High Priest (Japanese: ハイプリースト High Priest) is an advanced magical class which was introduced in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is present only in Genealogy, Thracia 776, and Engage, and a counterpart to the role of the Bishop in most other games. The High Priest acts as the promoted class for Priests of both genders in Genealogy and Thracia 776, and Martial Monks in Engage. High Priests wield staves in all three games, but their choice of weapons varies between the games: they wield the three forms of anima magic in Genealogy of the Holy War, light magic in Thracia 776, and tomes or Arts in Engage.
High Priests are competent healers with high magic and exceptional resistance, but are lacking in physical defense. In the SNES games, their offensive capabilities are passable with their high magic, but are crippled by having restricted access to offensive magic with their low weapon levels and, in Thracia 776, very few light magic tomes available for them to use. They are further held back in Genealogy of the Holy War by their movement, tied with that of the General for the lowest of any advanced class, in a game with a strong focus on large maps and high movement. They fare better on offense in Engage, with their base tome level of B being able to wield a good variety of tomes, and their supplemental Art access helping against high-resistance foes. Additionally, both weapon levels can be boosted by innate proficiencies, letting High Priests with Tome proficiency access every normal tome in the game except the S-Rank Nova.
