Saber is a [[Mercenary]] who joins [[Celica]]'s army in early Act 2. He has solid base stats which allow him to contribute from the moment he joins, and he can promote to [[Myrmidon]] very quickly. Despite starting at level 1, the Myrmidon promotion only requires level 7, which is one of the lowest requirements in the game. Once promoted, Saber's stats will improve further and he will eventually become one of the best combat units in the army.

Saber has better defensive stats than the other units in Celica's army when he joins—he has equal defense to Celica and Boey and equal HP to Boey, but does not consume HP when he attacks. His base speed is also high enough to avoid getting doubled by many enemies even on higher difficulties, which helps make him the best unit available to take attacks from enemy [[Pirate]]s.

As a [[Myrmidon]], Saber will be able to promote to [[Dread Fighter]] at level 10 as his third-tier promotion, which is among the best classes in ''Shadows of Valentia''. Not only does it have a relatively low level requirement and high strength and speed bases, it has [[Resistance +5]] and [[Apotrope]]—the latter of which halves damage taken from black magic—which is useful against the many dangerous enemy black magic users, such as [[Witch]]es, [[Arcanist]]s, and [[Cantor]]s. Dread Fighter also has equal movement to [[Cavalier]]s, but has lower movement costs for [[terrain]] than mounted units, potentially moving faster than them on the swamps in Celica's portion of [[Land of Sorrow (Gaiden)|Act 4]].

As a Dread Fighter, Saber can promote to Villager at level 10, allowing him to adopt a new class line or simply level up repeatedly through this promotion. This is not necessary for the main game, as the stats of enemies are not high enough to warrant sacrificing high movement and resistance for additional level-ups; however, it may be useful for [[Act 6/Thabes Labyrinth|Thabes Labyrinth]], which has much stronger enemies than [[Together to the End/Duma Temple|Duma Temple]]. Alternately, Saber can be made to promote from Villager to [[Archer]], sacrificing the high resistance of Dread Fighter for access to the [[Killer Bow]], and thus [[Hunter's Volley]].
