Astral Shards
The Star Shards are a collection of items that appear in Book 2 of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem and its DS remake. The Star Shards are the twelve shattered pieces of the Starsphere, itself one of the original components of the Starlight tome.
Each individual Star Shard has an effect related to the effect of the whole Starsphere in its respective game. In Mystery of the Emblem, each individual Star Shard affects a character's growth rates in certain stats when in their inventory; in New Mystery of the Emblem, each individual Star Shard slightly enhances one or two of a character's stats when in their inventory.
All twelve Star Shards must be collected in order to assemble the Starsphere. If even one Star Shard is lost, the Starsphere cannot be assembled in chapter 14. As the Starsphere is necessary to obtain the Shield of Seals, losing a single Star Shard will eventually guarantee the player the game's bad ending.

Trivia
- The names of all twelve Star Shards collectively refer to the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac, the name of each individial Star Shard being the Latin-origin name of one of the signs.
