An Archsage (大賢者, Taikenja, meaning "great sage", or アークセイジ, Aakuseiji) is a wise, powerful master of all types of magic. At first, it was the class of only one character in the series, named Athos. He appears in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade late in the game. Later, though, Arch Sages reappeared in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, as the third tier of the Mage family. Athos wields anima magic, light magic, dark magic, and staves, while Arch Sages in Radiant Dawn wield different magic depending on their original class. Fire, Thunder and Wind Arch Sages can wield all three of those types of magic, as well as staves. However, they can only get an SS ranking in their original type of magic. Dark Arch Sages can wield dark magic, thunder magic, and staves, though they can only get an SS ranking in dark magic.

Athos is only available for one chapter, but he is extremely powerful. He has high stats in all categories, even defense, which makes it safe for him to be in the front of an army. Arch Sages in Radiant Dawn generally have high magic, speed, luck, and resistance, while they suffer in HP and defense.

Archsages in Blazing Sword are separate in class changes from other classes, but it is possible that Athos was originally a normal sage. Athos is already level 20 and cannot gain any more stats; his stats are the same as the base stats, except that he has 25 luck. Although he cannot grow, his stats are still lower than this class's maximum stats. Radiant Dawn Arch Sages all share the same class name, though their stats are slightly different.

Trivia

  • In Blazing Sword, an archsage can be seen as a heroic counterpart to the enemy-only Dark Druid, a class belonging to Nergal, the final boss and Athos's former friend.
