The future is not written.
— One of Lucina's victory quotes.

Lucina is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and is available without DLC. A semi-clone of Marth, Lucina retains the same moveset but notably lacks a sweetspot or sourspot on her attacks. She is a very fast character, boasting the fastest walking speed in the game, alongside above average gravity and falling speed. Unlike Marth, she has constant kill pressure due to her not needing precise spacing to hit hard with her attacks. Lucina is ranked 14th on the tier list, in the B tier. Director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed in his column in Famitsu that Lucina was originally planned simply as an alternative costume for Marth, but as development progressed, her attributes were altered to diverge from Marth's, leading to Sakurai's decision to turn her into her own separate character.[1]

Special moves

  • Shield Breaker (Japanese: シールドブレイカー): Lucina's standard special move. When the special button is pressed, Lucina readies Parallel Falchion. When the move is fully charged or the special button is released, Lucina will thrust forward, dealing massive damage to shields.
  • Dancing Blade (Japanese: マーベラスコンビネーション): Lucina's side special move. Lucina slashes in front of herself four times, each slash can be angled and has different hitboxes.
  • Dolphin Slash (Japanese: ドルフィンスラッシュ): Lucina's up special move. Lucina leaps upward and swings Parallel Falchion in a slightly curved motion. This move provides lots of vertical distance, but leaves Lucina vulnerable as she falls to the ground.
  • Counter (Japanese: カウンター): Lucina's down special move. Lucina braces herself, waiting for an opponent to attack. If they do, she will slash in an upward arc, dealing increased damage back.
  • Critical Hit (Japanese: 必殺の一撃): Lucina's Final Smash. Lucina rushes forwards in a straight line, dealing massive damage and knockback to any enemies hit. The critical hit soundbite from the GBA Fire Emblem games will play.

Trophies

Lucina

When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but more than just the tip of her sword is powerful.
PAL: Daughter of Chrom and future Princess of Ylisse. When she comes from the future to prevent a terrible future from unfolding, she goes by the name of Marth, but only until her true identity comes to light. She is a very similar fighter to Marth, except it doesn't actually matter which part of her sword she strikes with.

With Marth, you need to try to hit with the tip of his sword, but Lucina's sword is equally powerful all along the blade. Her Shield Breaker move lets her attack opponents and break their shields at the same time. Charge it fully to shatter shields in one hit.

Palutena's Guidance

Pit: That lady's moves are awfully similar to Marth's.
Palutena: That's Lucina. She used to introduce herself as Marth, so certain similarities seem inevitable.
Pit: What? She stole someone else's identity?
Viridi: Well, it wasn't quite like that.
Palutena: Marth had become a legend by her time—the Hero King. So Lucina took that name to bolster the morale of her own army. Think of it as a symbol of hope in the depths of despair.
Pit: That's pretty deep.
Viridi: You can't tell by looking at her, but I hear she's got a great sense of humor.
Pit: I'll try cracking a few jokes and see if that softens her up.
Palutena: The tip of her blade doesn't deal as much damage as Marth's. But her attacks are more balanced, even if they're not tremendously powerful.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

SSBU Lucina.png

Lucina returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. During the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate, Lucina received a mixture of buffs and nerfs, mainly her KO potential and grabbing. However, she received compensation buffs to her damage and side special. Overall, Lucina still plays the same as she did in Smash 4, playing mainly for an oppresive neutral game and racking up damage before applying kill pressure.

In the World of Light, Lucina is vaporized alongside everybody else except Kirby. After Galeem is defeated, she falls under the control of Dharkon and can be fought and rescued in Dharkon's realm.

The Palutena’s Guidance conversation about Lucina is reused from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but as with all characters that were not playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Lucina does not have a Codec Conversation about her.
