The chapter begins narrating Elibe's history and presenting the different countries on it.
A thousand years ago, there was a great war between humans and dragons called the Scouring. Since then, the continent of Elibe has become dominated by humans, and currently, it is divided into several nations. The two strongest nations are the western Etruria and the eastern Bern, while the less powerful ones are the southern Lycia, the snow-covered northern mountains of Ilia, and the north-eastern plains of Sacae. Recently, King Zephiel of Bern launched an invasion to conquer the entire continent, and he has already conquered Sacae and Ilia, now setting his eyes upon Lycia.

At the beginning, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. However, this harmony was broken a thousand years ago, and both races fought each other to dominate the continent. This conflict, known as The Scouring, was a long and bloody war, but humans could win thanks to the intervention of eight heroes and their weapons, which had arcane powers.

After the conflict ended, humans spread across the continent and developed civilization and technology. The main powers in Elibe are Bern, a highly militarized land, and Etruria, a kingdom characterized by its advanced civilization. Other lesser countries and territories are Sacae, inhabited by various nomadic tribes; Ilia, a barren and cold country whose people depend on mercenary work to survive; Lycia, an alliance of several marches, and Nabata, an inhospitable and mysterious desert area. For more than 900 years, there has been a general sense of balance among the different powers in the continent.

However, after many centuries of peace, the Kingdom of Bern starts an aggresive campaign to conquer all other lands. Having already invaded Sacae and Ilia, Bern's next objective is Lycia.

In view of this threat, Lycia's main march, Ostia, calls the other marches to arms and starts preparing for war. But one of the marquesses, Eliwood of Pherae, has fallen ill and is in no condition to lead his march's army. Therefore, he calls for his son, Roy, who was studying in Ostia under the tutelage of one of Etruria's generals, Lady Cecilia, at the time. He immediately sets back, but Lilina, daughter of the Marquess of Ostia, travels before him to visit Eliwood and pay her respects.

Word of Eliwood's illness has spread; wanting to take advantage of the confusion, a group of bandits approaches Pherae to loot it. Eliwood, sensing the impending danger, sends a knight with a message to Roy, informing him of the oncoming attack. Accompanied only by a small group of retainers and an Ostian knight, he confronts the attackers.

After defeating all bandits, Roy finally returns to his home, where Eliwood and Lilina warmly greet him. Roy asks for his father's health, and after calming his son, Eliwood reminds him of the reason why he has returned home before time: Roy is to lead Pherae's army in Eliwood's stead. To help him, Eliwood has contracted a band of mercenaries, who will join Roy's group at the border with Bern.

Roy departs to the border, followed by his knights and Merlinus, one of his father's most loyal retainers, while Lilina returns to Ostia.

Beginning log
The continent of Elibe. With the Dragons defeated in the Scouring, the unchallenged race of men had flourished and spread civilization throughout the land for the past millennium.

In the west lay the beautiful Kingdom of Etruria, the most developed nation in Elibe with an appreciation for the arts. In the east lay the mighty Kingdom of Bern, a land of military prowess that boasted the continent's strongest army. These were the two largest nations in Elibe, and the smaller powers were scattered between them. Just to west of Bern was the Lycia Alliance, a peaceful land under joint rulership of various marquises. The people of the Knights' Union of Ilia were hard at work cultivating the snowy wastelands in the north. In Sacae lived various tribal clans which rode through the plains on horseback. Despite the occasional clash between nations, there was enough balance of power to ensure peace in Elibe.
In Lycia, Roy of Pherae is called back to his land from Ostia by his father Eliwood, because Eliwood is ill and somebody must lead the territory's defense. Lilina, the daughter of Lord Hector of Ostia, is currently in Pherae on a visit to Eliwood, so Roy takes with him an Ostian knight named Bors, who is responsible for Lilina's safety.

