binding Blade. He joins in a rather complicated chapter where it can be rather difficult to recruit him without putting some of your units in risk due to him attcking with a javelin through the wall. In normal mode his bases leave something to be desired, however his hard mode bonuses, are as beneficial to him as Melady's are, starting with a whopping 19 strength at level 7, as well as 39 HP and 15 defense. He joins a bit underleveled and will need to be feed some kills. Early promotion at level 10 is recommended for Zeiss due to him capping his strength very quickly and needing additional speed and skill to be an effective combat unit. Due to his D rank in lances the most powerful lance's he'll have access to are the rather inaccurate steel lances, giving him some significant accuracy issues and iron lances being too weak for this point in the game, but with the help of an early promotion giving him access to the accurate swords and a higher lance rank (particularly granting him access to Killer Lances) and his solid skill growth improving his acceptable base, these issues will gradually disappear.
Zeiss is a Wyvern Rider that joins in Chapter 16 of The Binding Blade. He joins in a rather complicated chapter where it can be difficult to recruit him without putting some of your units at risk due to him attacking with a javelin through the wall. In normal mode, his bases leave something to be desired, but his hard mode bonuses are as beneficial to him as Melady's are, as he starts with ~19 strength at level 7, as well as ~39 HP and ~15 defense.

Sadly, Zeiss's growths are a bit unbalanced, granting him high strength, but lower speed. This is slightly unfortunate, as his strength advantage over other fliers, Melady in particular, tends to be over kill, as he'll probably have 20 strength at Level 8 unpromoted, making the growth useless for at least another 2 levels until potential promotion, and he will get to the moderate cap within a few levels of being a Wyvern Lord, but his speed, in contrast, may lag more than his strength will shine, again, particularly when compared to Melady. As a result, unless given several Speedwings, Zeiss is unlikely to double consistently, making his damage output often worse than faster units such as Melady, meaning that he will need to depend on a critical hit from killer weapons in order to one round enemies. He's not so slow that he gets doubled by a majority of enemies (and the Mercenaries and Myrmidons that will he's not really afraid of getting hit twice by), but his inability to double can be frustrating. Because of this, he makes great use of the brave lance as his doubling issues are made irrelevant by it, and its speed drop, while irrelevant for his doubling capabilities, are negligible enough that he still is unlikely to have to worry about getting doubled often. Another one of Zeiss' issues is his low resistance making him susceptible to enemy status staves and tomes even after using a pure water. His great HP can help him with the latter, but the former will always be an annoyance for him. His weakness to arrows and ballistae will also be a factor at times. The Delphi Shield's an option, but the player will likely want to give it to one of the other fliers, since he tends to be the most physically durable among them.
He joins underleveled and will need to be fed some kills. The easiest way to get Zeiss of level 10 is through the Horseslayer obtained in Chapter 7 if it hasn't broken yet. His high base strength lets him OHKO enemy cavaliers; with his low level, killing unpromoted enemies gets him over 50 experience, and promoted enemies yield even more. Given this, he can reach level 10 after roughly 6 kills.

Zeiss's constitution is his most unique characteristic among the fliers. It allows him to wield heavier lances with impunity, unlike Shanna and Thea, but since he is a male mounted unit, his aid is still high, letting him rescue anyone with 15 or less con (14 after promotion), unlike Melady. This gives him the best of both worlds with the Pegasus Knights' ferrying and his sister's speed lack of speed penalties. Zeiss also has good support options with Melady, as the two can keep up with each other, and their being the same class makes their role similar enough that they'll often be near each other.
Early promotion at level 10 is recommended for Zeiss due to him capping his strength very quickly and needing additional speed and skill to be an effective combat unit. It takes him 6 level-ups on average to get the 2 speed his promotion gives him, so going beyond level 10 does not help with the stats he needs anyway. Due to how late he joins (only 12 chapters left), it is unlikely that he will reach level 20 after promotion before the last few chapters, if at all.

Overall, Zeiss needs a lot of resources and help to get going and even after promotion he's unlikely to be a standout combat or utility unit, especially compared to other fliers such as Melady. However, Zeiss will still has his uses due to canto, flying utility, great physical durability and 8 movement upon promotion. With fliers, and mounted units in general, it's not a stretch to say the more the merrier.
Due to his initial D rank in lances, the most powerful lances he will have access to are rather inaccurate Steel Lances, giving him some significant accuracy issues. Iron Lances are also too weak for this point in the game. An early promotion is useful again, as it gets him to C rank in lances, which lets him wield the accurate and reasonably powerful Killer Lance. He also gains swords through promotion, but only enough sword level to use Iron Swords.

Personality and character
His speed will lag behind most other combat units unless he is given Speedwings. He has enough speed to prevent getting doubled by most enemies, though Nomads or Myrmidons likely will. He is a fine candidate for Speedwings if they have not been used before he joins, as most combat units should have sufficient speed by the time he joins. His average speed after promoting at level 10 without the Speedwings (14 to 15) lets him double slow enemies like Steel Lance-wielding Pegasus Knights and Cavaliers or Steel Axe Fighters. If trained well, Zeiss is one of the great candidates for the legendary Maltet lance, as his potential allows him to fight decently against manaketes with this weapon.

Another of Zeiss's issues is his low resistance making him susceptible to enemy status staves and tomes, even after using a Pure Water. His high HP can help him survive against the latter, but the former will always be a problem for him. His weakness to arrows and ballistae will also be a factor at times; the Delphi Shield is an option, but the player may want to give it to one of the other fliers, as Zeiss tends to be the most physically durable among them.

Zeiss's aid gives him a notable niche among the fliers; his physical durability is on par with Melady while his aid is on par with Thea, meaning he can rescue heavy units like Dieck or Perceval that Melady cannot while having the bulk to be positioned a bit more aggressively than the Pegasus Knights.

Zeiss is a great choice for a support partner for Melady (should the player seek one) as he is her only partner with the same movement as her. It is relatively easy to build due to their similar mobility, but bear in mind that there may be times when the player wants to send them in different directions, as opposed to keeping them together.

Overall, Zeiss takes a bit to get up to speed, and even after promotion, he takes some favoritism to have a shot of having combat remotely comparable to Melady. However, promotion gives him respectable combat alongside great utility and durability with or without favoritism.

Trivia

 • Zeiss's wyvern is named Levrey.[4]
 • Zeiss is one of the few playable characters in the Fire Emblem GBA games to not have custom palette data attached to one of his possible classes, and the only playable unit in a non-exclusive class to have that distinction. He lacks a palette for his unpromoted class and thus uses the otherwise unused generic playable palette of the Wyvern Rider class.
