Xane (Japanese: チェイニー Cheine) is an Archanean Manakete and the only character in the Fire Emblem series of the Freelancer class. Initially, he claims to be from a far away land, and that all of his kin can transform as he does, though no other Manakete is shown to have his ability to transform into other people, though it may have something to do with him discarding his dragonstone.
Role
Xane is met in Chapter 16, where he is being held captive by the Dolhr army for his ability to shape shift with the intention of forcing him into service. If spoken to with Marth, he will instead join the Altean army, serving through the remainder of the War of Shadows.[2]

Xane's class—Freelancer—allows him to copy the class and stats of another unit, though not their inventory. Xane is more or less as good as whatever unit you choose to imitate. Ultimately, you can't go wrong with a second version of one of your best units, which makes Xane an excellent unit who is always useful. There is, however, a necessary caveat to his usefulness in faster clears: because transforming takes a turn, Xane will be unable to contribute to much on turn 1; as such, Xane may be incredibly useful for two-turn clears, but will be inferior to a unit slightly less strong than your best or an additional Curate or Bishop capable of using Warp for one-turns.

Book 2
Role
Xane waiting for Marth in Mamorthod, the desert of death.
Xane appeared to Marth in the desert of Mamorthod after Marth traversed it on orders from Gotoh to come to Thabes Tower. He initially disguised himself in the guise of Tiki, and pretended to confess his love for Marth. Marth was shocked by this, but Xane revealed himself. He revealed he was ordered by Gotoh as Marth's guide. First he escorted Marth's army through the Fire Dragons' valley, explaining the history of the dragons, earth dragons, and Falchion to him. He also revealed that he, Gotoh, and Tiki are divine dragons. He next escorted Marth through the land of the ice dragons, and explained more of the history of the Manaketes and divine dragons. He also revealed that he disliked humans, although he did take a liking to Marth. After Marth's forces made it though the frozen land he informed Marth about the Shield of Seals and the five orbs, and discussed the location of all the orbs. After this he fought with Marth's forces for the rest of the war.

Role
Xane appears in Chapter 16 as an enemy unit, though he is not aggressive. He was captured by Dolhr and forced to work in their service, though he states he had no intention to waste his talents on such a country.[3] After he is freed from his cell and Marth speaks to him, Xane accompanies Marth for the rest of the war.

Analysis

Xane joins in Chapter 16 of Shadow Dragon as a level 1 Freelancer. As a Freelancer, Xane can transform into any of the player's units; transforming copies all the unit's stats except for their current HP—Xane's max HP increases, but he stays at his earlier HP—but uses a turn. Xane's level and stats are functionally irrelevant, as he will spend entire battles using another unit's stats.
Xane requires a turn to transform, and because of that, he cannot use his copied stats until turn 2 at earliest; as such, Xane cannot contribute to clearing a map in one turn. However, Xane can contribute on slower playthroughs; a copy of the strongest unit will generally be more useful than the eighth- or ninth-strongest unit.

Trivia
- Xane's Manakete heritage may have been the impetus for Shadow Dragon's PAL region localization team to localize the name of his class as "Chameleon".
- In TearRing Saga: Yutona Heroes War Chronicles, there is a character named Narsus who is very similar to Xane, with both of them having the ability to transform into other units.
