One day, the Berling Mercenaries are wiped out by Byleth. Shez is rescued from death and granted great power by a mysterious being named Arval, and swears revenge. Six months later, they chance upon the nobles Edelgard von Hresvelg, Dimitri Alexander Blaiddyd, and Claude von Riegan being pursued by bandits and help the group. Afterwards, Shez is taken to the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery and enrolls there as a student with the house of their choice—the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer. Afterwards, they rescue Monica von Ochs from the surviving bandits and an unidentified faction. Monica names the librarian Tomas as her abductor, and Tomas displays similar powers to the ones granted to Shez by Arval before fleeing arrest. Afterwards, Edelgard launches a coup to overthrow her corrupt uncle Lord Arundel, who is in league with Tomas, Dimitri sets out to suppress an insurrection by his uncle and regent Rufus, and Claude defends Fódlan's Locket from Almyran invaders led by Prince Shahid. Shez accompanies whichever house they chose, and afterwards remains in their chosen lord's service for the next two years.
