Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ilios joins as a great prepromoted combat unit that requires no investment thanks to his high base stats. Of a particular note is his very high bulk—with 40 HP (the third highest base in the game), 10 defense, 9 magic, along with innate Miracle and Sol, he is the bulkiest spellcaster in the game. Ilios's base weapon levels are also excellent, with an A-level in swords and thunder magic. While his fire and wind magic levels are only D, he almost never needs to use fire or wind tomes outside of the basic Wind which he has the rank for. On outdoor maps, Ilios has a horse, making him one of the player's most mobile combat units there. Even on indoor maps, he is still a good deployment choice despite having to dismount; his dismount penalties are negligible, except the loss of 3 movement and Canto. He also has an action star, giving him a 5% chance to move again after completing his turn.
Ilios does have some flaws however. His primary combat flaw is his horrible FCM of 0, preventing him from critting an enemy on a follow-up attack; thankfully, he seldom needs to crit to one-round. He has no utility outside of combat outside of being able to capture outdoors. Indoors, his movement is worse than every other promoted unit and on par with the worst of unpromoted units. Perhaps the biggest and most obvious disadvantage that has nothing to do with his performance as a unit is that he is one of the very few rare examples in the Fire Emblem series in which his recruitment eligibility is tied to the status of a specific unit, in his case, Olwen; recruiting Ilios in the first place requires Olwen be either dead or unrecruited (letting her get captured and taken out of the map, or leaving her behind in escape chapters, does not count, since she will still be alive for re-recruitment in Chapter 21x). If you're not comfortable with intentionally killing your units, you can opt to simply not recruit Olwen in Chapter 11x if you desire to recruit Ilios.
Comparison with Olwen
As Ilios and Olwen are mutually exclusive, the player must choose between the two. This comparison is made simpler due to their shared class and growth rates.
Olwen has access to Dire Thunder and the Blessed Sword, neither of which Ilios can wield. While she is available for longer, the only statistical edge she will usually possess when raised to the same level is a higher magic stat. She also has a respectable FCM of 4, as opposed to Illios's FCM of 0.
Ilios will have much better durability than Olwen when he joins while possessing similar offensive capabilities thanks to his high weapon ranks. He also has Miracle and Sol, while Olwen has no skills without manuals.

Endings
Ilios, Aspiring Knight
In the New Kingdom of Thracia, Ilios at last achieved his dream when he was granted a title of nobility. However, the mighty warrior's skills were ill-suited for peacetime, and his government post ended in disaster. He mismanaged his district into ruin, though he was spared from punishment because of his service in the war. Reassigned to a symbolic, do-nothing post, he would often corner his subordinates and force them to listen to the same stories of his bygone glory days.