However, no peace can last forever. Under the command of King Zephiel, the Kingdom of Bern suddenly began to dispatch its forces and attack the rest of Elibe. Taken by surprise, Sacae and Ilia were quickly overrun, and those who resisted were mercilessly put to death. It wasn't long before Bern turned its attention to Lycia as well.
When Roy gets back to Pherae, he finds it beset by bandits led by Damas. Eliwood and Lilina had hidden in the castle, and even though Lilina wants to fight the bandits, Eliwood forbids her. He asks Merlinus to send a messenger to Roy, and Merlinus sends Lance, who meets with Roy near the southern village and informs him about the situation. Roy decides to take down the bandits and retake the castle, and so he rushes into battle alongside Marcus, Wolt, Allen and Lance.

In the east of Lycia lay the territory of Pherae. Roy, son of Lord Eliwood, Marquess Pherae, was studying to become the region's next leader in the great Lycian city of Ostia. However, Eliwood, who had fallen ill, sent for Roy to return home. Just a few days earlier, Lilina, the daughter of Eliwood's best friend, Lord Hector of Ostia, had traveled to Pherae to pay her respects to Eliwood. After getting his father's message, Roy hurried home, taking with him his loyal knights and Bors, a knight from Ostia responsible for Lilina's safety. The story begins when Roy had reached an area just on the outskirts of Pherae...
The battle begins, and once Roy defeats the bandits, he meets with Eliwood and Lilina. Eliwood tells him that he is to take over Eliwood's role as acting Marquess of Pherae, because Eliwood is ill and someone needs to lead Pherae's army in the defense of Lycia. Lilina once again offers to help, but Eliwood tells her to go back to Ostia and rule as marchioness in Hector's stead, because Hector is preparing for battle with Bern and Ostia needs a ruler.

On Hard, however, Marcus can use the Iron Sword to cripple enemy axe units and leave them easy pickings for your unpromoted units. Do not be afraid to use Marcus on Hard, as he is the only unit capable of surviving prolonged combat in your group right now.

Breath of Destiny (Japanese: 運命の息吹 Breath of Destiny) is the first chapter in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. In this chapter, the game's main character, Roy, must defend his home march from the attack of a group of bandits. It serves as an introduction to the game's basic mechanics, such as seizing, direct and indirect attack, and movement.

Plot

Main article: Breath of Destiny/Script

A thousand years ago, there was a great war between humans and dragons called the Scouring. Since then, the continent of Elibe has become dominated by humans, and currently, it is divided into several nations. The two strongest nations are the western Etruria and the eastern Bern, while the less powerful ones are the southern Lycia, the snow-covered northern mountains of Ilia, and the north-eastern plains of Sacae. Recently, King Zephiel of Bern launched an invasion to conquer the entire continent, and he has already conquered Sacae and Ilia, now setting his eyes upon Lycia.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

The first chapter in The Binding Blade can prove a challenge if the player is overconfident. In the first playthrough, it is recommended to act slower, or the enemies can swarm a unit and defeat him. Besides, reinforcements in The Binding Blade appear at the beginning of the enemy turn, fresh to attack.

At the beginning, the only units who can attack twice in a turn are Marcus and Lance. On Normal mode, it is recommended to give Marcus's Iron Sword to Roy; the player should reserve Roy's rapier for armored or mounted bosses. Nevertheless, there is no need to train the lord immediately; depending on the playthrough, Roy will have 21 to 27 chapters for training before being promoted, so there is enough time. On Hard, however, Marcus can use the Iron Sword to cripple enemy axe units and leave them easy pickings for your unpromoted units. Do not be afraid to use Marcus on Hard, as he is the only unit capable of surviving prolonged combat in your group right now.

Wolt and Lance can attack the enemies with their iron bow and javelin and make some damage; Alen is the strongest of the unpromoted units, but even he can fall prey to the enemies if they attack him in mass. If any unit receives damage, there are four vulneraries; the player should not hesitate on using them, as almost all characters can resist only three hits.

If the player does not care too much for turn count, they can make a chokepoint near the starting point, between the water and the cliff. This is highly recommended for beginners and players who are not confident on their luck. In the meantime, the village can be visited by a unit who is not fighting. The reward is 5,000 gold, which is extremely useful, as Roy's army begins with no money of their own.

The boss hits hard and has a decent amount of HP; the player should attack him only with swords to ensure they hit. Once the boss is killed, Roy can conquer the castle and end the chapter.
