Echidna joins as a pre-promoted Hero in Chapter 11A. She appears from upper yellow house on the east side of the map on turn 8, along with three Fighters. On Hard Mode, she will die if each of the Fighters hits her, which there is a 5–11% chance of; on Normal Mode, there is at most a 6% chance that she will die, and it is possible the Fighters will not have the strength to kill her at all.

Echidna has high bases in strength, speed and skill, but low ones in luck, defense, resistance, and constitution; she also has low growths in every stat besides HP, ensuring that her stats will not improve much. She comes equipped with a Steel Axe which lowers her attack speed by 6 due to its high weight and Echidna's low constitution. Echidna's weapon levels are fairly high, allowing her to wield powerful weapons such as Killer Axes, Killing Edges, and Wyrmslayers at base; this, along with her high strength and speed, allows her to be a potent combat unit in her joining chapter and many of the following chapters, but her low defense and somewhat low HP means that fighting large groups of enemies is quite risky for her. Because of her low growths and low bulk, she will struggle to double and one-round many of the enemies in the late-game without a crit; even so she can still contribute decent chip damage. Echidna's high base weapon levels allow her to use Durandal or Armads relatively early, but these weapons should not be used much before Chapter 23 if the player desires to get the true ending.
Echidna has high bases in speed and skill, and the rest of her bases are decent for her join time. Unfortunately, she has low growths in every stat besides HP, ensuring that her stats will quickly fall off, especially in her questionable defensive parameters. Echidna's weapon levels are fairly high, allowing her to wield powerful weapons such as Killer Axes, Killing Edges, and Wyrmslayers at base; this, along with her high strength and speed, allows her to be a potent combat unit in her joining chapter and many of the following chapters, but she is held back by her long-term durability. Echidna's high base weapon levels allow her to use Durandal or Armads relatively early, but other units will surpass her in the long term. If the player does wish to use her long-term, she will want a Body Ring to allow her to use heavier axes better, and few units will compete with her for it.

Comparison to Bartre
Comparison to Bartre
Depending on the route taken after Chapter 9, one of either Echidna or Bartre may be recruited; Echidna is recruited in the north route, which is played if neither of the northernmost villages is visited or if the left one is. Bartre has higher HP, luck, defense,  strength, and constitution. Barte's high constitution allows him to use heavier weapons without losing much speed while still being light enough to be rescued by units like Shanna, and his access to bows allows him to deal high damage to enemy fliers. In contrast, though Echidna's lower constitution will cause her to be weighed down more frequently and more severely, she is easier to rescue and her attack speed will be better than Bartre's at base with the same weapon; furthermore, he high speed and skill and access to swords allow her to double and hit enemies consistently, and the ability to use powerful swords such as Killing Edges makes her a better boss-killer and makes her overall combat more consistent.

Bartre has higher HP, luck, defense,  and strength. While Barte has higher constitution, Echidna is consistently faster than Bartre. Echidna also has access to swords while Bartre has access to bows, both of which have their own advantages. Echidna has better overall combat and flexibility, while Bartre is better against enemy fliers and can take more punishment from enemies. Both are going to be good units for the mid-game, and both will fall off later, though Echidna is generally the better unit.
