Potential new format for family trees
A possible new way to format family trees. Example from Chalphy#Genealogy; based off Wikipedia: Family tree of the British royal family
Genealogy of House Chalphy
|
|
An unbroken line indicates a direct relationship; a dashed line indicates descent over generations. Important relatives from outside the Chalphy family are marked in gray.
|
Didn't include italics because I think it is clear enough who is and is not descended from Baldr without them; didn't include double lines because I think they are similarly unnecessary. I did include unspecified spouses to be consistent about how descendants are delineated. I left a question mark on Sesar's son, as I don't think it's specified that Oifey inherited his Baldr blood from his father. I think that everything in gray could be removed and it wouldn't have a significant effect on the tree; Deirdre's extended family adds some context for Seliph and Sigurd, but it doesn't really matter to Baldr or Chalphy as a whole.
This format uses cell borders to connect family members, rather than mimic lines with ASCII characters in cells; this prevents any misalignment and allows it to look better in smaller spaces. However, it's still a table with a lot of empty cells, and it requires a good number of width
s to prevent the vertical borders from collapsing to one side. Making the trees into SVG files should be simple, as it's just text and basic shapes and colors, and it may be the best way to display them as it won't have any down-scaling weirdness.
To prevent the bottom text from expanding the size of the table, I set the cell to have max-width: 0
, which lets the rest of the table grow as normal and forces the text to wrap to it; this feels wrong and like it won't work on some platforms, but I couldn't find a way to make text wrap for non-fixed widths.
