Dark Emblem (Japanese: 闇の紋章士 Dark emblem person) is the seventh chapter of Fire Emblem Engage. In this chapter, Alear's journey to Brodia is halted by Hortensia—a princess of Elusia—and her own Emblem.
This chapter introduces Dark Emblems; enemy-exclusive variants of Emblems that cannot enter the engaged state, but grant their users access to their engage skills, attacks, and weapons even when only synced together. It also introduces smash weapons, which knock opponents backwards.
Plot
- Main article: Dark Emblem/Script
Alear and Alfred cross the border into Brodia, when an arrow flies just past the former. Its shooter demands them to identify themselves, which Alear and Alfred oblige. Upon hearing this information, the archer jumps forward into a prostrating stance and apologizes profusely to them. Alfred recognizes the man as Alcryst, the younger prince of Brodia; he then introduces his retainers, Citrinne and Lapis, and explains that he was ordered to meet Alear and Alcryst at the border by his father, King Morion. On the way to the border, he and his retainers had only seen Corrupted and bandits, and had assumed Alear's group was among them. The retainers challenge their group to prove their worthiness further, but Alcryst rebukes the two, elaborating on Brodia's heavy valuation of strength.
Alcryst then takes the group to the Grand Crossing, intending to lead them to the castle. On the way there, he explains that his country has held the Ring of the Young Lion, which is currently in possession of Alcryst's older brother, Diamant. The group reaches the Grand Crossing, where they find Elusian soldiers led by Princess Hortensia waiting for them. Hortensia chastises Alcryst and Brodia, criticizing them for invading her country and harming her citizens. She then reveals that she has come by order of her father, King Hyacinth, to take the rings from Alear. Alear refuses, and Hortensia mutters under her breath that her older sister is busy attacking Brodia's castle. She then orders the soldiers to march forward, and a full-scale battle between the two forces erupts.
Midway through the battle, Hortensia taunts Alear with an Emblem Ring of her own. Alear is confused by her ability to summon the Emblem, and she explains that the ring was empowered by Sombron. She refers to it as the Ring of the Princess Exalt, which Alear recognizes as one of the rings that Lumera was guarding. Despite her newfound power, Alear manages to defeat her forces, and she orders her army to retreat. Afterwards, Vander deduces that Elusia possesses five rings, including the Ring of the Lady of the Plains. The group then prepares to leave for Brodia Castle. Meanwhile, Veyle fights off Corrupted within the village at the border, and reminisces about her lost sibling.
Beginning log
The party attempts to cross the border to obtain the ring entrusted to the Kingdom of Brodia.

Your new recruits are Alcryst, a bowman with a little less Strength but far more Speed than Etie who can one-shot fliers other than Hortensia and Rosado on this map with his Steel Bow; Lapis, another swift swordswoman with your first smash weapon, and Citrinne, another solid Mage packing your first 1-3 range Thunder tome. At the start of the battle, the southwestern Sword Flier is just begging to be shot by Alcryst. Oblige her, have your mages rip up the northwest Lance Armor, and have everyone else tear up the Lance Fighter. Feel free to try out Lapis' Iron Blade on the Lance Fighter to see how smash weapons work and how they can benefit you in battle. Send some axe-wielders north to intercept the incoming Lance Fighters and some mage killers south to deal with the Mages. On turn 2, the next wave consisting of two Axe Cavaliers, two Sword Fliers, and an Archer will aggro. You can use the collapsed part of the bridge to engage the Archer at 2 range without facing the cavalry. Once this wave is dead, you have a moment to rest and collect yourself.
When you pull the two Sword Armors, two each of Archers, Sword Fliers, and Axe Cavaliers will aggro with them. Citrinne has enough power at base to one-round a Sword Armor with Fire and Divinely Inspiring support. If you have another good magic-user who can one-round the other Sword Armor with Surge, so much the better. Have your bowmen take up intercept positions on the north and south ends so they can dispose of the fliers. Once the group comes down on you, overwhelm the Axe Cavaliers with Alear and Lapis, then kill the Archers on the following turn. Note that Hortensia and her cronies won't aggro until Hortensia can attack from 1 range, so you can play around that to keep your backline protected.
Hortensia is the first boss in the game to have a Dark Sync with an Emblem. This means that their Engage meter never runs out and they will use Engage attacks with impunity. When you're ready to rock, place Louis on one of the Protection Tiles and have Alear face Rosado. Fortunately, Louis' ridiculous bulk means he should be able to shrug off Hortensia's All for One. From there, finish Rosado off with Warp Ragnarok, use Lodestar Rush to rip through one of Hortensia's health bars, and overwhelm the rest of the enemies before they can get another turn in.
