Anime

Super Smash Bros.

Marth first appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as an unlockable character. Since Fire Emblem was a popular series in Japan, he was included along with Roy of Fire Emblem 6. However, no Fire Emblem games had been localized anywhere in the world. Therefore, Marth and Roy's name translations were the first official Fire Emblem translations. Their voices and sound effects were left in Japanese for world releases. Due to the popularity of the two characters in the game, Nintendo decided to release the Fire Emblem series in the rest of the world, starting with Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword, released as just "Fire Emblem" in America. Neither character actually appeared (except for a cameo by Roy in Blazing Word, as it is the prequel to Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals, the game in which Roy appears) until Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, the DS remake of the original Fire Emblem, was released.

Marth reappears in the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, again as an unlockable character. In the Subspace Emissary, Brawl's story mode, Marth is found in his kingdom, which is being attacked by many enemies. He later teams up with Meta Knight and Ike to stop the Subspace army. He is turned into a trophy among with many other characters, but is freed by Ness, Luigi, Kirby, and King Dedede, and can be chosen to fight Tabuu if his trophy is saved.

Etymology

Marth's original name is Japanese is マルス, romanized Marusu, but has been translated both as "Marth" and as "Mars". His name was localized as "Mars" in the English dub of his OVA. While Melee appears to refer to him as "Marth", the debug menu, which is a menu used by the programmers to work features out, refers to him as "Mars". "Marth" was most likely popularized by Melee, and it is the most used today.

Mars was the Roman god of war, also known as Ares in Greek mythology. The name "Marth" is most likely derived from Mars.

Trivia

  • Marth took almost nineteen years to appear in a game outside of Japan, besides the Super Smash Bros. games and a two-episode anime based on Fire Emblem: Monsho no Nazo. The original game for the Famicom was released in March 1990, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon was released in Europe in December 2008 and in North America and Australia in February 2009.
