Wikipedia features a more in-depth article.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (Japanese: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. リンカーンVSエイリアン Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Lincoln VS. Aliens) is a turn-based strategy game released in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS hand-held console. It was developed by Intelligent Systems, the principal developers of the Fire Emblem series, but unlike it and its sister series Wars, the game is controlled from the third-person perspective of the playable units and plays not unlike a third-person shooter, with the player using each unit's personaly supply of steam power to either move the unit or have them attack the enemy aliens. The third-person perspective prevents the player from having an overhead view of everything happening on the map like in Fire Emblem, instead forcing the player to strategize based only on what their units see happening around them.

The game is set in the year 1865, in an alternate, steampunk-themed reality where the technology of the steam engine has led to a technological revolution and become a staple of life. When an alien species begins an assault on Earth, the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, commands a covert strike force known as S.T.E.A.M. to repel the aliens and defend Earth. The player controls agents of S.T.E.A.M., which is made up of a mix of real people and characters from North American literature, with the chief protagonist being Henry Fleming. Through the use of amiibo, characters from Fire Emblem can also be commanded.

Gameplay

Navigating the map during the player's turn. John Henry is the current active character and is readying his Bear Grenade weapon to bomb an alien, while Marth and Lion wait behind him.

The game is divided into chapters, which are themselves divided into multiple maps, and in each map the player commands an army of up to four characters and navigates them across the battlefield to defeat the aliens and reach the goal zone at the map's end. Secondary goals include collecting medals and gears scattered around the maps, which when enough are collected will unlock new sub-weapons and boilers for the player's characters to use as the game progresses.

The ability to perform actions revolves around a character's personal supply of steam power. Every character starts a map with a supply of steam and expends it to perform actions, with moving one tile costing one unit of steam while attacking involves multiple units, depending on the weapon used. Characters are capable of attacking as many times per turn as they want, as long as they can afford the steam cost, but the farther they move, the fewer times they will be allowed to attack. The steam supply can be replenished by picking up steam canisters or stopping at checkpoints as the character moves around. Characters are allowed to end their turn without using all of their steam, and if they have enough steam remaining to allow a weapon use, they can perform overwatch attacks, or counter-attacks, during enemy phase if an enemy wanders into their sight.

All characters are assigned three pieces of equipment: a main weapon, a sub-weapon, and a boiler. A unit's main weapon is their primary personal weapon which nobody else can use, while the sub-weapon is one of many which the player can assign to units as they please; in battle, these are toggled between at the flick of a switch on the console's touch screen. Boilers are back-worn devices which are the source of a unit's steam power, and each offers a different maximum steam capacity, rate of steam replenisment per turn, and boosts to offense, defense or mobility. Characters also possess two innate skills: a regular ability which is in effect at all times, and a powerful one-off special which can only be used once per map.

Playable characters

In addition to the thirteen regular playable characters, four Fire Emblem characters can be used by connecting the game with their respective amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U amiibo series. The Fire Emblem characters operate by slightly different rules compared to the regular characters: they are unable to equip any boilers or sub-weapons other than the ones they come with, and if they are defeated, they cannot be revived at checkpoints and must be re-summoned after the battle by using their amiibo again.

Marth

Main article: Marth

As in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Marth appears in this game in his Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem design. In the Japanese version, he is once again voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa; Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. also marks the first time that Marth has had an English voice actor since the Fire Emblem OVA's dub in 1997, his English actor here being Yuri Lowenthal. Marth's two weapons are Falchion and a Rapier, both of which are close-range weapons.

Marth's stats are as follows:

Milton on Marth: Marth seems to have stepped directly from the pages of one of the Grimm brothers' household tales. While out of place in our modern world, his regalia is undeniably stylish. If only there were a place where similarly clothed people could convene and play in such costumes...

Ike

Main article: Ike

As in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Ike appears in this game in his Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Hero attire, and is once again voiced by Michihiko Hagi and Jason Adkins in Japanese and English respectively. His two weapons are Ragnell and Urvan, the former allowing him to attack enemies over an impressive distance by throwing shockwaves, and the latter dealing heavy damage to multiple enemies and objects in close proximity to him.

Ike's stats are as follows:

Milton on Ike: While Ike is not of high birth, he is noble in his character. His talents are those of a professional soldier, yet he is never eager to raise his blade. When asked, he simply replies that war has cost him dearly, and he hopes by his efforts to keep others from losing what he has lost.

Robin's strategic acumen is matched only by a (unique?) ability to use a book to conjure fire and lightning. We are blessed to have such a soldier.
Milton on Robin: Even among all the extraordinary members of S.T.E.A.M., having an actual sorcerer aboard feels uncanny and off-putting. Intriguingly, Robin firmly rejects this title, saying something about the wrong "class". Somehow I don't think we're using the word in the same way...
