Clarine (クラリーネ, Kurarīne) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. She first appears in Chapter 4.

A quite spoiled and snobbish troubadour, Clarine is the daughter of Lord Reglay and the younger sister of the Archery General of Etruria.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Clarine is the second child of Pent and Louise, the counts of Reglay. As most ladies of Etruria, she has lived secluded and surrounded by all kinds of luxuries. However, previous to the games' events, she left the family mansion to visit her brother, Klein, who is the current Archery General of their country and whom she greatly admires.

While searching in Lycia, she is captured by Erik, the marquess of Laus, who claims to be able of reuniting her with Klein. His real motive, though, is to offer her as a gift to Narcian, one of the Dragon Lords of Bern. When presented to Narcian, she mocks him, barely keeping her life thanks to the unexpected invasion of Roy's army. Erik locks her up, so that Narcian can use her later, but Rutoga, a mercenary hired by Erik, sets her free and makes her leave the castle amidst the confusion.

Suddenly, Clarine finds herself in the middle of a battle and decides to join Roy's side to stay out of danger. When Rutoga appears on the battlefield, she rides towards him and angrily berates him for not treating royalty correctly; her remark about fighting against Bern makes him to defect to Roy's side as well. After the battle, she remains in the army for the rest of the war.

Some time after, when the Lycia Alliance Army is fighting bandits in the Western Isles, she finally meets her brother and convinces him to not attack the Alliance Army and to join their cause, confessing how mortifying the Etrurian nobles' behavior towards the islands is.

After Bern is defeated and the war is over, she returns home and carries on with her normal life, gaining the admiration of her peers with her kindness and charm.

Personality and character

Clarine is a self-centered and arrogant girl who is often rude to others, although she does have good intentions. She usually looks down on people due to their social status, and takes great pride in her Etrurian heritage, remarking that Lance is not as good as Etrurian knights are. She also seems to romanticize the concept of gentlemen and knighthood, asking either Lance or Rutoga to take care of her at all costs,[1] and even authorizing the Pheraen cavalier to kiss her hand.[2]

Despite her mean appearance, Clarine does have a kind side, shown in her support conversations with Rutoga and Dorothy. She takes the timid archer under her protection and tries to make her a true lady, helping Dorothy with her self-esteem issues and becoming good friends in the process,[3] while with Rutoga, she recognizes some of her mistakes with her treatment of the swordsman and apologizes to him. While growing up, she heard many stories about Deke, the mercenary who saved Klein's life. She is really happy to have met him at last, as she always considered him an important person.

She greatly admires her older brother, Klein, and strives to become a source of pride for him. Her need for his approval is so big that she is willing to do anything, even to mistreat others. Eventually, he calls her out on it, stating that she is still a child.[4]

Clarine takes great pride in her appearance; despite being in the middle of a war, she suggests Dorothy to wash her hair three times a day.[5] When reminiscing about her childhood with her brother, she mentions how one of her goals was to be the most elegant lady in Etruria. Yet, some time after joining Roy's army, she states that she does not want to go back to the mansion, even though she wants to see her parents.[6] According to her she would have to live a boring life. By then, she has grown up enough to desire a more interesting life than just decorating herself.[7] This shows that she has grown up as not just a snobbish girl but a quite introspective lady.

  1. "Clarine: Wait a minute! You are just going to walk away after abandoning me? I do not think so. A proper gentleman should take responsibility for his actions.
    Rutoga: Responsibility? What responsibility?
Clarine: If a gentleman rescues a lady, he must also escort her to her mansion! I've never heard any story from any barf of a man just abandoning the lady.

  2. "Clarine: Even if you are not my knight... It is true that we are a princess and a knight, am I correct?
Lance: Yes, of course, my lady.
Clarine: T-Then... I shall hereby permit you to kiss my hand.

  3. "Clarine: Listen to me. A fine lady must have confidence in herself. No matter how much you dress up, if you do not have faith in yourself, it will all be in vain. You must not degrade yourself like that. Understood?
    Dorothy: Y-Yes.
Clarine: Have confidence in yourself! It is me who is teaching you. Of course you will become a lady one day!
Dorothy: ...Yes, thank you, Lady Clarine...
Clarine: ...And... We are friends now, are we not?
    Dorothy: Eh?
Clarine: Don't call me 'Lady' Clarine. Just call me Clarine.

  4. " Klein: Clarine!
Clarine: But I wanted to heal your injuries so that you would be proud of me and would say that I was being a great help, and...
Klein: ...But I was proud of you. I was thinking that my naive little sister's so grown up now... But now that you've done this... " — Clarine and Klein's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  5. "Clarine: How do you take care of your hair?
Dorothy: I wash it with water.
Clarine: What!? I can't believe...! Here, use this. You must wash your hair with it three times a day! Understood?
" — Clarine and Dorothy's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  6. "Clarine: I... I don't want to go back to the mansion after the war...
Klein: Why? Father and Mother are anxious for us to return.
Clarine: I want to meet Father and Mother... But...
" — Clarine and Klein's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  7. "Clarine: But if I return to the mansion, I would just be a doll again. I would never see the outside world, and I would only be concerned about decorating myself...
Klein: Well, that is how most Etrurian ladies are.
Clarine: Yes, I know... But becoming the most elegant lady in Etruria does not seem as appealing as it once did.
Klein: That's because you're growing up and maturing, Clarine. If you stay at the mansion, you could just live your life without doing anything. That would be easy, but...
Clarine: But it would be so horribly boring!
