“ | You're here. At last. Now, once and for all. | ” | — Xander |

Xander (Japanese: 暗夜王子マークス Dark Night Prince Marks) is twenty-sixth chapter of the Birthright campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Corrin comes ever closer to confronting Garon, but is instead confronted by Xander, the only person left guarding Garon, and is challenged to a one-on-one duel, but a sudden event causes their duel to take a tragic turn.

Xander (chapter)/Script
Xander calls on his retainers, Laslow and Peri, and commands them to stay back from fighting Corrin; he states that a duel is the best way to limit any further casualties. Laslow doesn't trust the Hoshidans to honor their duel, while Peri still wishes to sate her bloodlust; this prompts Xander to command them once more to stay back. He states that he does trust them, but that this is the best way for them to help him, though the retainers still have their reservations. Meanwhile, Elise leads Corrin further into the castle to reach Garon. Corrin suggests that they rest for a brief moment, but he/she is immediately confronted by Xander himself. Corrin expresses regret at having to face him this way, to which Xander replies that he/she is still as naive as ever and refuses to let Corrin kill Garon, and challenges him/her to a one-on-one duel. Elise tries to intervene, but Xander takes her action as her abandoning Nohr. When Elise tells him she wants her family back, he refuses to listen as he is Nohr's crown prince and must kill Corrin for the sake of Nohr, retorting that nothing she says can make him defect. Ryoma calls for the group to not intervene, with Xander promising that nothing will get in the way of the duel. Corrin accepts his duel, and Xander leads him/her into the great hall, commanding Elise once more to stay out of the way. Elise begins to cry for failing to talk Xander out of fighting, but Corrin attempts to comfort her and leaves to duel with Xander. Elise, unwilling to lose her family, decides to disobey Xander.
In the great hall, Xander warns Corrin that their duel will not be like their previous mock battles, though Corrin assures him that he/she is not the same person he/she once was. Xander begins to attack, and Corrin fails to land a single blow. Corrin remembers Leo's warning from before, but refuses to back down and lands a strike. Xander knocks Corrin down to his/her feet with one more blow. Ryoma and Azura watch in horror, but Corrin urges them to leave, as Xander completely dominates the fight. Corrin asks Xander to use his immense power for justice by overthrowing Garon with him/her, but Xander scoffs that justice does not exist in war, and begins to attack him/her once more. Corrin still holds by his/her view of justice. Still refusing to listen, Xander attempts to finish off Corrin with a killing blow, but suddenly, Elise jumps in front of them and takes the attack for Corrin. Seized with shock and grief, Xander rushes to cradle his sister in his arms, whereupon she, in her last breath, pleads with him to end the war not just through his strength, but also his own kindness and love. Elise then dies in his arms.
Corrin grieves over her death, but Xander steps up and calls on him/her to finish their duel. Corrin is enraged at his seeming callousness, but Xander responds that Elise's death will make this their last fight. Corrin pleads Xander not to fight, but he continues to provoke him/her, so he/she finally obliges, challenging him once and for all. Before they can begin the duel again, Peri and Laslow arrive, and Xander questions why they are here, they tell him they had a bad feeling he would be double crossed and when they question him who killed Elise, Xander doesn't answer and commands them once more to not intervene, but they refuse and disobeys him by bringing in Nohrian troops at their commands, disrupting the duel and Ryoma calls them cowards in response and prepares for battle. Xander becomes angered with his retainers' intervention, saying he didn't want it to go that way. With the fight no longer a duel, the Hoshidans fight back against the Nohrians and Corrin begins his/her last battle with Xander.
Corrin defeats Xander, who compliments him/her on becoming the leader he wanted him/her to be. Corrin, however, still believed himself/herself to be no match for Xander, and demands him to answer why he let him/her win. Corrin begins to cry, and Xander reminisces on his favorite memories—when he and the rest of their siblings laughed together. This causes Corrin to ask why Xander didn't listen to him/her or Elise, when they wanted him to stand down and that no one had to die. Xander tells Corrin not to reflect on "what ifs" and remarks that Corrin had chosen his/her path, while Xander had no choice as the crown prince, and did truly intend to kill him/her for Nohr's sake. Corrin, still frustrated by his decision, calls on Xander not to leave him. After lamenting over the possibility of fighting alongside Corrin in an alternate world, Xander simply tells him/her to bring peace to the world as he could not. Before passing on forever, Xander says that Garon is no longer the person he used to be, and Corrin promises to stop him for both of their sakes.
Corrin grieves over Xander's death, but states that he/she must keep going to honor his and Elise's sacrifices. Before moving forward once and for all, Corrin thanks them both for all that they've done for him/her, and promises to them that he/she will end the war for good.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
Before the chapter begins, it is worth noting that Corrin cannot start the chapter paired up in order to have a proper duel with Xander (not that they need it). Due to Xander's poor stats and his proximity to your army's starting position, it is very easy to complete this chapter in a single turn regardless of difficulty. In particular, his low speed and resistance mean that magic attacks make quick work of him, even in spite of Aegis. Some particularly effective means of defeating him include the Bolt Naginata, the Beast Killer, and, like with nearly all else, Ryoma. Xander's chamber can easily be entered as there is only ever a single General blocking the way; it is merely a matter of killing him and then opening the door through use of Locktouch to reach Xander. Unlike in Conquest’s Counterpart to this chapter, where his doors can only be opened after defeating his retainers. Mounted units and Azura can be helpful in bringing your main fighters to Xander if they cannot reach him otherwise.
Trivia
- This chapter is one of few chapters in the game where the preparations theme doesn't play during that phase of setup. In this case, the music from the preceding cutscene continues onto the battle preparations screen.
- This is also the only chapter outside final missions to not use the proper preparation theme.
- Despite his level increasing, Xander's strength and defense have decreased from his previous appearance in Birthright, possibly to highlight him not fighting at his fullest.
- Xander additionally has less HP on Hard mode than on Normal or Lunatic mode.
- This chapter's map is later recycled into the DLC chapter I: In Endless Dreams, in the Heirs of Fate saga.
